it's free to use and there are lots of extra features you can unlock if you donate or subscribe. I use them so I can have a prestigious-looking .org email and a static webpage. sometimes I even log into the shell and do stuff.

they are a really cool service and I hope they stick around for at least another 30 years. it's like living history, but for a computer.

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?

i bought the like 30$ package a few years ago but didn't realize there is a special, probably ancient-script-powered way of setting up password recovery and welp guess what i forgot. i registered another account and tried to ask some users about it on the built-in system chat system and they told me 1) oh suure, i bet you did lose your expensive account password , and 2) RTFM

yes they've updated the hardware somewhat but it's still running a lot of old code/scripts. gotta scale for the 21st century

they got rid of their Alpha servers in 2012 but I think you can still pay $36 for Lisp Genera access?

do they still have dialup? I might find that useful. I could take my TI Silent 700 on trips and send email at 300 baud, and have a record of it on indelible thermal paper

quote:

SDF provides dialup PPP (network) access in area codes of the US and Canada.
Connections can be made using an analog modem from 1200bps to 52000bps or
64kbps/128kbps ISDN. Dialup members may also use SDF's SMTP servers via
SMTP AUTH for outbound mail.

what is this 1200 baud nonsense

it's a really 80s solution to a 00s problem

also means if you need SDF for internet access you're not locked out for not having paypal etc (what the gently caress edge case is this but I'm sure they brought it up in committee)

idk what you want man, it's unix and it acts like a real old system, the actual hardware doesn't matter much as long as they can afford to run it on donations

meanwhile yospos goes nuts for an emulated bbs running on a raspberry pi or w/e

I guess I said it's free in the OP but it technically costs $1-3 to verify... so if anyone is genuinely interested in using this but too lazy to paypal $3... I will pay for one verification to be chosen at random. if you're interested write some words about why you love UNIX
