Arrentish expansion into the forests of the Nemchek was inevitable. The Empire had conquered most of the continent, bringing millions of people under the banner of Her Imperial Majesty Queen Krelo, and her legions were happy to march further and further away from home, crushing dissent by the sword. But the Nemchek were not to be so easily squashed. Krelo's eldest daughter and heir apparent, Princess Jocasta, led the elite Praetorienne Guard into Nemchek thinking it would be a routine conquest. Little did she know that the Nemchek and their allies - the free peoples of the woods, hills, and seas - had been united and mobilized by the dark wizard Qal into a mighty horde. Worse yet, Qal had managed to slip spies into Jocasta's camp, sabotaging her supply lines and murdering her trusted confidants. The night before the first battle was silent, as if the world itself was holding its breath, waiting to see how history will unfold...

:siren: WARNING THIS IS A LONG POST BUT PLEASE READ IT ALL EVEN IF YOU HAVE PLAYED SOLDIERS GAMES BEFORE THANK YOU :siren:

== INTRODUCTION ==

Welcome to the recruitment thread for this game of mafia! This game is hosted by EccoRaven, comodded by Asiina, and designed with help by TaoJones! This game is played in the style of Soldiers of the Wasteland, a mafia format invented by 50 Pounds of Bread. Aside from the standard mafia rules, there are additional mechanics and features in play.

The game will be divided into two threads, each with its separate mafia teams who are allied with the opposing thread (i.e. Thread A has Mafia B and Thread B has Mafia A; A wins with A, B with B). Periodically the two threads will meet on the Field of Battle, where a select number of players can perform feats of strength and skill to murder the enemy, reducing their numbers further. The game ends when a Leader is killed, granting defeat to that side and victory to the other.

This game's flavor makes it a prequel to the game An Adventure in Arrentia. It takes place in the same universe as all my other Fantasy-inspired games (such as Lady Clarent's Calamity, and the Bandits of Bishadh). Knowledge of these games is not necessary but can be helpful or enriching.

== LEADERS AND TEAMS ==

Each thread will have a Leader. This leader is confirmed town, cannot be nightkilled, has a host of special powers and abilities (making them a beast on the battlefield), can communicate with the opposing game's scumteam, and has insider knowledge on the setup hidden from the rest of the thread. However, much like a game of chess, if your Leader is ever killed (either by execution or on the battlefield), your INSTANTLY lose the game. So keep them safe!

The two threads/teams are The Praetorienne Guard of the Empire of Arrentia led by the intrepid Princess Jocasta, versus The Free Horde led by the dark wizard Qal.

Much like real life, the Leaders will be selected by the Divine (me) from those who sign up and request consideration to be a Leader. I should probably have figured this out ahead of time but oh well wishes and horses and all that. The Leaders will then decide who gets to be in which thread probably taking your desires into consideration idk I am not them.

Each thread will have twenty-five players. That means FIFTY PLAYERS need to sign up for this game. ACK!! That's a lot! But I think we can do it, I am pretty sure, like 90%.

== PHASES AND BATTLE ==

The game is divided into three separate phases: Day, Preliminary, and Battle. During the day phase people vote and post like normal; majority vote is needed to execute a player, and, depending on the Leaders' Agreement, can be enhanced into Lights Out voting (both Thread Leaders must agree to it with me via PM). Once the Day phase is over, everyone who was successfully executed will be killed and flipped, and Preliminary will begin.

During the Preliminary phase, the Leaders conscript six players from their thread to be in Battle. The field of battle is divided into two RANKS for each team: a front rank and a rear rank, with the front ranks facing each other and rear ranks behind them. Three players must be in each rank. Some players may have abilities that affect an entire rank; other players are more skilled in certain ranks than others. Inform your Leader so they can make an informed choice about where to place you. At the end of the Preliminary phase both sides will know who is in the battle and where they are fighting. This will start the Battle phase.

During the Battle phase, each conscripted player must use ONE battle ability if they are able to do so. Battle abilities are typically specified as either MELEE or RANGE. MELEE abilities may ONLY be used in the rank directly ahead of you. RANGE abilities may ONLY be used two ranks ahead of you. See Appendix B for an example of a battle layout that shows what I mean more clearly. Some battle abilities are considered PHYSICAL and others are MAGIC; these mostly affect buffs and resistances.

Also during the Battle phase, the mafias in each thread may perform a nightkill if they wish.

When Battle is concluded, damage will be determined, players whose HP fall to 0 or below will be killed and flipped (see STATS below), and the team with the fewest deaths will be considered the Victor. The nightkill, if any, will be posted, and the game continues again with another Day phase.

The game continues in that fashion until a Leader is dead. Remember that leaders cannot be nightkilled, but they can put themselves into battle as one of the six if they so wish (but why would they? It would be so foolish). If a thread has six or fewer players left in it, then the leader MUST put themselves in battle whether they like it or not.

== ABILITIES AND STATS ==

Another difference between this game and most mafia games are the roles. There ARE no standard "Vanilla" "Cop" "Etc." roles in this game! Rather, players will have a selection of powers and abilities they may use at different times in the game that will have different effects. Some powers are strictly offensive, and allow a player to attack another in battle. Others are investigative, and allow a player to discover details of another player's roles or abilities. Still more are healing-based, and allow a player to restore lost health to another.

Each ability has restrictions on its use, the biggest being it may only be used during the phase specified (DAY, PRELIMINARY, or BATTLE). Some abilities are limited use (e.g. "OPG" means it may only be used once per game, "2PG" twice per game, and so on). Most Battle abilities specify the range (MELEE or RANGE) and type (PHYSICAL or MAGIC). See the Battle section above for more information. Players may typically only use one action per phase, so e.g. they may do one action during the Day, another during the Preliminary phase, and a third during Battle. Note that your Day phase ends when your thread throws its final hammer down, and/or the deadline is reached. You must submit your Day actions before then or else they are forfeit.

Abilities are enhanced through five different stats. Each player starts with 10 stat points that they must distribute when they receive their role PM. Each stat needs at least 1 point, and typically cannot have more than 3. Most players have abilities that require a wide range of stats, but with limited stat points they must decide whether to min-max (making them very effective in narrow circumstances and worthless in others) or to take a more balanced approach (giving them broader range but less influence).

Each player also has a specific Class and Cultural Identity, assigned by RNG before the start of the game. Your Class and Culture further enhance your abilities for free. Most players also have some Notable Gear that typically provides minor buffs or healing as Day actions.

Finally, each player has a set number of Hit Points (HP) assigned by RNG before the start of the game. If a player's hit points reach 0, they are killed. As long as a player has at least 1 HP, they remain in the game. However, the weaker they are from fighting, the worse they will be able to use their abilities.

:siren: SPECIAL ABILITY/STAT RULES:siren:

You MUST NOT ever post specific numbers about the damage you can deal or your health or stats. If you are ever in doubt, just abstain from specifics. This rule is because you all will try to game the system otherwise and where's the fun in that.

Good phrasing: "I am good at range." "I suck noodles at melee, but I am ok at range." "I have a magic melee attack that can kill probably anyone." "I have high Charisma but low everything else." "I have almost no health left." "I can target two dudes with one attack" (numbers are fine as long as you're not talking actual damage, stats, or HP).

Bad phrasing: "I have 2 HP left." "I can deal 6 damage melee, 3 range." "I have Strength 4 and Agility 3." "I can heal 3 damage." "I can target two dudes with one attack dealing 5 damage to each of them."

== THE MAFIA ==

Each thread has a scum faction that is allied with the town in the opposite thread. There are 5-7 players total in this faction. These players have abilities and actions that follow the same rules as above, but with some slight differences:
- During Battle, if a scum-aligned player has a MELEE ability, they may use it only on THEIR OWN rank. A scum-aligned player with a RANGE ability may use it only on the rank directly ahead of them.
--- NOTE: Scum battle abilities are a degree more powerful than town's; a Leader who puts scum in battle is almost certainly going to have more casualties as a result.

- The scum get a nightkill that they may use during the Battle phase. The scum player performing the nightkill must NOT be in the battle themselves, and likewise the target of the kill must not be conscripted for battle either. If there are no free scum players to perform a kill because they are all in battle, then there can be no nightkill that phase.
--- NOTE: because of the HP mechanics, the nightkill is modified. It is NOT an assured kill, rather, it is an ability that causes 5HP in damage. This is enough to insta-kill many players at full health and seriously maim the rest. As the game goes on and players lose health, the kill becomes more and more effective.
--- NOTE2: Because the kill is not instantly assured, if you are a mafia player who wants to kill a lot of townies, your best bet is to be in battle.

== ERRATA AND MISCELLANY ==
  • The threads are NOT mirrored. There are more of some classes in one thread than in another. Do not predict alignment based on threads having equal numbers of certain classes, cultures, etc.
  • The Cultures and Classes are largely RNG'd. They do not predict alignment.
  • REMEMBER: DO NOT TALK DAMAGE, STAT, OR HP NUMBERS EVER.
  • Your abilities do exactly what they say they do. Unlike most Ecco games, in this one you must assume your role PMs are full and accurate as I have laid them out. There are no lies or mod trickery this game.
:iiam: I will update this section with more details I have forgotten to include above.

== APPENDICES ==

Appendix A
Here is a sample role PM.

Sample Role PM posted:

Name: Petrovna (aka: DRAGNIX)
Alignment: TOWN
HP: 6
Culture: Ruzelian
Class: Heavy
-----------------

Culture Bonus: Start with the ability Call of the Wild
Class Bonus: Can allot 4 Strength; +2 to melee
Notable Gear: Imperial Armor (provides Armor 1: -1 damage from physical attacks); Herbs x3 (heal 1 HP during the Day)

Strength:
Agility:
Stamina:
Spirit:
Charisma:

Abilities:

Call of the Wild (OPG, Preliminary):
- If selected for the battle, you may secretly transform yourself into a powerful beast, granting you +2 Strength during battle. If you do not successfully kill a player in battle, you will lose 5 HP at the start of the next Day phase.

Hold the Line (Battle: physical, melee)
- Draw your halberd! Deal Strength(+2) damage. Agility / 4 chance to block your target if they targeted you for a melee attack in kind.

Chop-Chop (Battle: physical, melee)
- Deal Strength(+2) damage, with additional points for every level of Stamina you have over your target.

Teeth of the Skinchanger (Battle: magic, range)
- Deal Agility*.5 damage (rounded up), with an additional point if your Spirit is 3 or above.

Gallows Humor (Day)
- Target a player in your thread. Heal Charisma HP on them, and half as much on you (rounded up).

Let's say Dragnix decides to distribute his 10 skill points thusly:
- 4 into Strength, taking advantage of his Class bonus;
- 2 into Agility
- 2 into Stamina
- 1 into Spirit (remember this is the MINIMUM required for each stat); and
- 1 into Charisma

Dragnix's role PM would then look like this:

quote:

Name: Petrovna (aka: DRAGNIX)
Alignment: TOWN
HP: 6(+1)= 7
Culture: Ruzelian
Class: Heavy
-----------------

Culture Bonus: Start with the ability Call of the Wild
Class Bonus: Can allot 4 Strength; +2 to melee
Notable Gear: Imperial Armor (provides Armor 1: -1 damage from physical attacks); Herbs x3 (heal 1 HP during the Day)

Strength: 4
Agility: 2
Stamina: 2
Spirit: 1
Charisma: 1

Deal 4(+2) damage. 2/4-> 50% chance to block your target if they targeted you for a melee attack in kind.

Chop-Chop (Battle: physical, melee)
- Deal 4(+2) damage, with additional points for every level of Stamina you have over your target.

Teeth of the Skinchanger (Battle: magic, range)
- Deal 2*.5= 1 damage, with an additional point if your Spirit is 3 or above. (ed: since Drag's spirit is only 1, this doesn't apply)

Gallows Humor (Day)
- Target a player in your thread. Heal 1 HP on them, and half as much on you (rounded up). (ed:1/2 of 1 rounded up is 1HP, obviously).

Observe how Dragnix just replaced the <Stat> words in his abilities with their numerical value. There is no such thing in this game as "Stamina damage" or "Charisma items" - those refer only to your stat values (e.g. in Dragnix's case, "2 damage" and "1 item" respectively).

Note that, because it is VERBOTEN to discuss actual numbers in this game, you may use this role PM as a reference. Dealing 6 damage is considered a Very Good amount of damage to deal. Having 6(+1) HP is considered a Decent amount of health. Healing 1 HP is considered a Very Poor healing ability.

Had Dragnix more evenly distributed his stats (perhaps 3/2/2/1/2), he would find his strength-based attacks are weakened only slightly (and can be easily offset by his OPG ability), and now he can heal a little better too (healing two health instead of just one).

In general concentrating all of your stats into one category is going to be risky and will, generally, outweigh the benefits of moderation and prudence.

Appendix B

Here is a sample Battle layout.

code:
    T H R E A D A

Rear A: Illandir | Fitsfadda | Sloppo

Front A: Dragnix | Token Female | Kloaked

-----------------

Front B: God of Evil Cows | chellesandcheese | Iron Chef Ramen

Rear B: Lomil | Mills | Savington

    T H R E A D B
In this battle setup, the players in Rear A can only use melee abilities on Front Rank A, but can use range abilities on Front Rank B. Front Rank A can use melee abilities on Front Rank B, and range abilities on Rear Rank B. The inverse is true for the B ranks.

EXAMPLE BATTLE:
Let's say Dragnix uses his unbuffed Hold the Line ability from his role PM above. Because the attack is melee, and he is in the Front rank, he may only use it on the opposing front rank. He may use it on anyone in that rank however; the orders within the ranks are arbitrary. Let's say he uses it on GOEC; barring protections or armor or the like, GOEC will receive 6 points of damage. Let's say GOEC also decided to melee attack Dragnix in kind for a physical attack that does 4 points of damage. Because Dragnix put 2 points in Agility, Dragnix has a 50% chance to automatically negate GOEC's attack. If GOEC's attack goes through, though, because Dragnix has the gear Imperial Armor, Dragnix would only suffer 3 damage instead of 4.

Note that because Dragnix's strongest abilities are melee, he is best served in the front rank. If he is in the rear rank, he could only use his Teeth ability, dealing a paltry 1 damage on a target in the Front B rank. However, because he is in the front rank, he is exposed to both the Front B melee attackers AND the Rear B range attackers, meaning he is that much more likely to be hurt (and maybe even killed) during battle.

EXAMPLE SCUM ACTION:
Let's say in the above battle Lomil and Token Female are both scum for their respective factions. Lomil has a range ability that deals 6 physical damage, while Token Female has a magickal melee ability that does 8. Because Lomil is scum and his power is range, he can only target players in the Front B rank, so he hurls a javelin into GOEC's back and deals 6 damage. (Combined with the 6 he received from Dragnix, this will almost certainly kill him.) Token, meanwhile, has a melee ability, which means she can only target players in her own rank. She decides to fill Dragnix's armor with lava, dealing 8 damage. Because Imperial Armor only protects against physical attacks, Dragnix is dealt the full 8 points. Since Dragnix only has 7 HP total, barring another player's buff or protection during the battle, he, too, will die.

EXAMPLE INVESTIGATIVE ACTION:
Let's say Mills and Kloaked respectively have a Special action that allows them to investigate players; Mills can see who a player targets, while Kloaked can determine a player's abilities. Mills decides to "track" GOEC, seeing him target Dragnix. Kloaked meanwhile reveals Token Female's abilities, and finds one titled "Hot Pants (Battle: magic, melee): Deal Spirit+3(+2) damage to a player in range." When the battle resolves and Dragnix and GOEC both die, Mills incorrectly concludes that GOEC must have killed Dragnix and announces as such to his thread. Kloaked asks Token Female who she targeted during the battle, and she says "GOEC," since a town-melee ability only can target the rank directly in front. Since nobody looked at Lomil, nobody saw him javelin GOEC in the back. In this way both scum managed to get away with murder.

Note that there will be many abilities that rely on or are enhanced by other players' stats (e.g. "deal an additional point in damage for every level of <STAT> you have over your target" "heal Spirit health with additional points equal to your target's Charisma" etc.). It WILL benefit you to put points even in your non-ability stats!

===========================

STAT BONUSES:

- Diseased (no vote; rare ability)
- Frightened (-1 to all stats during battle; often a result of targeting a DREADFUL player. Wears off one battle after receiving it, unless specifically healed).

Note that Ailments cannot be directly healed by HP-healing actions, and can only be removed either by waiting out their symptoms (On Fire, Frightened), or by being specifically targeted with an Ailment healing action (or by dying).

Appendix D

NOTE ON ITEMS:

If an item grants you a particular boon that affects your STATS (e.g. "+1 to Agility" "can use Dance Revolution ability"), consider it a PASSIVE ITEM. It is either used in Battle (if an ability), or can never be used as it always has an effect (if a general stat increaser).

if an item grants you a particular boon that affects your HEALTH or some other REGULARLY FLUCTUATING PART OF YOUR ROLE (e.g. "+1 HP"), consider it an ACTIVE ITEM. It can be used ONLY during the Day. Only ONE item may be used per day. Unless otherwise specified, these usable items are ONE SHOT, and are EXPENDED upon their use. You may only use items on yourself, and you may NOT pass them to other players.

ITEMS CAN BE STOLEN OR DESTROYED OR OTHERWISE LOST AGAINST YOUR WILL! Keep your gear close to your chest!

Appendix E

BATTLEFIELD LOCATIONS
In addition to troop positions, Leaders may also decide to fight on specific Battlefields. These battlefields have general boons and damages associated with fighting on them, and come with them a great deal of risks, but if a leader is persistent they can achieve significant rewards. The first battle selection will be decided by a trial of wits (Rock Paper Scissors) or coin if both leaders are perfectly symmetrical for too long. After that battlefield selection will alternate.

Note: as of Patch 1.0.10, locations can only be selected four times total. This is solely because you are all secretly beta testers, dwi.

The battlefield locations are:
:hist101:
Dromay
The Imperial capital is a bastion of wealth and power, and is the cornerstone of Her Imperial Majesty's power. If Qal can sack it, it would cripple the whole Empire.
DEFENDED TERRITORY: May only be attacked if Qal has achieved victory at The Hillsbog.
Jocasta Benefit: May place an additional soldier in the Rear rank. All soldiers temporarily gain +1HP at the start of the battle.
Qal Benefit: If victorious, all Jocasta players instantly suffer -1HP. All physical abilities are permanently reduced by 2.

:gas:
The Hillsbog
The rugged hills and poisonous marshes of Bishadh scare away even the most daring of warriors. Unfortunately for Qal, it is the only way to get to the Via Cerenia, the road to Dromay...
Universal Effect: All players in battle, unless properly resistant, instantly suffer -1HP from Poison damage and will receive the POISONED ailment. Bishadher players temporarily receive the following Passive ability: Terrain Mastery - become untargetable to ranged attacks.

:gibs:
The Battlefield
Jocasta's legions and Qal's Horde initially meet on a long plain, far away from their respective civilizations. The air is dry, trees are sparse, but the sun is warm. This is a good place to die.
There is no benefit or drawback to fighting here.

:black101:
Jaharod
The hills of the Livireen, fed by the mighty aqueducts of the River Kings, are the source of iron and steel feeding Qal's horde. If it could be raided and pillaged, Qal would need to regroup, leaving his heartland exposed!
Universal Effect: All Livireen players receive the status effect IMPETUOUS for the duration of the battle regardless of health. All other players suffer -1 Stamina for the duration of the battle.

:shopkeeper:
The Black Woods of Nemchy
This is what we came for. Time to draw the whip and show these brutes what civilization feels like.
DEFENDED TERRITORY: May only be attacked if Jocasta has achieved victory at the Jaharod.
Qal Benefit: Can place a fourth player in the Front rank. All magick abilities have +1 effect.
Jocasta Effect: If victorious, all Qal players instantly suffer -1 HP. All magick abilities in the Qal thread are permanently reduced by 2.

APPENDIX F

Patches to the rules:

1.0.8: a specific change to certain abilities' timings.

1.0.9: clarification on FRIGHTENED and IMPETUOUS status effects' effect time.

1.0.10: limited battlefield selection; regulations on the window for when actions can be revised

1.0.11: clarification on limited-use actions vs. STUNNED status.

1.0.12: new policy to encourage voting, and clarification on what happens when a thread is out of scum

1.0.13: clarification on battle requirements re: too few players

FAQ/Quick Summary:

1) "Ecco what the hell this is a lot of words"

A: Yes I know, but in general it's just a Soldiers game with some fairly standard RPG elements on top.

2) "That sounds a lot like Fantasy World at War. Is this just Fantasy World at War II?"

A: This is the spiritual successor. TaoJones helped me design the setup and inspired me for many of the roles and abilities.

3) "I have played many soldiers games before, including Fantasy WaW. Can I skip your OP?"

A: It will mostly be familiar so if you skim it that's fine but if you miss something that's all on you.

4) "Can I be a leader I wanna be the guy"

A: You can! Just post in the thread saying you're interested and why you'd be a good leader and I will consider you for the job. Remember being a leader is a BIG responsibility and is also very stressful, only offer if you have the time/emotional energy to handle it.

5) "I really wanna sign up Ecco but I think you're a poopbaby who smells like farts."

A: Yes well, at the very least, if only because of the huge necessity of players required, I am willing to overlook (almost) all my Stupid Mafia Prejudices and let virtually anyone in the game. All will be treated equally and fairly regardless of our History together.

6) "I really wanna sign up Ecco but you have a Reputation, so how many weeks after it fills up will the game actually start?"

A: Zero. Unlike past Ecco endeavors, this game has its role PMs all written. With the few extra days needed to fill this game up I can polish them and everything should be totally ready by the time it's full. I know, I am surprised too.

7) "I just noticed a mechanic that seems SUPER BROKEN WHAT WERE YOU THINKING"

A: I am only human and I have never done this before, please let me know and I will do whatever I can to fix it.

8) "I am a really new player, is this a game I should play?"

A: Sure! Yeah! It's going to be fun so why not have fun let's do it wooooooo

9) "Is this game going to be a trainwreck?"

A: Maybe, probably, but it'll be a fun one. Or, well, at least memorable.

I'd like to be the face of a thread but realistically I'd be a poor choice for the actual responsibilities 😸

Oh and I would be a good leader because holy poo poo do I love spreadsheets and I do have the time to commit to the role. Also, I like feeling superior.

I'd be a good leader because I have lots of free time for the next few months and am very lovable and have played way too much mafia over the past 6 years

I actually think this would be a good game for a new player. It's obviously huge and kind of impenetrable in some respects but I feel like even if you're unfamiliar with the social mores of mafia you'll still be able to engage with the RPG elements.

I would vote for him to be King, that's how monarchy works.

yeah it'll definitely keep you more engaged and playing to a goal over getting some role like tracker or vanila and not really knowing what to do with it
