One of the Porsches reported oil on track at that corner shortly before Gavin went off.

That, combined with the fact the track was "clean" because of the downpours Saturday made for lots of mowing.

Not really; it's a subclass just like the various hybrid levels are...in other words, the same, but somehow different.

So I was doing some reading, and unless I'm missing something huge, there is nothing that expressly forbids a manufacturer from running a gas-electric hybrid in LM-GTE; the rules in fact state that "If a mean of propulsion different that an internal combustion engine is considered, it needs to be used directly from serial car without any modification", which means a BMW i8 GTE could theoretically be allowed within the rules.

They would have to do away with the front axle electric drive (probably with a waiver) and up the gas engine output to 300-350 horsepower, but other than that it should be entirely possible to enter the i8 as BMW's new GTE entry; no need to try and graft in a V8 or anything.

Honestly, I see a NSX GTE before an i8 GTE. They're already using a non-hybrid NSX for GT3.

It's sort of my home track, but I'm always surprised to see RA well liked. I always thought it was sort of a "second rate" track.

Then again, that may have been due to NASCAR largely snubbing it with no Sprint Cup races there.

I view thew current P2 offerings similar to NASCAR, really. You get one engine and a choice of chassis and (slightly) different bodies.

DPi feels more like Indy Car. You get a chassis, stick your own "aerokit" on it and use your own engine.

harperdc posted:

And fingers very crossed that this AMG Mercedes rumored project comes true as well. They may be based on the P2s, but it would be good racing to have four factories involved.

I can see AMG Mercedes trying LMP1 over DPi, but having Merc in DPi would be very welcome. They already have massive success with a hybrid formula in F1, though I don't know how much ACO would approve of them dropping in pretty much the same powertrain into an LMP1 car.

I can't see anyone paying for both a top flight F1 and LMP1 program

If most of the cost for a LMP1 program is the drivetrain, Mercedes is already there. They'd have to modify the hybrid part to comply with the LMP1 regulations (namely use of it in the pits, different charge/discharge rates from F1 to LMP1), but the groundwork is already there.

AMG was/is interested in IMSA because the US is far and away the largest market for AMG products. They also like the direct marketing to their owners, through the 'fan villages' and such that IMSA does. None of that is accomplished in P1 for 50x the price.

Fair point

http://www.motorsport.com/wec/news/wec-abandons-2018-lmp1-rules-overhaul-851962/
Because next year is going to be Porsche 1-2, Toyota 3-4, and Rebellion beating ByKolles in an LMP2 car. Though the Russians are going to enter another privateer LMP1 car for 2018.

(Also FIA needs to get over its complex about having F1 being the fastest circuit track cars in the world)

make prototypes actual realistic prototypes again

Here's my question, and it's sort of an impression I get from others, not just you (nor do I mean this as a slight against you at all). With the exception of open wheel as a whole and funny car, why do we have to have cars that are based in reality for ever series? I mean sure, it translates well for the makers saying "BUY THIS CAR, IT WON LE MANS!" but what's wrong with prototypes looking futuristic?
