I don't think it was overtly stated in the first two books. There were lots of hints and things said that suggested it. All I know is I knew it and I've only read the first two books so far, but I remember it being something that more dawned on me than was explicitly told to me. Either that, or I wasn't paying attention when it was mentioned. That's something that sort of disappointed me; all of the post-apocalyptic stuff was so overt. Honestly, none of that stuff would even be around thousands of years on. It could have been something interestingly teased at during the show instead of blowing their load on it in the opening fly-by.
