You can hear him casting about for a musical direction on their debut album On Parole – recorded in 1975 but not released until their former record label attempted to cash in on their early 80s fame – trying out a variety of back-to-basics styles, including tough pub rock and stuff that, if you didn’t know it was Motörhead, you might take for a lost 1977 punk band. The sound that stuck was a track on their eponymous theme song, previously a Hawkwind B-side. Hard, fast and brutally effective, it was shot through with both a dry wit – the experience of taking amphetamine is “going up like prices at Christmas” – and grim realism, enthusiastically advocating drugs not as a tool to expand your mind, but as “mental anaesthesia”. Initially greeted with such diffidence and bafflement that Motörhead considered splitting up, it proved both timely and prescient, as powerful a reflection of mid-70s Britain as Anarchy in the UK or White Riot. Lemmy accomplished what Mick and Keith haven't: He aged but didn't lose his edge. And yet, at the same time, never felt the need to poo poo on his younger peers (in many cases, embraced them) like Richards frequently does, and unlike Jagger, kept writing cool songs.

My friend (a super cute, 5'2", 98lb blonde) was Lemmy for Halloween this year. It was great to see all the other girls, dressed in their "sexy" nurse/teacher/whatever costumes scowling at her. To make it even better, we saw Gwar play that night, so we were covered in fake blood by the time we hit the bars. It made me sad how many people had no clue who she was supposed to be, but the ones who got it loving loved it.

Their set at Wacken Open Air in '06 is a pretty good show, great sound quality for a live set. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk886pOS4Mo At least skip up to 1:08:00 for a crushing run through of Overkill. I saw Motörhead when I was like 14 or 15. It was a ticketed thing but they didn't sell many tickets so they just made it GA. So they were playing in the daytime to 3 or 400 people in a little pit of a shed that holds like 12,000, and they were loving pros about it. Put on a great show, the loudest thing I had heard or have since, like make you sick to your stomach loud, just loving cool. Dude's a legend.

I hope he gets buried in LA. I have no desire to go back to that loving city but if he's there with a headstone, a picture of me there would be worth the trip. I'm sad I'll never get to shout "AND WE PLAY ROCK AND ROLL" when they came on stage, again.

Saw a great local band play a Motörhead mini-set last night. Tried to see Motörhead twice and they cancelled both shows. Still, they were the loving best. RIP Lemmy.

Been away from the internet and more importantly my speakers over New Years. I got into Motorhead kinda late. Caught them in November '14, didn't register that Lemmy was ill - just that he was old. The motherfucker pretty much didn't move all show. I was still looking forward to catching him in January. Made plans with a few friends, was gonna get the tickets when I got back from my trip... Anyone know if there's footage or a recording of it anywhere?
