Isn't that kind of the point of industry awards though? I mean if you were nominating movies based on gross and general audience reaction, the only current nominee that would stay on the list for Best Picture would be The Martian. Oscars chat is fun to read, but I don't really know much about the process. Doesn't a lot of it depend on which movies the studios themselves push for? I don't think it was ever meant to be a popularity contest / reflection of the general moviegoing audience's tastes - looking at ticket sales already does that.
