Probably Pittsford Wegmans. It's the second most expensive (next to the one at Cornell). They have an attached restaurant at that one as well. That place is wild on sample day.

My friends do you remember the tale of Fresh 'n Easy stores?

UK grocer tries to expand into U.S. by offering fresh baked bread and store brand take n go foods (good poo poo like shepherd's pie and other goodies) but forgot to adjust to U.S. tastes (we hate watercress salad) and include U.S. brands. They failed terribly after a labor dispute and all closed.

Shame, since they regularly had a Clearance section of all the fresh food that was getting close to sell date. The rows of mashed potatoes after Thanksgiving was a sight to behold.

I loved Fresh 'n Easy while it lasted, and was sad to see it go. The location near me ended being abandoned for a few years (I saw at least two years worth of Spirit Halloweens in it). It's finally being turned into an Aldi.

Kroger has a dairy plant in my city that is unionized, and I know several people with high paying jobs with great benefits that work there, so really there's no reason to shop elsewhere locally unless you're looking for something very specific and can't find it there imo.

Unions are literally why Wal-Mart ships their meat in prepackaged.

I worked in the meat department, and several of the old-time employees remembered the plans to bring in a butcher counter, but they were quickly tabled nationwide.

Yeah, they don't make the headlines like teachers or auto workers, but unions got the butcher jobs on lockdown.

Weird how the people who regularly work with blades that effortlessly slice through flesh and bone want a strong union looking out for them. Well, as strong as any union in the US can be, at least.

Everyone here worships Publix in a cult like manner but I don't see what's so great about them and they're overpriced. Albertsons also had movie/game rental inside the stores which was cool. Somehow we still have a few Winn-Dixies still kicking around but no more Albertsons

Kroger as a whole is unionized, they belong to the United Food & Commercial Workers. I spent a summer doing political canvassing for the AFL-CIO, and they always took us to whatever Kroger was nearby for lunch. One day I noticed the sticker on the door and had a "oooohhh" moment on why they always picked Kroger (aside from the fact that there's one every 3 feet in this area, and they have some bangin' pre-made food options).

Yeah, Publix has pretty good pay, and if you can make to a managerial level, you can easily make 6 figures + stock options.

I dunno, I always liked shopping at them because they were friendly and generally seemed cleaner and more well kept that then other places.

We had a Bruno's in Atlanta. It was the nicest grocery store I'd ever been into up until that point. I have no idea what other locations were like, but here they were going for the upscale market that Publix would devour a couple of years later when it entered the market.

Price Chopper is owned by Golub, and they're rebranding some of their stores as "Market 32". It's family owned for now, but it seems like they might be selling it off. (My job deals with grocery stores on the East coast.)

Louisville has a Kroger on Lower Brownsboro which is universally known as the Dirty Kroger. When corporate in Cincinnati heard about this they spent millions renovating that location so that its now actually one of the nicer Krogers in the area. It is still known as the dirty Kroger because Louisville is one of those places where rebranding is essentially impossible. Supposedly it was such a big event that if you say Dirty Kroger to this day among the higher-ups at Cincinnati headquarters they immediately know the store you're referring to.

The Kroger near where I lived was called the Murder Kroger.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_Kroger

For whatever reason Krogers had a habit of getting distinctive names (Disco, Gay, Kosher, Murder). Maybe because it was the first real big grocery store chain in the city so instead of explaining where it was you just described it's most distinctive feature or customer base.

When I still lived there, Dillon's is pretty much the only purestrain grocery in all of Wichita. I mean you could go to Walmart or Target, but they're not grocery focused. I do miss being able to grab cheap Chinese food on the way out of a Dillon's.

Yeah, it turns out that if your staff aren't constantly worrying about whether or not they can pay their rent this month - or eat tonight - they are much happier and more productive, which in turn makes your customers want to continue doing business with you.

But it's cheaper to treat everyone like poo poo, especially when customers don't really have a choice who they do business with.
