You're assuming that, in the long line of fantasies that exists in the head of Mark Plourde, the fact that he is married is more real than the fact that he is a five-time CCWS champion.

You also never need to worry about tires blowing up because Firestone figured out a tire that gets slow long before it gets dangerous. Tracks like Iowa, you might take tires on any yellow even if you don't need fuel at all. Other tracks, the tires might be fine but it takes less time to change them than it does to refuel anyway, so you take a fresh set.

How many racing series these days still try to run in truly torrential downpours? They all create massive rooster tails of spray, and it really doesn't take much speed on standing water to hydroplane.

Speaking of old races, I watched a good chunk of the 1991 Long Beach race. I think it is actually one of the earliest races I can remember watching live on TV.

It's also been a long time since I've watched a race before pit speed limits, and now it seems so bizarre. That hit between Michael and Emmo in the pits is drat scary, Michael's helmet comes way too close to the pit wall for comfort.

Also, Uncle Bobby made no attempt at hiding his dislike of Michael by somehow arguing that Penske didn't gently caress up by sending Emmo out right in front of Michael.

I only now noticed that the lack of an engine cover on the car is doing a lot to make it look better, so I do hope Honda is doing some form of lower intake instead of the airbox up high. Aren't they allowed to redesign the intake plenum this year to do things like that?

So now Honda is officially signed back as a supplier, not that there seemed to be any doubt.

Flip side is if iRacing got it right at all, even with downforce tire wear will still result in some speed gaps. Iowa runs a ton of downforce but fresh tires versus worn tires still separate the field by quite a bit.

It's also the reality of the fact that they're working from the same basic chassis and they have the exact same overall goal. The boxes they have to play with aren't that big and you just aren't going to get that much visual differentiation.

I'd argue that, at least when compared to the pre-aero and early-aero days, even F1 cars all look substantially the same. The reason everything looked all crazy as poo poo back then is nobody really knew what they were doing.

yeah that's an important note. indy's downtown (the actual part of that is a downtown, which is small) is very nice and new, but it's mostly "great" in comparison to the rest of the city, which you probably wouldn't recognize as a city were it not called one. my brother is fond of calling it a "wide suburb" and i think that's pretty accurate.

Yup. I mean even compared to the cultural void and endless sprawl that is the Phoenix metro, it really isn't that much to write home about. If you have nothing better to do on Saturday (and that's not much of a stretch) and you want to experience something of a downtown, you're better off road tripping to Chicago. I did that for the first time last year and even though we only hit the Field and Shedd, it was awesome.

Given the line I sat in to pull into the parking lot at noon on Saturday... I would absolutely agree with that statement, and I didn't even stick around past around 3PM. Granted, they only opened a few sections of the Allison stands (which are arguably the best seats in the house anyway because of the glorious shade they provide) but the sections that were open felt about as populated as Fontana did on raceday, and I skipped the ghost town last year. And this was a goddamn test!

I forgot how much the mountains and overall layout of PIR make the cars sound a bit louder, too... definitely louder there than at Fontana or Indy.

No doubt, the weather was awesome this weekend (slightly warm in the sun, perfect in the abundant shade). But considering that we also had NHRA in town, getting that many people out to the far west side to watch practice still counts for something.

I'd love to never see Cheever, Goodyear, or Till calling an Indycar race again.

I'd pay extra for a feed that's just PT and other retired / underemployed drivers shooting the poo poo with no censors / filters on. Dario was so funny at Iowa when his engine blew up on the pace lap that I wish he hadn't gone to be Chip's Rick Mears.
