Indie Gala has regularly been putting decent 5-10 year old games in their free section. Today they have the original Lovely Planet.

If it's on that page you should be able to get it. The indiegala interface is so crappy I was sure I couldn't get it either. But it turned up on the second page of the Showcase section in my user account...

I guess it did originally cost the purchase price of a box of cereal.

I've never played a hidden object game before and have no idea which to pick. Can anyone offer some guidance?

I know we used to have a few connoisseurs on the forums in the past, I haven't played enough to run into one that I thought was particularly good, but I tried it out the last time this deal came up.
When I ran some of the older games, they wouldn't properly scale up to modern resolutions. The top "Collector's Edition" titles that they push should at least have decent production values.

But you can also get a lot of other casual game types - Nancy Drew mysteries and Hero of the Kingdom games are on there.

Also, I haven't tried this myself, but if you are willing to give them a credit card # to join their Game Club thing, it looks like you can get a few extra free games after turning in all the codes - and then cancel it before the trial ends.

Big Fish does have a few normal games on there, but you might as well go hidden object / match-3 / time-management if you're getting something from them. I've never tried a modern time-management game, but anything that added more than 10 seconds of plot between the levels would be atrocious. I do like old-school time-management sometimes for sheer brainless clickery - Airport Mania and the original Build-A-Lot are good choices.

The games club box is checked by default, but it remembers that you've unchecked it.
But if you're already in and haven't cancelled yet, you might as well stay in for a bit and get the extra free games.

You also get extra punches for redeeming your codes on a Monday (including the codes you get from the game club).
You also can double-up on punches by redeeming both the Mac and PC versions of the games you get with the BIGFISHCASINO / MOBFREEAWAKENING / MOBFREERAVEN codes.

The nicest feature of Big Fish though, is that you get free one hour trials of all of their games that don't specifically have a demo version. So you can see if the old versions will actually run correctly on a modern OS / resolution. Not to mention that one hour of play is more than most of these games deserve.

What type of time management game? You've usually choosing between the Diner Dash ( serving customers ) style or the strategy-lite Roads of Rome / 12 Labors of Hercules type, plus a bunch of variations (Airport Mania, Build-a-Lot). If you're just looking for a nostalgia fix, there's a good chance that whatever game you used to play is still on there too.

I tried a few of the Hallmark-story GameHouse games that people were recommending. Not the most engaging gameplay - you mostly need to grind a bit to pass the higher skill levels (or there's some actual strategy to these games that I'm totally overlooking). Hotel Ever After was a recent one that worked well and didn't last too long. I'm currently playing Heart's Medicine: Doctors Oath but there's a zillion levels to go through and I doubt I'll finish.

Is that a repeatable free month (for as long as they keep offering that reward)?

Reminder that the Humble give-aways are not just a one-click affair. After you request the game, you need to actually redeem it to get the Steam key - the offer will expire after a while (maybe a month?).

Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Trilogy https://register.ubisoft.com/ac-chronicles/en-GB is free on uplay (ubisoft)

and it only qualifies on a technicality, but the best deal in PC gaming is back yet again, 3 months of Xbox Gamepass PC for 1$ https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass#join. You can get a 4th month for a dollar if you're eligible for the xbox ultimate 1$ trial (but don't waste the ultimate 1$ trial if you're planning on doing an xbox gold conversion).

The curse of following free games is finding out that the $1 games you bought in your naive youth (and never played) are now free.
