No best picture nod for Sicario is actually super hosed up. I've literally never heard of Trumbo at all. No Charlize Theron nod at all is also weird. And Ex Machina got snubbed. Lets go Mad Max

You probably could have cut Brooklyn, Bridge of Spies, and Spotlight/The Martian out of the best picture nominees. Otherwise, it's a big bowl of shrug. It was a weird year for movies that Steve Jobs is actually getting nominations and wins for a bad movie. Just don't let Eddie Redmayne or Jennifer Lawrence win again and I think everything is cool.

It looked like a good movie, and the exact sort of movie that the Academy would love.

Legit upset that Michael Jordan was largely snubbed from all the awards for Creed when he is the heart and soul of that film but everyone is falling over backwards to nominate a dinosaur who gives a passable performance.

But the T-Rex from Jurassic World wasn't nominated either? What a weak year for nominees. Charlize Theron is the only snub I care about but that's just probably because I love Charlize Theron in everything, especially her scenery chewing roles. Stallone seems hella locked in for that best supporting actor Oscar in lieu of lifetime achievement award thing the Academy loves to do.

This must present a real conundrum for the voters!

The Academy's love of biz self-commentary probably culminated with Birdman, which I don't think was a very good movie overall. A very trite script with a technically-challenging production. It unfortunately prevents you from reflecting on what's happening in any way, because it's so obsessed with being difficult to film.

Why not nominate Star Wars for best movie? You have 10 spots. It would at least allow them to look like they somewhat care about what audiences like and watch. I mean, it's a bit silly there's such a disconnect between the audience and the Academy voters. The highest grossing movie ever in like 3 weeks, which has gotten universal praise through audiences and reviewers isn't nominated for anything but technical awards. It just makes the Academy Awards look silly. At least a nomination would be some acknowledgement of its success.
|
# ? Jan 14, 2016 22:38 |

Isn't that kind of the point of industry awards though? I mean if you were nominating movies based on gross and general audience reaction, the only current nominee that would stay on the list for Best Picture would be The Martian. Oscars chat is fun to read, but I don't really know much about the process. Doesn't a lot of it depend on which movies the studios themselves push for? I don't think it was ever meant to be a popularity contest / reflection of the general moviegoing audience's tastes - looking at ticket sales already does that.

Codependent Poster posted:It would at least allow them to look like they somewhat care about what audiences like and watch. The Academy Awards are in theory supposed to be about quality instead of monetary success. Being popular and lucrative are not necessarily indicators of being artistically and culturally significant. Using your criteria, the greatest restaurant in the world would be McDonald's and Taylor Swift would be renowned as the one true genius of music. On the other hand, the Academy Awards are mostly a circle jerk anyway, so don't worry too much about it.

Yeah but the best picture nominated pictures were made by an evil Englishman, a filthy Mexican, a wild Irishman, another wilder Irishman, a savage Australian. Canadians are basically the off-brand version of America so they should in theory have it easier getting nominated than all of the above which are like proper foraners from spooky exotic places that have the metric system and by extension communism where people speak strange tongues incomprehensible to civilized men and hedonism and heathenry reign supreme.
