Every other game line is some form of, "you're a monster; how do you deal with your existence?" (Well, I hear Geist is pretty upbeat apparently; I don't know much about that one.)

I'm going to re-inforce for the thread that I have trash taste, I actually really like the Sin Eaters. But, basically

Geist: The Sin Eaters posted:

Mood
The mood of a Geist chronicle is informed by morbidity, but not shackled to it. The protagonists are alive, given a second chance and the ability to experience the worlds of both living and dead. And like many people around the world, in this age and every other, they look on the specter of mortality and laugh. Eat, drink and make merry, as the adage goes, for tomorrow you may die. Geist is informed by Dia del los Muertos and Carnivale, by Halloween festivals and solstice fires.
Of course, not all those who look upon Death choose to live as a bon vivant. Some act with desperation; others act out pageants of wrath and revenge or a grim, final justice. They may laugh at gallows-humor and make love furiously into the night, or they may choose to walk by themselves at night, finding beauty in the stillness and dark. But they are alive, every last one.
This is the emotion that fuels the Bound. You have died. You will die again — you know this. Death surrounds you wherever you look. The multitudes of the dead are your cohorts and your responsibility. But you are alive, and can pursue whatever life means to you. Live.

Here's the quick compare-and-contrast between Sin Eaters and Beasts.
  • Sin Eaters, like vampires, used to be Mortals, with an unexplained 'something special' that makes them viable conduits for Geists to possess, giving both Mortal and Geist a second chance at life as a Sin Eater.
  • Beasts are not human, and never really where. They also have a 'something special' that changes them, but it's a 'homecoming', a return to being an inhuman thing, rather than returning changed from the gates of death.

  • Sin Eaters died. They have reason to respect and cherish life, to treat it as something precious and fleeting, and if nothing else have their mortality thrust in their face, and asked to re-evaluate what is important to them. What does living mean to them? What's really important in life?
  • Beasts are immortal existances, part of the primordial dream, that have existed since humankind huddled around firelight in the stone age. There's a certain LACK of reflection on their part as they continue trying to teach 'lessons' to a humanity that has largely outgrown their necessity.

  • Sin Eaters have responsibilities. Deathsight opens their eyes to the world of the dead, and means that every ghost KNOWS that the Sin Eater can see and hear them. Even though they are returned to the world of the living, the dead and in-between are part of their existence now. Sin Eaters are intended to be shepherds of the dead. Their energy stat, Plasm, is restored by a few points when they indulge their Vice or destroy and devour a ghost, but are fully refilled by indulging their virtue or helping a ghost pass on peacefully. Sin Eaters are pushed to be principled, if not necessarily moral individuals. A full archetype for Sin Eaters does exist for those who are more concerned with indulging themselves
  • Beasts indulge their monstrous appetites. They may 'teach lessons', in a brutal and monstrous way, but what really drives them is the hunger and satiety of their inhuman souls. Beasts are in it for themselves, despite whatever ideas of being 'family' to other monsters they might harbor.

Sin-Eaters may engage less with the 'I am a monster, how do I deal with it' dilemma than the other splats do, but at least they clear the low bar of 'Not a terrible rear end in a top hat' that all Beasts seem to set.

I'm glad to hear people say nice things about Geist, to be honest. I've heard a lot of people denounce it as 'Undead superheroes that don't belong in the world of darkness', 'They have nothing to drive them to go on adventure', 'completely mechanically broken' and I get that negative response so often I've just kind of gotten used to it being 'that one splat nobody likes'.

That first part with the Elf is a call-back to earlier versions of D&D when detecting secrets was a racial ability of Elves, but as far as I know that isn't a thing in 3rd Edition anymore. Further, "passing within 10 feet" implies that maybe the writer was still in the older D&D mindset of a 10-foot gridded map, whereas 3rd Edition was already using 5-foot squares.

Still a thing. Elves only get "entitled to a Search check to notice it as if she were actively looking for [secret doors]", and it's 5 feet instead of 10 feet, but it's still a thing that exists.

STRETCH

The Stretch is a Delta capable of treating their own body like rubber to elongate, grow or slip through small spaces. It’s the Mr. Fantastic powerset.

Your limbs can stretch up to 30 feet. You can squish yourself and slip through a hole as small as an inch wide. You can also increase your height or width or both if you really stretch up to 5 times your size. A Stretch also gets natural body armor: 10/- against Piercing attacks, 20/- against Blunt attacks. Everything else goes through. They also get fast healing rolls every eight hours, on par with the Tough. For Tricks, they get:

Pliable Face: Extra successes on a Spirit roll add +1 to Disguise rolls.

Superstretch: Every extra success on a Spirit roll gives +1 yard to a single limb’s stretch.

Wrap Attack: Extra successes on a barehanded roll can be used to grapple a target. Make a hit location roll for every extra success and then make a single Strength roll that applies damage to all locations at once. The grapple is automatic and requires a close combat roll to get loose from the grapple.

Thoughts on the Stretch: You’re a weakened Tough with some other abilities tacked on and it’s honestly surprising this doesn’t have any downsides. The ability to slip through cracks isn’t that bad, stretching isn’t awful. I would rather be a Tough, though. I would rather have that flat 20 armor for everything. The big seller is the grappling but even then it’s nothing special.

She’s an American Indian with Stretch powers and I don’t have much more to say. She doesn’t have much to her stats and doesn’t have much to her quirks and there’s not much to her period.

I feel like a Stretcher Spy would be pretty good? Octo-Bond, with the ability to disguise his face, wriggle through tight places, and is tough and good at melee combat.

EDIT: Between Octobond and Splodehog we're 2 deltas into a bizarre gimmick team of animal-codename deltas.

Just on the subject of CofD has anyone had a read of the Leviathan fan game that someone brought out? I think it had a few good ideas but needed some work, what about you guys?

PKFan2004 was doing a writeup of it, thought it doesn't look like he finished it.

EDIT: Looking at it again, there are a lot of elements in Leviathan that also get touched on in beast, but are portrayed in a much less rosy light. Both are ancient gribblies from the Epoch Primordial, but Leviathan doubles down on how the world's moved on from them, how they're living relics, stagnating. Beasts? No, they still are needed by humanity, their lessons are still relevant!

The Leviathan's version of Beasts' 'everyone likes me' aura is The Wake, which is inverted: Instead of making supernaturals love you (Canadian Vampire Girlfriend) and this being treated as something natural, born of deep instinctual kinship, The Wake is deeply unnatural and mortals to worship and fear the Leviathan. In effect, it's not so much a wonderful boon as reverse Disquiet, something that dents the Leviathan's ability to relate to humanity.

Hey, you know what would improve this thread?

Literally any other topic.

I've been reading Promethean and I found a tiny editing hiccup that annoyed me earlier.

Early in a chapter, you're told you need 10 Roles completed to perform the New Dawn, and they mention that those roles can come from one role from all 10 Refinements, or 3 roles Each from 4 different Refinements, either being fine.

However later when they describe actually performing the New Dawn ascension, if you roll on in with the latter, your new Human form is going to have the 'Broken' condition permanently and be a shattered wreck of a human being who's wracked with nightmares and has terrible amnesia.

It's a very annoying (and unintentional) 'Gotcha!', if you don't read ahead/read carefully, since you have to pick the 10 Roles you take before beginning play and aren't supposed to be changed.
