It is a large percentage that, but the USA is kinda huge in terms of landmass and mostly sparsely populated west of the Mississippi, so there are sound (if really unfortunate) reasons for most of the country having poo poo all for internet infrastructure

You'd really need state-limited ISPs TBH. A few for a handful of states to compete between each other, as opposed to just a few big country ones which can pick and choose which parts of the country come into the modern civilized world, and which are stuck in the sub 1MB/s dark ages.

There used to be multiple regional telecoms in the United States, but guess what actually happens when there's unregulated competition

Yeah, basically the free market in the US translates to 'pro-Business' politicians bending over backwards to support their lobbyists and prevent any competition from emerging.

Hey I live in Kansas and the thing all you guys forget is the word "tried". The reason you must say this is because even in the demons and dragons big corp republican hellhole folks seem to think this place is, that proposal got laughed out of the state senate because the system isn't perfect but it generally works. It's like you are offended that someone even thought of a thing, which is way more oppressive than anything that's been proposed.

So thanks for being insensitive clods but I'd rather talk about OpenXCOM and all the cool stuff that project is doing and also it is 110% ok to talk about in this thread because it is XCOM and XCOM is good.

Unfortunately, the advantages of the free market only manifest in the absence of significant market power. It's difficult for new providers to enter the broadband market, and our regulators (FCC) haven't been doing a lot lately to fix that problem. As such, the broadband market in the US is characterized by regional duopolies, and under those conditions there's little incentive for existing companies to provide quality service. Aside from giving a poo poo. And they don't.

Metal Saga. It is part of a really strange line of JRPGs focused on driving tanks around a post apocalyptic world. Really great but really strange game. Worth checking out if you like games where you hunt wild buses around the desert to capture and strap rocket pods to.

On one of the failed runs it was the most intense mission I've ever played. I had two guys go down in the first encounter but managed to stabilize them both before they bled out. I finished the rest of the mission with a support and an assault, only to have the NPC get sniped two tiles from the extraction zone by the thin man who spawns on the other side of the map. Ok, so I failed the mission, but I'm still bringing everyone home alive! I get my remaining two soldiers into the zone, only to have the game tell me that if I leave now the guys still on the battlefield are toast. So, I go and kill the remaining thin man and end the mission that way. The stats screen comes up - zero soldiers lost. Hell yes.

In the original you could huck peoples bodies around.

Whenever I captured an alien I'd drag it back to the skyranger where a rookie with a shock prod could smack it any time they woke up (Because they could wake up in the original).

X-Com remastered would be something I'd totally play. The modern games have the occasional "And then catastrophy struck" moments. But really nothing compares to kicking the skyranger door open, and an etherial that's right across the street immediately panics the blaster bomb toting dude into nuking the entire squad.

Why would you name a game "metal saga" when there's things like "metal gear solid", "metal slug", "full metal jacket","full metal alchemist"... it just seems confusing. Games have terrible names.

Hopefully, in XCOM2 the condition to researching alien corpses could be: "You have to have one soldier pick it up and lug it around, or take it back to the Skyranger, in order to get the option of dissecting it back at base." Or at least, that would be a cool thing to mod in for the realism folks anywho.

It didn't bother me too much. I always left a guy in the skyranger so I could at least get that back when poo poo went horribly wrong. So he'd get prisoner duty, and more often than not he was also on blaster bomb duty since "Why the gently caress not?"

There's a lot of stuff I miss from the original. Designing my bases so they'd be kill zones for anyone attacking was a big one.

3 Hangars at the top connected to the rest of the base via the elevator. You can just put four dudes in the next set of rooms south of the elevators on overwatch. It was basically a plasma weapon/grenade/etc farm.

What I don't miss is having to man/arm all my auxiliary basis instead of just having one really good base. You needed at least 4-6 dudes on "Defense Duty" for any interceptor bases you had setup or they'd get eaten.
