The HFPA decides what category a nominee falls into. The studio can submit however they like, but the HFPA makes the final call

The book (and movie) actually has a somewhat comedic tone to it, tbh. The Watney character is based in comedy, his light-hearted approach to things is the backbone of the story, which definitely comes across in a humouristic way much of the time. So to me it's not too outlandish to call it a "comedy" but overall I agree it should be in a drama category, but the golden globes is hosed with its categories so w/e

I know like lol Leo and awards but he had maybe 10 minutes of dialogue combined in The Revenant and spent a good amount of time being unconscious while actors dragged his crippled body around
