Watched the first four episodes of this, and I'm hoping it improves a lot from here. There's so much about it that just feels lazy or poorly thought-out. Like the scale of the world. It feels like the show must be set on a small island, because everything is easy walking distance from everything else. It makes it hard to get a feel for the stakes. And it does the same thing with time, where it seems like there's supposed to be this epic backstory that's faded into legend, but also it happened 30 years ago and a whole lot of people should just remember it as fact? Also, it's hard to take it seriously when there are characters called things like Al-Anon and Eritrea, and the magic tree is the L-Crease. It all just sounds really dumb. Oh, and every time they refer to the princess "carrying the tree's seed" it really sounds like it impregnated her. I'm also disappointed that the post-apocalyptic nature of the world doesn't seem to be relevant in any way. Like, they don't use remnants of old forgotten technology or live in the ruins of ancient cities or anything. And where are these gnomes everyone's always going on about? Or the dwarfs? Why is everyone a human or an elf? It's not bad so far, but I can't really get invested in it at this stage. If it carries on like this it'll probably end up being entirely forgettable.

Oh, and another thing I just remembered. That bit where the soldiers are all standing in a circle with their torches and there are magical wolves or something, then Eritrea shows up and suddenly there are no wolves? What was going on there?

enraged_camel posted:Sure, but it's pretty obvious that Amberlee holds a deep grudge against Eretria that's borne out of jealousy. Will isn't able to convince her to make even a small concession, such as replacing Eretria's chain bindings with rope. Except wouldn't the king have said "Don't be an idiot, give everyone horses"?

enraged_camel posted:I like that the rover dude ended up looking out for himself in the end. That guys character is fluctuating so wildly it's about the only thing I can remember about the show. For the first couple of episodes he's just completely evil and ready to sell Eritrea the moment she's of no further use to him, then he's suddenly friendly and self-sacrificing and in it for the team for the end of one episode and most of the next, and then he's looking out for himself but is still basically a good guy. That "you deserved better" line was really bizarre, because that absolutely doesn't fit with his character as established at all.

So, Al-Anon knows where the bad guy is and can get there easily. Has some reason been given for why he hasn't just gone there and killed him? And what were the things that Amberly picked up? I thought they were more elf stones, but I guess not? And what's with Will's "don't kill bad guys" attitude? That guy literally wanted to kill him and cut off his ears, and he's like "no, we can't kill him". What other option did you have? Let him go, so he can go back to his friends and they can all come after you?

Sober posted:The high fantasy look of the characters and setting contrasted against the ruins of post-apocalyptic nuclear/information age ruins is actually super cool to see so it sucks that most of the show is just high fantasy landscape pans most of the time. Hopefully more of that pops up more as I assume they have to maybe look for a church in an old downtown area or something. It's actually a refreshing take on the "old elven ruins" schtick you see in a lot of high fantasy settings, it's a shame we've seen so little so far. Yeah, one of the main reasons I'm still watching is to see what they do with the ruins of civilisation angle.

Chairman Capone posted:The village of the Kirk-worshipping steampunk hipster gun nuts was so ridiculous it was by far my favorite episode of this show. I really want more episodes to focus on ridiculous stuff like that rather than LOTR ripoff stoylines. Gyges posted:Hell, how the gently caress did a working projector and film reel make it? hollylolly posted:It took me half a second to realize they were booing Spock because they thought he was an elf. Even the sacrificing people to trolls thing could have been excusable. It obviously wouldn't be sustainable longterm, and they seemed to be building up their resources and defences. Add to that the fact that they were able to get the trolls to back off sufficiently to make this deal in the first place, there was probably going to be a standoff in the near future where the humans stopped the sacrifices and put up enough of a defence to make the trolls back off for good. But now they're all dead. Also, they started on the racism and telegraphed the human sacrifice thing way too hard, way too soon. We never had time to buy into Utopia being an actually good place full of good people to make it in any way impactful that they were actually baddies. Speaking of trolls though, we now know that the gnomes are just people, and the trolls are obviously intelligent enough to make truces and deals, so are they just more people too? If so, why do they eat humans? Is it a religious thing? It can't be an efficient food source.

Choadmaster posted:Like someone else said, gnomes, trolls, and and dwarves are mutated from human stock (as implied by the opening credits) and the elves have always been here. It's been about 2,000 years since the apocalypse, and I think nuclear and biological weapons are supposed to explain the rapid mutations. Speaking of which, this latest episode was pretty boring. Back to elf politics and the main quest. The tunnel and sign were neat, but didn't really shed any light on what made the world this way. Nor do any of the characters (other than those dead racists) really seem to care about the past at all. I know they've got important poo poo to do right now, but like I said, the stuff they're doing is boring. Best thing about the episode though was the suggestion on the screen near the end that we all start using the hastag #TheLastLeaf. Have they been doing those for each episode and I've just not noticed? Seems like they expect people to be way more engaged with this show than is actually likely.

Choadmaster posted:Badass magic battle between Allanon and the Dagda Mor (and maybe some awesome demon dragons or some other crazy poo poo from the book because come on, gently caress yeah): Nope. But here's a few seconds of them pointing fire sticks at each other though. Cool, right? The highlight for me though was the bit where Amberly turned into a tree, because all I could think was "I do not want to be a tree. I am a tree!" And if you don't recognise that, you should watch Lexx.
