Yeah I'm making my peace right now with either camping out at work to leech campus wifi to make the download more bearable, or just not playing for a couple days. Oh well! Just gives me more time to plan out my Character Pool of stupid pop culture references. I can't wait for the arrival of a standard voice pack modding tool.

:holy::holy::holy: HELLO DO YOU HAVE A MOMENT TO TALK ABOUT BEING INVISIBLE :holy::holy::holy:

Being invisible is great because ENEMIES CAN'T SEE YOU. This allows you to move around the map like you're a loving spirit haunting ADVENT City Centers like some rear end in a top hat from a Supernatural episode.

Just like being a malevolent piece of poo poo ghost, Phantom lets you gently caress with ADVENT constantly in a completely unfair fashion by always starting fights with the initiative.

Remember those times you blundered into an enemy patrol because you didn't know they were there, and then they got to shoot at you and poo poo? gently caress THAT.

Just be a MOTHERFUCKING ETHEREAL WISP instead and spot them first, every time! Use this valuable recon to then turn your enemies into ghosts! Unlike you, they will be poo poo ghosts that are good at nothing.

What's that, you're on a non-timed mission now? HA HA HA HA HA. Spot enemies with your Phantom and then set up perfect uncounterable Overwatch traps with the rest of your corporeal, non-ghost squadmates. These traps can take time to set up, but who gives a poo poo? You're a ghost. Time and mercy are equally meaningless to you.

So until someone mods in a goddamn ADVENT Priest unit to exorcise your bullshit, BE A PHANTOM. Because the only thing more hillarious than being permanently invisible is the endless hillarious Overwatch traps you'll pull on enemies who have absoloutely no idea how to protect themselves from the spirit world.

Speaking of extracting, the first time I had to extract a VIP I was panicking because I didn't have any stun weapons (I was expecting an Arc Thrower equivalent somewhere). I love that they went with "no fancy gadgets, just hit them in the noggin really hard".

My first VIP extract was in broad daylight in Tijuana. loving blitzed them flawlessly. Making the cartels proud. :ese: The only thing that was even close to a surprise was that I assumed the KO action would include grabbing the post-buttstroke body and was surprised when it didn't, but I also had the entire building locked down at that point, so it wasn't even a problem to just haul 'me out next turn.

I'm really regretting taking Haywire Protocol on my Specialists because of this. All of my hacking rolls this campaign have been abysmal. Every time there's a special bonus on a mission-critical hack, I've rolled just under it. Every time. It's remarkably consistent. As a result, my hackers are really underpowered, and I can't successfully hack anything at all that isn't a 100% chance. So I should probably just retrain to Revival Protocol and pretend hacking isn't a mechanic for this campaign.

I made sure to spec a Specialist full healbot before doing any combat hacker, in large part because of just how useful Revival Protocol actually is. If it was just bleedout it'd be pointless, but with all the additional forms of incapacitation introduced, Revival Protocol is a real lifesaver, whether its because a Stun Lancer ran your overwatch gauntlet and got too lucky, or because you need that rookie unpanicked right drat now. Haywire isn't useless, but it's more situational than even just the one-shot 'oh poo poo' button that is Revival.

I'm not a huge fan personally. I wish they'd only uncloak if 1: You got really close to them or 2: There were no other enemies left.

As it is they'll sometimes uncloak if they can feasibly make it to you and attack in one turn, which means you need to basically never be anywhere near a civvie if you're in the middle of another firefight.

My first time with a Faceless involved it undisguising at then end of the enemy's second turn and jogging over to paste a rookie. That's also about the only time I've really felt threatened by a Faceless; as your troops rank up and get more health, the damage a Faceless can do becomes less of a one-hit kind of threat, and they're such easy targets that a single round of even casual focus fire will almost always bring them down before they can make a second swipe. The biggest bullshit thing with them is that the rules for when they'll show themselves outside of you activating them and the map being cleared aren't really transparent, and even that stops being too big a problem as you keep progressing. They're kind of like EU chrysallids I'd say: a threat when they first appear because you do have a lot of tools or sheer survivability, but pretty quickly surpassed especially if you can play smart.

Unless they ramp up to God-tier by the end of the game they're kind of just slowing me down. I wonder how much time limit complaints are around setting things up for the sniper? I used to do that a lot in EU.

Yeah, Gunslingers are really just on another tier of general usage compared to purestrain snipers, purely because they can still do squadsight sniping when you need or have the time to do that, but they also can contribute effectively while also keeping pace with the rest of the squad's advancing on time sensitive runs, which makes them a better idea to spec into with at minimum your first sharpshooter, so they don't just languish in the armory whenever you get something with a turn limit.

Harrow posted:

I wish they'd done with pistols what they did with shotguns in XCOM: EU. When all other weapons to go plasma, shotguns become "Alloy Cannons" and just pump enemies full of alien alloys with a huge, satisfying bang. An Alloy Hand Cannon would be so much more satisfying than a plasma pistol.
