Kroger has a dairy plant in my city that is unionized, and I know several people with high paying jobs with great benefits that work there, so really there's no reason to shop elsewhere locally unless you're looking for something very specific and can't find it there imo.

Unions are literally why Wal-Mart ships their meat in prepackaged. I worked in the meat department, and several of the old-time employees remembered the plans to bring in a butcher counter, but they were quickly tabled nationwide.

Alberstons used to be everywhere here in south florida, but left years ago and I really miss their fried chicken. Everyone here worships Publix in a cult like manner but I don't see what's so great about them and they're overpriced. Albertsons also had movie/game rental inside the stores which was cool. Somehow we still have a few Winn-Dixies still kicking around but no more Albertsons

I feel like a butchers union is more for protection for the bosses. If the butchers have no defense to being hosed over by their bosses they’ll just become thousands of mobile guillotines.

Kroger as a whole is unionized, they belong to the United Food & Commercial Workers. I spent a summer doing political canvassing for the AFL-CIO, and they always took us to whatever Kroger was nearby for lunch. One day I noticed the sticker on the door and had a "oooohhh" moment on why they always picked Kroger (aside from the fact that there's one every 3 feet in this area, and they have some bangin' pre-made food options).

Yeah, Publix has pretty good pay, and if you can make to a managerial level, you can easily make 6 figures + stock options. I dunno, I always liked shopping at them because they were friendly and generally seemed cleaner and more well kept that then other places.

It is still known as the dirty Kroger because Louisville is one of those places where rebranding is essentially impossible. Funny how that can work when you actually pay a decent wage. Yeah, it turns out that if your staff aren't constantly worrying about whether or not they can pay their rent this month - or eat tonight - they are much happier and more productive, which in turn makes your customers want to continue doing business with you. But it's cheaper to treat everyone like poo poo, especially when customers don't really have a choice who they do business with.
