When I was a cashier people would frequently swipe their card way before I'd finish up scanning all their poo poo. For some reason the machine let them swipe and enter their card details but it would cancel once I hit the total button on the register and they'd have to enter all their info again.

In other Canada news HMV Canada recently closed all their stores but decided to lease them out to Sunrise Records, an Ontario based music store that had 5 locations after many more were closed due to "increased rents".

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/sunrise-records-to-move-into-70-closing-hmv-locations-across-canada/article34138703/

Just recently the HMV near my apartment opened as a Sunrise Records so I decided to go check it out. It's the exact same except less toys and more music and worse branding. How they honestly expect to compete with Spotify and other streaming services I have no idea.

Does anyone buy $20 records anymore?

All the vape shops I walk by are filled with immaculate displays of multi coloured juice bottles with two bros hanging out on the couch in t he middle of a vacant store.

I guess they work like lounges rather than a retail shop? Sort of reminds me of comic book stores.

Also the PC section is literally Blizzard game cards and steam gift cards.

Speaking of Blizzard games, I love finding the random WoW expansions for $29.99 in random rear end grocery stores. Usually it's Cataclysm as well, not even the most recent one.

Hell even Mega Bloks was making GAMER bricks for a while, Warcraft, Call of Duty, Halo, all had their own line.

If they were smart they'd have a few "characters" that constantly defy the rules like kneeling, not singing the national anthem, standing on the flag, etc. But Vince would call them out during the game or give them punishments or somehow say "his hands are tied" and can't do anything, causing his viewer base to go into a frothing rage.

Just like wrestling they will have a few controversial actors who are hated by design, and the audience will eat this up.

Diet Poison posted:

Maybe semi-related, here in the Great Canadian Nowhere, inter-city public transit is disappearing entirely.
So since everything is far apart in this dump of a province, pretty much everybody except me and people too disabled/old to drive has a car. We had a subsidized bus service that'd take you from town to town (if you were too disabled/old/me to drive a car) which didn't make any profit because of low ridership, so our conservative government (that all these geezers voted for, I'm sure) axed it, saying that private companies would pick up the routes. You know, the ones that didn't make any money. And now Greyhound's pulling out of the west entirely.
This barely affects me, personally- I only ever used it once- but it's sure making it hard to live outside of the cities where life is more affordable and you used to be able to take the bus to go see your hip doctor every month or whatever. And in the city it's only a little better. I live in the biggest city in the province which is still barely over a quarter-million people, and really spread out. We'll never have good public transit because we'll never be big enough to have a monorail or subway. Nobody wants to ride the bus because the bus service sucks because nobody wants to ride the bus. Takes me all afternoon to go get groceries because the little store 5 minutes away on foot closed shortly after I moved to the city centre. Now I'm just getting off track. I guess my point is public transit in North America is sucky to nonexistent outside of the major cities? Small population centres are circling the drain?

This really fucks over the reserves too, which I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of their reasons for stopping the routes

Anytime you bring up a Greyhound bus in Canada, especially in the West, you'll get the Tim McLean story:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Tim_McLean

I blame the constant news cycle of airing tragedies as influencing the common person so much that they were afraid if they set foot on a bus they'd get their head chopped off

There was a Canadian Superstore (big grocery store chain) where I used to live that had a huge sign out front that said "GUARANTEED ALL REGISTER OPENED EVERY SATURDAY". Maybe it worked for them, I never went into the store on weekends because it's always way too busy.

Once grocery stores started doing online ordering and delivery for like $5 I stopped going in for my weekly ordering, the hassle of driving from downtown to a grocery store and then fighting for what I want in the store is just not worth it. So much easier to just pick from a list and have it arrive the next day.

From what I've seen the restaurant industry is down overall about 26%. That's obviously going to impact some more than others as a good number of restaurants simply aren't built for carryout. Meanwhile, grocery stores are up 26%.

Amazon's largely getting a pass during the pandemic, but I think they deserve a lot more scrutiny. Most of their talk about prioritizing medical supply shipments to hospitals is likely to cover for their system simply not being able to keep up otherwise. They've already shelved the plans they had to open up their delivery service to other companies due to capacity. I'd be a little worried in the future that they'd always prioritize their own shipments during busy months if they open it again in the future. And then there's the explosion of price gauging of everything from sanitizer to Nintendo Switches to webcams. From what I understand they've done little to prevent bots being used by resellers to buy up every last Switch and webcam the second they go up at normal prices.

Yeah are switch pro controllers normally $114 CAD?
