Go back another few years and you've got that same issue with music. The media industry in general was incredibly anti-consumer in how it distributed content.

When digital music services finally came about, you'd have rules about which ones could be played on a computer, which ones could be loaded to your MP3 player, and if you were lucky you might have a a few that could get burnt to a CD. There was no standard until Apple forced it on the music industry. And even then the record labels tried to circumvent Apple by promoting competitor options. My favorite being Microsoft's own standard that they wouldn't even use on their own Zune player because it sucked so bad.

The system for all media is so much better now.

A friend of mine works for Microsoft and take a wild guess what kind of laptops they insist on using.

There has been plenty of talk that one of the reasons Trump went so hard after the NFL, aside from the obvious racism and jingoistic bullshit, is to set up for "an alternative to the NFL" via Vince's XFL.

The thing about Gamestop that always bothered me was that even for "new" games, they wouldn't be in shrink and they would pull a random disc or something from a drawer and my definition of new apparently did not match with theirs.

How have they gotten away with this for so long? I can’t think of another company that immediately removes all new product from the manufacturer’s packaging, then stores said packaging in one place and the product in another, and then there’s no guarantee the product hasn’t been used or there’s no missing documentation (or anything else) upon purchasing.

What? Were these actual brand new games, or ‘new’ releases that someone had already traded back in? I’d bought a ton of brand new games from GameStop over the years and they were always shrink wrapped and perfect in the packaging, same as they would be in any other store. Of course, they always tried to upsell the extra few dollars worth of insurance, “in case you got a bad disc” which I always turned down.

Honestly, for me, the only period where GameStop was really a better alternative to other chains was that window from around 2007 to about 2013 where I was in high school/college and the idea of getting games at the midnight launches and preorder bonuses still had some appearance of value. Going for the annual Madden or Call of Duty was a thing for a while, and other retailers either weren’t doing preorders and/or midnight releases when that was viewed as important, which it drat sure isn’t anymore. Now you can preorder basically everywhere, or just have Amazon deliver it if you actually want or need a physical copy or some bonus edition or whatever, so they totally lost that edge. I only shop at GameStop now if I get some kind of gift card.

I think over a decade I bought a total of like four used things from them, and one of those was a stupidly cheap replacement iPod.

GameStop will actually open brand new games, put the cases in one drawer, the discs in another, and sometimes even remove any literature that was enclosed. They got a bunch of poo poo a few years ago because they were removing the DLC codes from games that were advertised right on the case.

food court bailiff posted:

The confusion probably arises because they don't do it to every copy of a game, just the display copy - but they'll happily sell you the display copy, beat to poo poo from a million people handling it, almost certainly missing any inserts it once had - as new when it's the only copy left in the store.

And there are a lot of niche games that only get a handful of copies, so the rarer your game is the higher chance you're getting a popped display copy.

It's not just with display copies. I would hand them a display copy, which they put on the counter. Then they would go into one drawer to get a case, and then another drawer to get the disc in a clear plastic envelope. They'd take the disc out of the envelope, put it in the case, and then put it in the bag. The three or four times I remember this happening, it was a brand new game and I was not the only one in line that experienced it.

I thought they separated the discs from the cases for theft reasons. It’s super easy to slice open a jewel box and extract the CD. That’s not as big a deal for a $15 music or movie disc, but games are $60+ these days.

This makes sense for used games in which you're not expecting the case to be factory sealed. For new games, they're sent empty display copies for the theft purpose. Just a few dozen empty cases that are put on the shelf and then taken to the counter by a customer to exchange for, presumably, a brand new copy of the game that hasn't been hosed with.

Yeah, that was my experience. If I was going in for a brand new game, most often a preorder, I would go the counter and say I want Call of Madden 2K69 for Xbox Blah, and they’d unlock a drawer full of brand new, sealed copies of the game just like you would find at any other retailer.

This may differ by region or store. The "pre-opening" nonsense is what made me simply order games on Amazon if I want a physical copy or just download them.

its people buying the display copy and getting mad that its the display copy

So you're just ignoring the several people that have explained that it is not the display copy we're complaining about and that it's actually common practice at certain locations? I even said "It may vary by region or even store" because I can literally give you the addresses of GameStops near me that continue to do what we're talking about.

You pick up an empty display case from the shelf, it even says "DISPLAY ONLY" on it. You hand it to the employee who then puts it down on the counter. They then open one drawer to grab an actual brand new empty case, and then another drawer to grab a disc that's in a clear plastic envelope. They then take the disc from the one drawer and put it in the case from the other, complete the purchase, and then put it in a bag for you to take away, all while the DISPLAY ONLY case is still sitting on the counter.

I don't care if it's the display copy if that's all that's left. I do care that it's being done for seemingly no reason, unless it's to still pull the same poo poo that they got in trouble for years ago by removing DLC codes and other literature.
