FYI, tix to Formula E at Long Beach aren't free this year, but they're still pretty cheap. $25 for GA and $35 for GA + Pit Lane walk. Race day is April 2.

Strategy is a much different beast. Safety cars/full course cautions are very rare in Formula 1 (one every few races, maybe?) compared to Indycar (two or three per race, easily) and pit stops are obviously longer, so when to pit and when to stay out plays a much larger role throughout the race and approaching the final stint.

The current Indycar champion, whose name escapes me at the moment, is an absolute wizard in going fast while conserving fuel and tires, and the extra laps he manufactures on the track translates into time saved in the pits, but often is more important in the flexibility it gives teams in when to pit/not pit under caution.

But in the end, it's the oval racing that will get you hooked on Indycar. There have been (and will be) snoozers, but the good ones will captivate you. The Indy 500 too, which has been ridiculously good since they introduced the new car.

As many times as I've watched this, I've only now just realized the speed he must have been going. What were they pulling coming out of T1 in 1985?

ed- Actually, this is perfect example of why Indy oval racing is incredible. Once you understand how close to the limit the drivers are pushing the cars, you will start to realize just how butt-clenching it is watching it.

I'd link the 2015 Fontana race here, but I don't want to get the wrong idea across. That thing was an anomaly. A glorious, glorious anomaly.

If they had come out and moved to break up truck races into a series of continuous heat races every X number of laps over a full race distance, I'd bet this would have been received differently.

But a fookin' clock?!? Glad I got out of the NASCAR shitshow years ago. If you're wanting to capture audiences with increasingly shorter attention spans, doubling-down on artificial competitiveness is a horrible way of doing it.

Flip side is if iRacing got it right at all, even with downforce tire wear will still result in some speed gaps. Iowa runs a ton of downforce but fresh tires versus worn tires still separate the field by quite a bit.

I'd like to see it play out like this. There are other ways to slow cars down than to mess with the aero. If all that downforce will grind away the tires quickly, that'll do the job. Would make for more srategy and more passing around pit stops, too.

Herta merges with Andretti, effectively making Andretti a 4-car team again. Herta will be the race strategist/driver coach for the 98 car, but the driver is still TBA.

http://www.indycar.com/News/2016/02/02-18-AA-BHA-Merge-Under-Andretti-umbrella

Sounds like BHA will just be a satellite of Andretti, kind of like how Ganassi had four cars split among two distinct teams a while back. But this also makes it seems as if we're looking at one less car on the grid this year.

That's what I meant. 3 full time + 1 part time at AA with 1 full time at BHA now becomes 4 full time at AA/BHA. So a half a car less this year, then.

The cars at Phoenix were generating a ridiculous amount of downforce, perhaps as much as 6000 pounds. (Three tons!!!) Everyone realized that this made for poor racing conditions and started talking about reducing downforce, but then some smart people decided that would be a dumb thing to do and instead started talking about upping the turbo boost to full road course levels to make the cars faster down the straights and require drivers to, um, drive the cars in the turns.

Please please please

TV ratings.

quote:

The Verizon IndyCar Series' season-opening Grand Prix of St. Petersburg scored a 1.1 overnight rating for a preliminary estimate of 1.4 million viewers on ABC Sunday – a substantial increase over the 0.8 overnight for last year's race, also on ABC, which dropped to a 0.6 final rating and 891,000 viewers.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Phoenix scored a 3.6 overnight rating on FOX, down from a 3.8 last year.

Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Phoenix – also on the FOX broadcast network this week – earned a 1.2 overnight rating. It had a 1.6 rating last year, also on FOX.

If Indycar starts pulling better ratings than NXS, I wonder if that will cross a threshold that will start getting more sponsors to give Indycar a serious look.

If the racing wasn't as good as it has been at the Speedway since the DW12s were introduced, I don't know if it being the 100th race would attract as much interest by itself. I mean, it would have still sold out, but a sellout with two months to go? Doubt it.

I cannot imagine the level of hysteria that would be in the stands, with that big of a crowd, if there was another photo finish for The Goddamn 100th Indianapolis 500. I'm getting emotional just thinking about the possibility. I can't imagine what it would be like being there.
