Declare bankruptcy

Don't have to pay legacy wages, any management pensions or retirement plans or contributions anymore, realize you can go mostly-online with your existing licenses and restructure from the ground-up hiring only part-time or for near minimum-wage.

"Huh, we don't have to dissolve."

Working for a credit card call center, there is always that old literal greybeard that gets called in once every three months to look at the COBOL mainframe stuff because something's broken. He's usually pretty happy and wearing something like a hawaiian shirt and cargo shorts, or a button-down with suspendere'd khakis and a corduroy jacket with elbow patches over top. But by god if Citicard isn't going to pay him $140k/year cumulative for the ability to have him on emergency calls when something goes poo poo with overdraft billing or whatever.

The K-Mart in Lewiston, Idaho is remaining open? It's a shanty of a town and a shanty of a store (I worked there for a very short period). Why?! They have a Walmart, Costco, and even a Shopko that is paradoxically thriving. With 28k people you can't support too much. And why are so many remaining open in general?

Funny, both Albertsons and WinCo started/are headquartered in Boise. I grew up in the north so was surprised as heck when I saw both of them after moving to AZ, thinking everything about my home state was an embarrassment

Every Albertsons I've been in (Idaho, Arizona) has self checkout. The one in my hometown got their self checkouts years before the local Walmart did, and it's a town of barely 30k people.

Of course, I haven't been in one in probably over a year.

Here, you have to work at least 20 hours a week to get food assistance. But if you make more than $350/week gross, you don't qualify for it. So if you work full time, or even 35 hours/week, you have to make less than $10/hour.

Yes! So, either you have to work a very, very narrow set of hours, or take a tipped service job.

Food assistance here is extremely regressive.

A large cheese pizza from Pizza hut cost $1.50 in 1958, which is $11.50 in today's dollars. That's about on par with the current price of anywhere between $8-12 depending on area and deals.

this forum post states:

quote:

Our original menu is from 1968... large 16" cheese and pep was 3.24 . We bought the pizzeria in 1983..our 10 year anniversary in 1993 we rolled back the prices to 1983 large 16" cheese and pep was 7.99. I believe we were selling them in 1981 for 7.29 when I was managing the place. Hope this helps.
Mike

An XL (16" pizza) at $3.24 in 1968 is the same as $23.21 today, and $7.99 from 1981 for the same XL cheese is the same as $21.87. Which is just about the same as straight menu price for the same things today. Of course there are always "coupons" and such, but it was the same back then, too. Discount prices merely had less visibility due to how easy they are to use and apply with online ordering in modern times.

What do all you Spotify-users do on planes? I can't imagine having the phone battery life for music across multiple long flights without obnoxious charging solutions, not to mention having no internet connection. My old iPod really does seem like the only functioning solution there, what am I missing?

In modern life I find it's good to have an Anker 26800 battery or similar in my backpack, so my phone and laptop (plain ol' Surface 3, non-pro) can stay charged throughout the day/multiple days. You can also usually have these on planes, as they're standalone batteries, they don't want them checked and actually prefer them as carry-on. drat thing will keep my phone going for two weeks if needed.

For Spotify, I just download the music I like. I also (for some crazy reason) maintain my actual mp3 file collection, that is synced automatically to Google Play Music (the free account lets you upload 50,000 or 100,000 songs or whatever for free, and it's your files, not songmatched ones), that I can also have saved to my device automatically.

If I really, really like something on Spotify, like the Celeste soundtrack, I'll buy it on Bandcamp and add it to the mp3 collection. Then it's automatically synced with my phone, and google account.

Extremely local whining, but I moved out of L-town in 2011 and hot drat they hadn't planned for the Walmart and Costco traffic. It needs, like, another entire bridge. That was my main beef, even through I lived basically downtown (4th avenue, 10th street area).
