I've come out of lurking to recommend this cool manga that doesn't get talked about enough in ADTRW.

Golden Kamui is a manga that takes place in Meiji Era Hokkaido just after the close of the Russo-Japanese War. It stars this guy:

Sugimoto, a veteran of the war. He's so good at not dying that he got the nickname of "the Immortal." His whole goal is to get a bunch of gold to save the woman he loves from an illness. After coming to Hokkaido in a failed attempt to capitalize on a gold rush, he ends up hearing about a huge stash of gold some crazy criminal stashed before he was caught and locked up. The "treasure map" to the gold was then tattooed on the backs of all his fellow inmates before they staged an escape.

Sugimoto teams up an Ainu girl:

Asirpa, who's after the gold because that crazy criminal who stashed it stole it from her father and killed him in the process.

Together, the two of them are on a race against time against the other criminals along with a local division of the Japanese Army and the occasional angry bear! This manga is a great blend of interesting Ainu culture, exciting action, and comedy all in a package that comes off a lot like a Japanese take on a Western movie. And Sugimoto punches a bear!

And eats an otter!

And has many other adventures besides! This is a really good manga that you should read if you're interested in the Ainu culture, food, Meiji era Japan, or the pitiless brutality of nature.

I really like the action so far in this manga. It's always clear and obvious what's happening, and the fight scenes are quick, efficient, and brutal.
Plus I like how the author uses double page spreads for important action bits, like Sugimoto's drop kick or a man throwing a prostitute like a frisbee.

I want a prequel staring Nihei.

I haven't read it, but apparently he uses the exact same character design and the name "Nihei" for a hockey coach in his previous manga Supinamarada! :

The author even used Nihei's face for his autograph, so hopefully Noda just loves drawing this dude and will use him in all his mangas forever.

Besides, Nikaidou is always calling him "sir". Am I missing something here? Maybe Nikaidou is Ogata's bitch, pure and simple?

I think you might be mixing up soldiers (unless there was a typo somewhere?) It can get pretty confusing with all the different soldiers. They don't mention his rank much, but Nikaidou is a Private First Class (the same rank as Tanigaki):

The Corporal they keep talking about is Tamai, a different guy:

He's the mustache man that got his face flipped open by a bear way back in volume 2.

the yojimbo arc was amazing and this manga deserves more praise

I bet it would get more attention with an anime, but I'm not sure how likely that is to happen. It's not like they have a lot of fluent Ainu speakers to do the voice acting, and there's a decent chunk of Ainu dialogue. Sure, they get non-native speakers to do an awful job speaking English all the time, but it might be a different thing when it's the language of a native ethnic group that could potentially get upset about it. It's hard to say, maybe I'm completely wrong and it's just a matter of time!

And yeah, the Yojimbo arc is great. I've never seen the movie before and I watched it after I started the arc, and it's amazing just how packed full of little references and homages the whole arc is. You can tell how much of a passion project this is for Noda.

Yeah, that's all true. But if they want to be authentic and given that there are barely any fluent speakers of Ainu at all nowadays except for the elderly, I would be 100% fine with using an 80 year old woman for Asirpa's voice, though!

In other GK news, it looks like they're opening up a "Golden Kamuy restaurant" for one day only in Shibuya in September.

http://www.cinra.net/news/20160812-goldenkamui (link is in Japanese, but it has cool pictures)

They've got rabbit citatap stew, deer and bear meat, and komochi konbu, but it looks like raw brains didn't make the menu. If anybody is gonna be in Tokyo on 9/22 and has a lot of confidence in their ability to get a reservation, you should go for it!

So I though Asirpa's dad was an Amur Valley Ainu? What is he? Russian? Tungusic? I'm confused now...

(Gonna drop the spoiler tags since I'm just speculating) I think he's from an Amur Valley ethnic group that is similar to the Ainu but not the same. Kiroranke mentions that they lived a lifestyle "not so different from the Ainu," but Asirpa's dad seemed to need to learn about the Ainu culture from his wife so I don't think they were actually Ainu. The manga leaves the details of what ethnic group he's from pretty vague aside from the fact that it was in the Amur River area. I assume that's because either A) it's some sort of revelation later or B) Noda just sort of made up a group for plot purposes that vaguely fits the time and place but doesn't directly correspond to any historical group.

I feel like if Noda had some sort of anti-gay agenda, he would make his gay characters a lot more stereotypical and a lot less likeable. I mean, everyone loves Edogai and the yakuza couple avoid falling into a lot of different common tropes about gay people that tend to show up in manga. All of those characters are charming and when they die it's in a cool, often heroic way. So if Noda is trying to say something by killing them off, I don't really know what it's supposed to be.

If I had to say the one agenda I feel exists in this manga, it would be this: Noda really likes boners.

No, Ainu women got tattoos before they were married. They got them first at around Asirpa's age (12-13), and then the tattoos were made bigger at 15-16. Getting a tattoo was considered a requirement for a woman to be married. I believe the tattoo was expanded on again after marriage (they mentioned that the grandma has a big tattoo because she was married to an important man), but women definitely got tattoos in Ainu culture before marriage. I'd say that Inkarmat definitely has a mouth tattoo as well, although it's not easy to tell.

This is probably the clearest picture of it that I could find, at the end of chapter 115. You can see how it goes out past where lipstick would go, towards the cheeks:

So it looks like Viz did a DMCA takedown and asked batoto to remove every single chapter of Golden Kamuy. That's a real shame, since I prefer uploading on batoto since it lets us reupload and fix errors if we need to. I thought Viz wasn't quite as quick to remove series as, say, Yen Press, but I guess I was wrong.

But more interestingly, I was looking at pictures of the Viz version of volume 2 on twitter and I noticed something. It seems an awful lot like they just, well, plagiarized our scanlation.

Sure, there's only so many ways that you can write something, but some of that stuff is almost word for word what we had. Also, what's most suspicious to me is that the Ainu is exactly the same. Given that a written Ainu language was a late invention that didn't always have a consistent romanization, there's a lot of room for different ways to write out Ainu words. I'm the one that transcribed all the Ainu words, and I used a lot of guesswork when it came to the spelling of some confusing words and how I decided to split words up in a sentence. So the fact that they wrote the same thing would be pretty surprising if their work was totally original. I can't say for 100% sure, but it sure seems like they just copied what we had, changed a few words, and then got paid for it. Not that we can do poo poo about it as a Highly Illegal Scanlating Group, though!
