Brother Morbos
Morbos observed the functioning wheel quietly. It's repairs probably had more to do with the ancient mechanisms hidden inside it than Morbos' ineffectual spit-n-shine but it was working again and that was the only thing that mattered.

The boom of shells impacting the church shook the plague marine from his daze once more. Morbos had seen enough battle to know that ground assault would follow soon.
-

Morbos revs his engine in preparation for the attack to begin. As the rest of the group opens fire, he slams the accelerator to full, sending the bike charging towards the enemies.

Initiative: 1d10+3 12

Hit & Run (Tome of Blood page 47) against one of the engines that hasn't exploded yet, then use the movement to get into melee with the sisters, assuming I understood the rules and charge ranges right.

Well, fuck. Really?
At the sight of the Seraphim, the one who would've been a part of their ranks gets a running start before launching into the sky, the exhaust from her pack trailing behind her like the tail of a comet. She blazes through the grouping of seraphim from below, surprising them as she slashes wildly with her daemonic blade, severing the fuel cable on one of the sister's packs; the woman shrieks as she soars off and explodes, leaving Khairi to juke about to keep an advantageous position. Beneath her, the terminator Iro had begun his lumbering charge before the engines even appeared over the horizon, and he lunges forward, slamming into one of the engines with all of his might. His lightning claws flash and spark as he strikes against the hull of the walker, smashing it inwards with his brute strength and cracking the armor in multiple directions.

In the church, Tabitha continues to take cover; she feels her own safety is best so she can mend the wounded. As Morbos revs up his bike and starts to peel off, he feels a weight on his shoulders and looks up; the Khorne berserker, Hotbrute, has launched himself to perch upon the Plague Marine during his charge, his chainsword held aloft. As the biker draws nearer, Hotbrute once more launches into the air, and the plague marine lashes his fist out, crushing the knee joint on the walker with one solid blow. Doomslobber lands on the walker, running forward a few paces before launching himself into the air once more, cackling manically. Cyrus takes aim and simply shoots one of the pilots of the penitent engines clean through the head, stopping the machine in its tracks; Blackstar does similar, smashing the pilot clean out of its restraints from the explosive force of his weapon.

Steknavich, not wanting to be outdone by a mere human, hurtles through the air after Khairi, his force sword blaring as he cleaves through the seraphim with practiced ease; some scatter to avoid him, but he is able to extend his blade's stroke psychically and send several spiraling to the ground. Below, Hotbrute ands in the midst of the Sisters of Battle and screams out for Khorne, spinning in place with his sword extended out, carving through the sisters with terrible ease, blood spattering against his armor and shards of bone plinking off of his helmet. The sorcerer hurls a bolt of scintillating colors that slams clean through the leg of one of the walkers, the vehicle falling forward and crushing its pilot, like the other machines that have fallen down.

Finally, the daemon engine screeches in an arcane, profane language and lumbers forward, its hands blazing with warpfire; it hurtles bolts of the unholy energy into the gathered sisters, all the while spraying its flamer every direction it can turn and firing its demolisher cannon into the midst of them. Once on the front lines, it begins picking the sisters up and hurling them like a petulant child with its toys, laughing darkly as it does. In the face of the horrific engine, the sisters falter and turn tail, screaming to regroup and get reinforcements better suited to handle the beast; many simply fall to the ground, dead from fright at the sight of the horrific engine. The seraphim above have yet to notice the engine, and only one engine continues to stand and function on the field.

"Yes! Run! Run you miserable weaklings! Your dead god cannot save you now!"

Almost as an afterthought, Iro reaches out and slides a claw into the hole he already punched in the teetering penitent engine, then whips it out to one side, tearing it apart and sending it toppling to the ground. From there, he glances up at the circling Seraphim and frowns. If they didn't land they were utterly out of his reach. Perhaps he'd see about finding some kind of ranged weapon to mount on his armor.

2 Standard Attacks vs 90 (50 +10 Best +30 Size +10 Standard Attack -10 Two-Weapon): 34 96

I'm not even gonna roll damage, it's dead no matter what. Even before bonus DoS I'm dealing a guaranteed 26 damage to 14 armor between the claw's Pen and Damage, 15 SB, and Proven. From here I guess I'll, uh, start pulling parts off the penitent engine to throw them at the Seraphim. Or I'll walk over to the pews and start chucking those, idk.

Hideous Resilience: Plague Marines have been known to walk unflinching through terrible fire and shrug off mighty blows
that would cleave other Space Marines in twain. As a Reaction, a Plague Marine may make a Difficult (–10) Toughness Test. If he

to release the swarms of bloat-flies, corpse-gases, and other vile contagions housed within his bloated frame. For the next 1d5+1 Rounds,
at the start of the Plague Marine’s Turn, each other character within 10 metres of the Plague Marine suffers a single hit for

Brother Morbos

Morbos banked hard to side and let his bike slide to halt. The daemon engine had done a fine job both sending the enemy squad running and cutting off the most direct route of chasing them. Not that it mattered much, chasing down retreating sisters through alleys would have been a tedious task with little reward, especially with the daemon attacking any remaining ones.

The shouts from others reminded him that there was still enemies in the air. While he could have left his bike behind and charged skywards, it didn't seem like worth the effort. The rest of the group should be more than capable of dealing with the threat. Besides, it would have meant having to leave the bike behind.

Murmuring quietly to himself, Morbos reached down and grabbed hold of a corpse left behind by the daemon engine. While the living were no issue, there was still plenty of work to be done with the dead.

Morbos is going to ignore the sky combat unless more enemies appear, they land near him or the group actually starts having problems with them. Meanwhile he'll slowly try to improve the fungi shui of the battlefield by dragging corses around.

John Dyne

Well, fuck. Really?
Two more Seraphim are disemboweled by Khairi's blade, sent spiraling to the ground as they no longer control their jump packs; below, Iro slams his claws into the front of the engine before him, ripping away the plating holding the pilot in place and tearing the felon free, killing both the machine and its pilot in one gruesome move. The airborne sisters finally realize what they are up against as the daemon engine shrieks upwards at them, and they begin to beat a hasty retreat, disengaging from the ex-Sororitas and the chaos marine, as black stormclouds swell overhead.

Unfortunately for the fleeing sisters, Callum's screaming incantations reach a crescendo, and the clouds overhead burst forth with tremendous peals of thunder and ridiculous amounts of lightning, a storm fueled entirely by the sundering of the warp nearby. Bolts of lightning in scintillating colors strike the sisters in turn, outright destroying them or rapidly mutating them into horrific chaos spawns at the worst; most fall from the sky, gurgling, before striking the ground dead.

Inside, Tabitha sees that Callum himself has been overwhelmed by the energies he has drawn forth, his body contorted as he hovers in the middle of the air, laughing manically as lightning strikes through the hole in the ceiling and bursts against the invisible barrier surrounding him, arcing off to strike pews and the walls around him. The sorcerer strains to lift his head, his eyes bulging and bloody, and a rictus grin on his face. He screams out in triumph, his lips barely able to move around his grinding teeth. "YESSSSSSSSSSS! I FEEL THE POWER! IT IS COMING TO ME NOW, AND IT IS MINE ALL MINE!!"

Outside, the air has taken a green tint to it as the unholy storm continues to rain destruction on the surrounding city. Out from above the clouds comes a Thunderhawk transport, flames trailing from it as the warp lightning repeatedly strikes it and rips off sheets of its armor plating. It strikes the ground and continues forward, kicking up a trench of asphalt before coming to a smoking stop. Nothing seems to come from within the transport, and not a moment later the cathedral explodes.

Chunks of masonry hurls through the air with horrible speed, striking the penitent engines and sending them tumbling away, and Iro watches as the pulpit whizzes through the air past him, engulfed in green flames, and strikes the side of the Thunderhawk hard enough to put a massive dent in it. The entirety of the church's exterior is now gone, while most of the interior remains where it was; Tabitha is, in fact, unharmed, if not completely horrified by what she was just involved in. The book that Callum had demanded hovers in front of him, striking him with the same warp energies as the lightning above.

And then, it simply stops. Callum drops to the ground, landing in a crouch, smoke trailing from his convulsing body, and the book falls to the floor with a hollow thud. The storm clouds stay overhead, rumbling ominously, and only Tabitha can hear the sorcerer's labored breathing and coughing. He lifts his head to look at her, his eyes burned clear from their sockets, but an insane grin is on the man's face. His voice is a strained hiss, but filled with joy. "It's doooooone. The ritual is doooooone. I have called the power and it has answered, and it has come. IT. HAS. COME!" He pushes himself to his feet unsteadily with his final words, laughing once again as he stands on shaky legs.

Dead silence fills the air. The ritual has been completed. Callum's fists are raised to the sky, and he laughs until he simply teeters over backwards, unable to muster the strength to hold himself up. He lands, his limbs splayed, still laughing weakly as he stares blindly up at the sky. "It is doooooone..."

"Grandfather Nurgle, give me my old voice again for just this hour. Entropy and decay consumes this universe but for one hour, grant me a voice fit to appreciate its beauty while it lasts. For the destruction before me is so marvelous, so powerful, I would cry if I still had the ability." A long time ago, Cyrus had a beautiful voice and was adored amongst the remembrancers of the Great Crusade. As he tries to sing, though monstrously deformed in the physical, his voice more than makes up for it as he sings to the scenery of warp spawned lightning strikes and thunder.

Imach the Editor

This time, Imach doesn't even bother readjusting his spell. He'll only hit empty space, after all. That, or corpses being ravaged by quite a lot of power. Too much for Callum, clearly.

"What, exactly is done? What have you accomplished, brother? I see no apotheosis, no great engine of war lashed to your will. You flesh is broken and burned for a storm and petty vandalism."

Can Imach Psyniscience or otherwise sense something going on besides our boss burning his own eyes out?

Khairi Fall-From-Grace

Khairi glances back at the shattered cathedral, then focuses on the Thunderhawk as it plows into the ground. As far as she knows, only Space Marines use them, as well as perhaps Inquisitorial retinues and the occasional Rogue Trader looking for a collector's item. She jets over and lands on the pilot canopy with a thunk, peering down into the cockpit.

Well, fuck. Really?
Imach turns his mind's eye to the warp, to see what exactly Callum had done. All around him, the border between reality and the immaterium is weakened and thin, and vague horrors press against the very fabric separating the two realms, straining it and screaming for the sorcerer's soul; whether they mean for Callum or for Imach, the Editor is unsure. But whatever immense power that Callum had called upon, he had only been a conduit for it; the power has seeped into the very earth itself, but is rapidly draining into something, or someone, else. Callum himself seems to have had almost all of his psychic might drained from him; he is a shadow of the sorcerer he once was.

This is cause for alarm. The ritual itself should have been enough might to level the better part of the continent, but it was simply.. vanishing. And to so easily strip of an ancient sorcerer such as Callum of his powers?

Callum groans as he tries to sit up, and then realizes he no longer has the book. He panics, feeling around him blindly for the tome. If he realizes that he is powerless, it does not show; he only wishes the tome, which Imach sees by his feet. Bending down to pick it up, the Editor begins flipping through the book for the rite that Callum had performed. The language is oddly familiar for the Editor; he had seen it before in snippets and samples in other eldritch tomes, but it had not been translated. It typically had been seen alongside ancient lore regarding the Eldar and their darker cousins, but it had been so long ago and so little seen that Imach struggled with the context.

Regardless, either something had gone wrong with the ritual, either due to outside interference or Callum's own ineptitude, or the ritual was not what the Black Sorcerer had thought it to be. Imach was more than familiar with the fates of other would-be sorcerer kings who had mistranslated a tome and committed themselves to the wrong ritual. It would have been amusing, if Imach himself wasn't thrust into the heart of an Imperial Saint's birthworld covered from shore to shore with guardsmen, sisters, and likely a handful of Astartes.

Khairi lands atop the Thunderhawk and peers inside, though the window is charred beyond relief. Something from within strikes the window twice, and then she hears, very faintly, the low whine of a plasma gun being charged..

Imach the Editor

So. He was right, and the tome was a trap. And the trap's maker, the architect of this fate, was not someone Imach needed to meet. He would need the others if he was to escape this planet alive.

"Callum's ignorance has consumed him. The ritual should have burned half this world, but the power isn't here. Nor is his. It may be an Eldar trap, or older. I don't know, and I'm not certain I want to."

Pausing only to secure the tome, the sorcerer leaves Callum to his fate and rushes towards the downed transport.

"We need to deal with the local Chapter representatives quickly and secure transport off-world. If my worst suspicions are true, it would not be healthy to stay here. If they are not, the Imperials will bury us under their bodies."

"Mighty engine of change! The Corpse-God's finest servants await you!"

Iro shakes his head, briefly considers putting Callum down for good, and thinks better of it. One way or the other he wouldn't live for long. With the cathedral annihilated and the newly arrived Astartes about to meet their end, the Imperials would have no more reason to exercise any restraint. Odds are they'd simply drop Earthshakers on this ruin until they were satisfied that nothing remained. Assuming that whatever Callum had unleashed didn't kill them all first.

Turning from Callum, Iro begins stomping his way out of the cathedral, building up speed to charge the first Astartes foolish enough to emerge.

Yep, heading for the Thunderhawk as quickly as possible.

Brother Morbos

Morbos lowered his hand, having raised it to shield his eyes from the warp-infused lightning and observed the remains of the cathedral. While too far to hear the sorcerer's words, his actions make it clear that he considered the ritual a success, despite no apparent visible effect. The book really had been too easy to find.

Getting away from the cathedral would be the priority now. Even the lackeys of the Imperium would have figured out what was going on in the place by now and the reprisal, while predictable, would be brutal.

Seethe, ye rolling clouds, gather thy stormborn might, and SMITE MINE ENEMY WITH THY UNFETTERED FURY!!!
Hotbrute slid the last body off his greatsword, letting it fall to the ground with a wet thud. He revved the motor a few times, spraying a thick mist of blood everywhere, only adding to the gore that surrounded him. Chunks of unidentifiable organs clung to the teeth of his chain weapon. Bone splinters stuck to his armor, held in place by the slowly-cooling blood that covered his frame. He wiped down his front with his free hand, smearing the coagulated remains, and removed the bulk of it with a flick of his wrist.

Glancing up from the cathedral-turned-abattoir, Hotbrute spotted the warp-scorched sorcerer who had hired them, bumbling about blindly as he searched for his precious book. There had been a lot of noise, whole sheets of arcane lightning, and a tremendous explosion, though if it came from the wizard or the ship that had bulldozed its way into the building, Hotbrute wasn't sure. He hadn't paid a lot of attention to the ritual before, and wasn't really concerned about what had happened to the wizard in the slightest. The thing that was occupying most of his attention now was the fact that all of his (immediate) enemies were dead or had run away, and he was still standing.

That meant it was time to move on.

The bloody berserker began to trod towards the fallen ship. He was looking forward to meeting whatever was inside.

No, kill. He was looking forward to killing whatever was inside.

He was looking forward to sawing them into a pulp and laughing.

Yes, that's what he meant.

Well, fuck. Really?
With a brilliant flash and an explosion, the front windshield of the Thunderhawk is blown out, with Khairi shielding herself carefully from the plasma backsplash and the molten debris. A moment later, emerging from the smoking ruin of the cockpit with a shimmering field about her, is a face familiar to the warband. She had initially been a contact to gather reagents and information regarding the ritual Callum had been intent upon performing, as the old sorcerer had given the band free reign to deal with whomever they felt would aide them best. Danica had been an amazing asset and help to the sorcerer's campaign, and it was through her that they had found the old Tau archive that had lead to the planet holding the book.

Until Callum finally met her, recognized her, and nearly died by her hands. As it turned out, Danica was an Inquisitor of the Ordo Xenos, and had been learning all she could of the ritual and of its originator; the woman knew of Callum personally, and had almost shoved a melta gun down the sorcerer's throat. She had escaped, narrowly, but had not appeared for some time. Now, she stands on the nose of the thunderhawk, cursing and trying to get her bearings. When she spies Imach she freezes, before turning to notice Khairi.

"poo poo." She stands still, keeping her hands slightly raised, palms out. "So, I assume this warp storm is Callum's fault." She seems to be mostly addressing Imach, though she glances up, seeing Tabitha tending to Callum in the cathedral. "Is that him, then? Burned out by his idiotic pursuit of immortality or whatever it was? If I'd thought he'd pull it off, I wouldn't have waited to get so close to him. poo poo!" She stomps in frustration, half-turning but keeping her hands in plain sight.

"You do know that, when I say 'warp storm', I don't just mean this." She gestures to the clouds above, still rumbling with purple lightning. "No, the entire planet has been enshrouded. There is no telepathic communication in or out of the system, and nothing can launch off of this planet. Your idiot lord there has trapped us here."

She looks back at Imach and finally notices the tome, her eyebrows raising. "So that's it, then? What did he do, exactly? Do you know? Can you read it?"

Meanwhile, in the church, Tabitha tends to Callum as best as she can; the man's pulse is thready, and his breaths are slow and shallow. He's alive, and he will survive, but the man will be all but crippled even if he can get the proper medical treatment he needs. She hears and feels a very faint, low rumbling from beneath the church, but a glance over to the others shows that they haven't felt a thing.

"Yes, I'm not certain, only a part, and slightly. I hope you weren't expecting more, I do so love to monologue. The book will be staying with me, until I know who and what set our erstwhile employer on this reckless course.

In truth, dear Inquisitor, I think you are rather more trapped than we. For who is known to the masters of the power which now holds this planet in its grip? I have lived a very long time, and this is hardly the first disaster I must escape. I wonder what ends you will be forced to, in the days to come?"

Imach turns to leave, and, struck by the coincidence, turns back. Ugly light plays idly over his hand.

"And now, a question for you: why did Callum perform his ritual here? What are you and your ilk hiding on this rock, Danica? I promise you, I am the most gentle questioner you will meet today."

Whee, Imach is addicted to being the smartest person in the room.

I guess if I had taken telepathy I could just mind probe her but where's the fun in that.

Blackstar

The Noise Marine peaked his interest when he saw the inquisitor burst out of the downed flyer. "Why Danica how charming! I didn't think you were the sort for my concerts. Though I guess few are." he said as he appraised the bodies his music had burst.

When he hears about Callum, he handles it in his usual braggadocious manner, "Well, Callum may have been a failure on a personal level. But the warp storm is to our benefit at the very least. We've cut the number of people on our heels from an entire naval battlegroup down to basically everyone on the planet, so our odds are improving. In any case what better way to find succor in the warp than to give the chaos gods an entire planet as tribute."

He takes a minute to find the shattered remnants of a mirror in the rubble to appraise his own situation. It appears as though the bombardment from earlier smudged his makeup, it's going to take a good spot of time to get it fixed.

As he sits down on some scorched remnants of ferro-crete that use to be the church and pulls out his foundation and eyeliner, he turns back to the Inquisitor "So what are the job prospects for an inquisitor who accidentally aided and embedded traitors to drop a planet into a warp storm? You know if you were to give up the facade I'm in the market for a manager, my old was was left on the ship that blew up upon our arrival. You can see proof of my credentials scattered around here and there."

Tabitha "tabby" Smythe, Hospitallier of the Order of the Cleansing Water

As the rumbling starts, Tabitha grabs Callum, and half drags, half flies with him away from the center of the ritual. As She does so, she shouts out, "Someone give me a hand! The ground is rumbling over here, and I think we should get as far away as possible! MOVE IT!!!!" A little over-dramatic for Tabitha's taste, but she always takes her patient's safety seriously. If she wasn't dragging their weakened patron, she'd be airborne by now.

Iro's gait slows once it becomes clear that an army of Astartes won't be emerging from the Thunderhawk. Not yet, anyway. It seemed the Inquisitor that had almost killed Callum had arrived. Pity she hadn't succeeded and saved them all the trouble Callum had just caused for them.

He's on the verge of speaking when he hears Tabitha; he glances back and frowns. Of course she was saving the fool, or at least trying.

"The entire world has been engulfed in a warp storm. Rumbling in the ground is the least of our worries. If something does emerge, drop him. Unlike a blind, unconscious sorcerer we'd have to carry, you are actually useful."

Well, fuck. Really?
Danica clambers down from the nose of the Thunderhawk, scoffing at Imach. "Of course, I forgot; you're a Thousand Son. Far be it from me to offer my expertise in xenos runes to figure out what in the hell Callum did." She glances at Khairi and shakes her head, turning back to Imach. "No. My acolytes were busy battling what was left of your craft. I was coming alone; I had figured I could more easily get in close to Callum and end him alone than if I had dragged along any Inquisitorial stormtroopers."

At Blackstar's comments, she rolls her eyes. "You lot have done enough killing and rampaging in the pursuit of this bloody thing that you've done the Imperium a few solids." She studies Imach for a minute before shaking her head. "I truly can't fathom as to why. The eldar have done all they can to keep it from our charts, and we don't even receive tithes from this planet. I noticed the tau fleets backed off once you entered the system, so there must.."

Before she can finish her statement, Tabitha draws her attention, dragging Callum as swiftly as she can from the cathedral. Danica strides forward, her brow furrowed, when the ground beneath the cathedral crumbles inwards. The rumbling intensifies, and a faint mechanical buzzing can be heard from deep within the ever-growing hole that was once the cathedral. Behind Tabitha, the ground keeps giving way, and she barely keeps pace with the limp body of the unconscious sorcerer.

Several long, sharp blades emerge from beneath the ground in multiple places throughout the courtyard, and long, black arms reach skyward, dragging thin, skeletal bodies from beneath the ground, draped in thin, ancient leather. The beings that emerge are covered in runes that Imach recognizes from the tome, and their eyes light up with the same horrible green glow from the ritual; they stand hunched over, making an odd hissing noise as their eyes squint and focus.

From the hole comes a veritable swarm of tiny, scarab looking robots, their mandibles clicking and their bodies shuddering with green arcs of electricity, and behind them emerge more of the skeletal beings, looking a bit less feral. Danica freezes in place, her eyes wide with terror. Before she can even react, one of the feral beings has lunged at her, its long bladed fingers emerging through the backside of her armor and dragging her to the ground. She is able to get one shot on the creature with her inferno pistol, turning its head to slag as it slumps against her; while she struggles, the body simply seems to disintegrate in a green light, leaving the inquisitor wounded on the ground.

Y'ALL KNOW WHAT THIS IS

No combat just yet, since they're still massing, but this might be a good time to find a more defensible position.

Tabitha "tabby" Smythe, Hospitallier of the Order of the Cleansing Water

As the ground gives way, all Tabitha can do is keep moving as fast as she can with the sorcerer, ignoring the harsh words from Iro. Doesn't matter if it is the Imperium or the forces of Chaos, everyone will leave you behind the moment it becomes expeditious. Did they all forget how much Callum had kept them up over the last few months? All that hospitality gone. As the metallic creatures emerge from the ground she pulls Callum as close as she can, and quickly snatches up one of the fallen sororitas bolters and some clips off the near-by ground. She may not be trained, but she knows her auto pistol will be of little use.

Of course that is when the damned Inquisitor goes down. Seeing she is still alive, Tabitha has no choice; her oath means she will help all of those who are injured, even foolish Inquisitors.

Not here, we don't need this, how can they be in a storm, are some of the thoughts that race through the sorcerer's head. What little he knows of the ancient horrors tells him that the Warp is anathema to them -- but perhaps they have overcome this. Their great machines outstrip all others.

"We need to leave. I don't know how to fight them. Callum's ritual has obviously awakened them. Whether by their design, or by the sting of his power, I do not know. I only know they fear the warp, and anything that can cut through their hide."

Imach spares a glance for their medic.

"Get her awake, if you can. If we can use her properly, the Imperials can be sent into the grinder before us."

The sorcerer desperately searches his mystical knowledge for a suitable tactic, but fails in the face of the ancient horrors.

"What in the world..."

Iro turns to fully face the emerging army. He'd heard a few rumors of skeletal xenos machines like these. Mostly, the rumors said it was better to just run when they appeared. Iro risks turning in place again and scans the area for defensive positions, then turns back to the xenos feeling a little more prepared. If they attempted to swamp them with sheer numbers, at least they had somewhere to fall back to. Iro braces his legs and points a claw at the assembling army, not even caring if these things understand a challenge.

Khairi watches in incredulity as the cathedral collapses into the ground and spikey metal skeletons pop out of the ground. Unfortunately these weren't friendly spikey metal skeletons, as evidenced when one impales their Inquisitor comrade.

She jets off the remains of the Thunderhawk and lands next to Tabitha and Danica, aiming to protect them from the coming horde.
