It's worth remembering that when they first revealed the bureau it was just straight up called XCOM, and when some executive/marketer was asked why they were making a shooter out of that IP, they basically said that no one wanted to play turn-based games. I'm not sure if Enemy Unknown had even been greenlit at that time.

Were there any successful turn based games around then? I know 4X games like Civ were doing well, but I don't remember any big hits with something like XCOM.

They took a bunch of notes from LW. They took some notes from watching people obsessively play the game and how they broke EU/EW (same as how they added stuff like Meld in EW after seeing the Beaglerush style of ultra-conservative play). I think they even took some notes from the xcom boardgame. The one-use projects that give you a single reward or piece of equipment feel like burning a research card for an ability in that.

I liked what EW did to encourage you to play the game more aggressively. I don't like timed missions; I don't even know if that discourages missions from taking longer (in clock time, not turns.) Confounding Light always took me a bit longer because the penalties for getting it wrong were severe so it ended up taking even longer having to plan soldier loadout/positioning/etc. exactly right. I don't even liked timed segments in platforms or whatever. So yeah, timed missions make me :smith:

Could of just written GIT GUD SCRUB on that game over screen Jake.

Also I was chain crashing too a no-signal monitor screen and a sound loop until I lowered my graphics settings so that might help someone else.

To be fair, what I've played so far was mostly fun, but of the three missions (except the very first one):
* timed "get to the thing on a truck before it blows up", 8 turns, 2 squads
* timed "get to the thing in a church before the aliens shoot it for reasons", ? turns (they kept shooting it every turn, I'm guessing also 8), 2 squads + reinforcements
* timed "rescue the guy", 11 turns before forced retreat, with the wacky LOS like the bare foot triggering overwatch, which hurts (I think someone was down to around half health and that was "gravely wounded."), 2 squads + reinforcements

Performance is pretty lovely, I wonder if they are using TressFX (the hair does look pretty good.) You also can't zoom out very far; I was trying to get a soldier in a position to shoot a mind-controlling pectoid, but literally could not put both on the screen at once (and you need to see the pectoid to see if it has the crosshairs meaning you can shoot.)

I'm playing on babby (and beat EW on Classic and LW on Normal), I wouldn't say the game is hard, but either I rolled bad dice and picked all timed missions, or the game is full of them. The procedurally generated maps, LOS bugs, and bizarre overwatch triggers make this something that I'd want to wait for the patch to fix. If you haven't bought yet and have Amazon Prime, they're going to have the base game or deluxe one on sale for another 2 weeks at 20% off, and I'd just wait to see if Jake fixes his game, because that last mission was full of bullshit.

Also the trick to timed missions is to not kill everything, do the objective and then worry about aliens or just get the gently caress out, you don't even get corpses from evac missions.

The problem is for the three missions I mentioned:
* if you just "did the objective" on the first, you'd have gotten flanked by Advent
* the only way to "do the objective" in the second was to kill all the aliens because they were shooting the thingamabob
* the third was a civilian escort mission with basically no cover from the escort's location to evac outside of a few explosive cars and a bus shelter. Actually there were a few pillars but Advent was taking that cover already so

As someone playing on babby difficulty, there is still a huge amount of :xcom: you have to deal with. Missing 80%+ flank shots will happen quite regularly and your rookies still panic at the slightest wet fart. It feels a lot like Normal from EU/EW which kind of defeats the purpose of having an easy difficulty. Sometimes people just want to bumrush the story first with a squad of super powered veterans. :(

I was being a bit sarcastic, sorry. started on Easy to get a handle on the new mechanics, but it doesn't feel that way. Mission timers should at least have been relaxed. The LOS problems I had in the last mission (activations/overwatches through solid walls), though, that's just not excusable when one of your selling points is "we fixed the LOS stuff from EU." Also not a big fan of mind control that early into the game - it's one thing when the enemy can deny you one member of a six person squad (which is what you should have had in EU by the time you stormed the alien base and met your first Sectoid Commander), it's another thing to get it in the third mission when you only have four three soldiers.

I wonder what kind of hot garbage this game was back in November.

The developers should encourage certain playstyles using rewards and incentives, rather than punishments. Positive reinforcement > negative reinforcement.

You can, and should, just buy it on Steam and play it for ~two hours (which should be 2-3 missions) to see if you are fine with the timer. I didn't like them but I'm glad I tried the game out at least.

I'm really, really tempted by XCOM2, but I always played the first game very slowly and cautiously. Some of the things I've read about the new game's turn limits has me concerned that I'm just going to suck horribly/not enjoy it as much. Am I wrong?

There are mods now that let you disable or dial back the turn limits. Note I haven't tried it.

Limits are very hit and miss - on easy my third mission was a huge map and I made the evac zone on the last turn. I was watching Llama's stream yesterday and he had a similar mission (go into building, knock out person, take them to evac) and ended up with a wall of enemies between him and the evac point including a MEC, (I think) two codices and a bunch of Advent with something like three turns left.

I'm still surprised that even though turn limits are the #1 complaint (judging from Steam reviews and all the complaining in the Steam forums/Reddit) they didn't give the player more relaxed limits on easier difficulties. Going from 8 to 12 turns still makes overwatch camping not a good strategy and forces the player to get going, and helps paper over any lovely procedural maps.

You can always buy, play for two hours (which gave me the two tutorial missions and two regular, short missions) and then return if you don't like. I'm glad I did, but even if the turn limits weren't a thing, I was hit by a bunch of BS LOS issues in my last mission and probably would have returned it anyway.
