It's hilarious that it took them this long to realize that The Bachelor franchise isn't some special harmless garbage. It's just garbage. Their defense of every action Rachel ever made was especially amusing.

"Peter, if you didn't want to propose why did you go on the bachelor?!"

"Rachel just came on her second reality show to find true love, she's so pure and true to herself!"

It seems really promising but waaaay too many characters for the first episode.

I think the biggest bummer was the tone in Griffin's voice when he talked about stuff he didn't get to in Amnesty. It sounds like he had a lot of plans that just did not happen due to the length or due to the characters blowing NPCs off.

I can only speak for myself, but in retrospect I think Amnesty made some mistakes at the start that basically made it a lost cause. Defining the characters so heavily (both in terms of depth and seriousness) at the very start was extremely off-putting, but it's not like they could slow down after that.

At the start of Balance, Travis had written a short novel about Magnus, which Griffin promptly (and correctly ignored) for like 30 episodes until they and the audience had gotten comfortable in the world.

In Amnesty they just dove into that poo poo from the start.

I've always found the McElroy 'abolish capitalism' to be mostly lip-service. I admit there's a bit of "Yet you participate in society, I am very intelligent," to my opinion, but... "Abolish capitalism Sponsored by Quip" is inherently complicated.

The Hero/Villain/Evil Teacher wrestler thing is by far the weakest part of Graduation. It feels like he tried super hard to make it not Hogwarts, but for me it just made it hard to relate to. I just don't have a lot of narrative references for "Wrestling Academy with wrestlers who are grouped in their 'Leading or support character' role, as well as their face or heel role." It doesn't mean that it's a lost cause, but it means that some audience members may feel like they don't have enough to hang on to.

Question for the thread: Every so often I’ll have a friend or colleague ask about podcasts I listen to and the conversation eventually goes into me explaining MBMBaM’s format. What would be the best bit to give someone as an example if they were interested in getting into it? (Not just the best bit or your favorite, I’m trying to get a good cross-section of the podcast as a whole).

Are they interested into getting into it, or do you want to introduce it to them?

If they're interested in getting into it, literally just search youtube for MBMBAM, or start listening to a random newer episode.

If you want to introduce it to them, the "best bit" thing is frankly the best way of going about it. And that's entirely personal to both you and what you know about the person you're talking to.

(All that being said, hot grapes is a great example of the meta-nature of the show, yahoo answers, silly speech patterns, the brother's dynamic with each other, and the fact that they laugh at their own jokes a lot.)

Justin's vasectomy story is the most baffling thing to me, and has created theories in my mind of West Virginia that are absolutely wild.

I was out of commission for like 2 days. Dude seemed to be recovering for like two weeks and from my memory of his description, they used like 40 year old methods. It made me think that West Virginia is literally multiple decades behind modern medicine standards.

yea I almost want a followup from the episode just to have Sydnee ask 'ok so what the gently caress'

The fact that we didn't get that is what made me assume that this is just the norm in West Virginia.

The fact that he went to some doctor that gave him the option to knock himself out (but not really) then appeared to really struggle with the procedure, then have two weeks of recovery?

Mine happened in a regular exam room, just me and the doctor, gave me some local anesthetic, a prescription for some pain meds ("but you probably won't need them,") and an ice pack and gauze to take home and took like 30 minutes in total.

Everyone should go to a real/modern doctor and get vasectomies. They rule.

They’re not level one, I think they’re at least 3+ since they’ve chosen subclasses

In today's episode Justin gets a +6 to perception and in the same scene mentions that they are level 1.

The start of the second episode Clint gets a +8 to a stealth check.

The level thing doesn't confuse me that much (but I am the weirdo who absolutely loved the leveling up section of Balance) but the +6 and +8 have me thinking I don't understand the game mechanics.
