Has a demo.

They have another game with mixed reviews like Rubbish and Stick to ETS.

what?
175 square kilometers is an area roughly the size of Aruba, a bit less than one and a half times the size of Disney World. In open world video game terms it's a bit more than double the area of GTA V. That does not sound like it'd be able to support enough activity to be particularly interesting, especially since the developer commends indicate there's no time or space compression in the map. You're basically just transporting things around a large metro area.

The Christmas event is live, same as last year where you make deliveries to or from the magical winter wonderland map:

Hedgehog Pie posted:

The Christmas event is active and it's a bit more involved than last year's!

There are five unique depots in WINTERLAND, which is a special map made for the event. You have to deliver special Christmas goodies to or from each one, then complete 15 deliveries to or from them in total. You enter/leave Winterland by accepting one of the event's jobs and then driving to a portal marked by a swirl/snowflake. Most of these seem to be outside towns/cities at service stations on the main map. The community goal is similar to last year's, where each city has a certain amount of deliveries to reach, visible on the map when picking a job.

Winterland is, naturally, snowy, complete with its own driving physics, so you move much slower than normal and are liable to slip around a bit. It's cute and it looks great, possibly a test run for implementing seasonal weather in the main games? That said, there's no traffic and it's fairly small, so I won't be in a rush to complete my personal goal. Also, getting up to the mountain resort is a real slog.

The wonderland map is changed up somewhat, and this time around some deliveries will randomly task you with picking up additional pieces of lost cargo along the way.

I have decided that I would like to try and get into American Truck Simulator, after not having played ETS2 in over a decade. I'm familiar with the basics, having played ETS up to being able to establish my own company and manage one other driver, but I'm specifically looking to learn how to drive in manual transmission, as inspired by this video from youtuber Squirrel ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcdxz5JNXe4

... where the very act of driving requires careful management of engine RPM.

Is there anything I could read, or watch, that discusses the correct way to do this? something like an Airplane Flying Handbook, but for trucks? a Truck Driving Handbook?

Huh, okay...
You mean like actually driving a manual truck with a range/split gearbox?

e: here's a video of how to do it in a Scania, I imagine it'll be pretty much this in an American truck.

e2: This guy actually explains what he's doing in a Euro Volvo. Same principles, different shift pattern.

More like, if I set the game to manual transmission instead of the lowest/easiest difficulty, how should I be driving? When do I shift up, down?

I know how to drive irl, but even my car is an automatic, so my only point of reference is "put it on L when going up a steep uphill and don't go past 20 kph when set to that"

Nenonen
Oct 22, 2009

There's a range of RPM that is efficient, often it's marked in green in the tachometer and written in the manual. Or you can just listen to how the engine purrs, if the sound gets very low then you have low rpm and need to shift down. When going uphill you may want to shift down too, to avoid stalling.

Also trucks have lots of gears and it's not always necessary to go through them systematically. Like in all the trucks that I've driven, #1 is just for crawling in a parking area. In traffic I would start from #2.

FoulWeatherFriend
Apr 10, 2006

Huh, okay...
Oh.

You have a wheel and shifter, yes? Trying to do the manual shifting on the keyboard is literal torture.

Try to keep the revs in the power band when you need power and where the engine is most fuel efficient when you don't really need power. In the real life manual trucks I've driven I've generally tried to keep the revs to ~1100 when not needing power, and tried to not exceed ~1550 when I need power.

You should be in the gear you need when for instance approaching a hill, before you hit the incline. Same for going down a hill, you should already be shifted down when you hit the decline. If you try to shift when you're already slowing down going uphill you're in for a bad time, downhill is a bit easier to handle but you're still gonna wanna be in the correct gear so that you can just use your aux brakes instead of your actual brakes.

Range/split gearboxes have a low range, typically gears 1-4, and a high range, typically 5-8, and a high/low split for every gear. Depending on the specific gearbox, you might have different ranges and splits available. In European trucks it's most common to have the ranges be 1-3/4-6 with splits on every gear, but from what I've seen in American trucks it's not uncommon to have the low range not have splits on the gears.

Poil
Mar 17, 2007

You can just use the gearbox as an improvised speed limiter and glue the pedal to the metal. It's not real life so there aren't any problems with it.

Shift up when the revs get very high and you want more speed. Shift down when you feel the truck losing power (or want to slow down). Sure you can do it more optimized but that's good enough. Try to avoid shifting from a high gear to a low one without first slowing down.

Has there been any update on when the new DLC states are going to come out? I've only recently gotten into American Truck Simulator and I'm not familiar with the development cycle for the state maps. Missouri and Louisiana both seem like they're going to be really fun to play (sorry Iowa).

When changing gears manually using a shifter in ATS you really want to learn how to float gears (change gear without using the clutch). It makes driving so much smoother and easier, and you feel really cool doing it.
Since the truck gearbox is unsynchronized you are supposed to double clutch it, clutch into neutral and then clutch into gear, you can bypass this by switching gears really slow but by floating the gears you can do really quick up/down shifts.

You need to set the advanced shifting option is the settings and also the setting for fast split from "never" to "clutch" "throttle" or "both". It's easiest with "both".

As a rule of thumb most "normal" stock 18 speed gearboxes have a difference of 200rpm between gears witch makes it super easy to float gears. When you are at 1500 rpm you just release the throttle, yank the shifter into neutral, wait for the RPM to drop to 1300 and then push the stick into next gear and then stomp on the throttle. When doing a downshift you need to raise the rpm by 200 which makes it a bit more complicated. Release throttle, yank the stick into neutral, lightly touch the throttle to increase rpm by 200, release throttle, push stick into lower gear. If you mis-time the shift you will hear the gears grind, might be hard to hear if you are not using headphones.

This is how you do it with a range splitter, I think it is different if you use an eaton-fuller layout (instead of gear 1-18 you have stuff like 1L, 1H, 2L, 2H etc.), you need some keybinds and stuff in that case I think, with a range splitter it is easy. It takes some time to learn how to do it properly but once you get it down you'll be cruising like a pro.

Missouri DLC is out, with the requisite community event for delivering to or from every city in the state.

And the newest announced truck sim DLC is... not trucks? Not semis, at least. It's licensed cars and pickups, like the F-150 and the 1969 Dodge Charger.

There are a few UI screenshots towards the bottom of the post that show lists of information booths to discover and postcards to collect as well, so it seems like that's at least one of the paths they're developing. There's also a video, but it's a long one and I haven't gotten through the intro so I have no idea if it has any more information:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7r5DwPsNr0

I'm also hoping they also add some smaller truck hauling missions. There are a few pretty obvious ways to go there, RVs, hotshot, horse trailers, etc.

It's also interesting that they're showing off a detailed interior model for the Crown Vic, implying that we could be either driving one or in the back seat of one.
