I've never understood how, but Soul Reaver somehow managed to make all of this not be the most incredibly purple prose. Crystal Dynamics do a really good job on "let's fight but first we're going to cross our arms and be dramatic at each other for 5 minutes." It's probably the voice actors being really good.
