Season 7 had its ups and downs but as a general rule ignore any ridiculous black and white TVIV poster "x thing i didn't think was perfect in every way doesn't exist don't watch it" and decide for yourself.

I have no issue with Whedon writing the plot lines, but his dialogue work is atrocious.

Depends what sort of dialogue, obviously the light hearted quippy stuff is his strength but anything meant to have some emotional weight to it often doesn't work. Like when Fred was taken by Illyria on Angel and Angel says to his team to motivate them to save her: "remember guys... Winifred Burkle." Just comes off as cheesy so it does not have the desired effect.

The best way I've found to express my issues with Whedon is that he only creates women he wants to have sex with. Every woman character exists to be desirable - they can also have agency and plot significance, which is good, but only if they're also objects of fantasy. Dollhouse takes this to an extreme, but it's present in everything he does.

There's a reason Black Widow starts Avengers 1 tied to a chair.

So women on TV are attractive, huh.

Unfortunately, at least when I stopped watching it, it was pretty bland and boring, its only saving grace was pretty much just the beautiful shots of the Hawaii landscape. Although it occasionally went on some weird poo poo where for some reason this group of police officers in Hawaii regularly went on international black ops to hunt down people in North Korea and the middle east, and this was in no way considered strange or unusual.

I wish I could remember the episode that ended with the team sitting together in H50 HQ watching some live footage of a night raid of some terrorist compound while they grinned at each other in dramatic slow motion. It would have been perfect if they played America gently caress Yeah over it.

Well the trips to North Korea, afghanistan etc were indeed considered a bit unusual since it was all unsanctioned and unofficial and they had no support etc. Overall I find it more entertaining than most procedurals and it's certainly a cut above NCIS: whatever. And occasionally there is crazy stuff like a remote control drone terrorizing the island or a nuke on the island or now robocop apparently

I wish they got someone who was closer to Jackie Chan in terms of physical acting because the action scenes are pretty dull, but I like that the Chris Tucker replacement is more of a Chris Rock type character.

John Foo is actually a legit martial artist and stunt man which is probably why he was cast, he's no Jackie Chan of course but you're not going to find another Jackie Chan, much less one that wouldn't be completely wasted in a CBS show. I haven't seen the show but if the action scenes aren't good its probably down to the filming and editing rather than Foo's ability.

e: I think i'll watch it though, I like a fun action show and if it's even half decent there's a chance i'll enjoy it.

NBC would have shitcanned it there, but they made a Hail Mary deal with DirecTV (which, ironically, Silverman helped arrange) that allowed for one more short season. The writers retconned almost all of Season 2 in a Shield-inspired opening, screamed in each other's faces to psych each other up, and used the short season to deliver a better, tighter show. It did well enough for DirecTV that they ordered two more short seasons; they lucked into casting Michael B. Jordan and went out on loving fire.

Good summary, I don't recall any retconning of season 2 though, just a quick explanation of what happened after that season ended and a wrap up of loose ends, and some plot threads were ignored. Retconning implies that things that happened were made not to have happened or happened differently. Maybe i'm remembering it wrong. Heck even Jason's baby from the 80s guy-esque pregnancy plotline showed up later.

Personally I never take an action show's choreography and pacing or anything else by the pilot alone.

For sure, they always pack a pilot like Lethal Weapon with tons of stunts and action. Week to week won't be on the same level, just look at the average ep of something like Hawaii five-0 or Blindspot for what network action can produce. But at least the characters show signs of potential to still be a fun watch.

Wandle Cax

There were two things of note in the premiere of Hawaii five-0 which i'm sure nobody else here watches. One was a ridiculous and cool extended parkour chase scene, but the other was a bizarre and ghoulish cameo from "Jack Lord" which appeared to be some kind of CGI mannequin who appeared briefly to give some advice on McGarrett's legacy or something. Although the results were a bit iffy that's fairly ambitious for a TV show I think.

The Office was good the whole time Michael was there. It went downhill after that of course but was still watchable. The lowlight was everything with Pam and Jim in the last season, including the sound guy and the sports startup and all that. The finale was nice.

Wandle Cax
Dec 15, 2006
Yeah Lethal Weapon's great. It's got the action and fun but what makes it work is that the main buddy pair consists of decent actors with serviceable writing but their relationship is really effective . The series would have not worked at all otherwise - when you have mediocre characters in a show like this you get Rush Hour.
