I was working in this very radome (giant ball on top) and almost killed myself and two coworkers, theoretically speaking.

The giant 6-meter satellite dish inside rotates on a 4-foot wide pedestal about 5 feet high. There is a cable tray with all the power and data stuff in it. This tray wraps around the circumference at the top of this big pedestal.

We wanted to pull the tray off, and noticed it was held on by a ring of maybe 30 bolts. I had assembled these things a bunch of times, but forgot that this ring of bolts not only held the tray on but also connected the antenna to the pedestal.

We managed to get all the bolts out and soon realized the tray wouldn't come off. Cue panicked looks and a realization that the only reason we weren't dying was that the antenna dish is counterweighted by several thousand pounds of lead weights. Bolts were hastily reinstalled and we lived to get wasted down in the mountain town later that night.

The beginning of this trip also had a perilous event involving frozen ice. The giant superstructure that supports the big radome and other poo poo was encased in ice because of the mountain climate. My coworker started climbing the stairs in the scaffolding and suddenly it was raining death as the vibration simultaneously freed all of the ice clinging to the structure. No one's head was split open fortunately.

Retrospectively, this was probably the best job I've ever had in terms in crazy travel and drinking fun time. Right out of college, as well!

That one dish looks like it's about to hatch :3:

It's hard to clearly make it out in the video, but that is what the 4-lead black component is. The only things I can clearly see on the board is that, a resistor, and 2 capacitors. I think there should be another resistor in there somewhere to make it a full capactive dropper + rectifier + smoothing capacitor setup, but either I'm not seeing it or that is the part where they cheaped out.

I mean, this is probably still dangerous, but the video is just wrong.

Ah good catch on the rectifier.

I was just reminded of a story about a guy my dad worked with.

He worked for Washington Gas for a while checking lines and working at pump stations/checkpoints.
One day there was a report of a natural gas leak at a station and 2 guys were sent to investigate.

Apparently, one of the guys was lazy and instead of walking across the room to flip a breaker off, he shorted the circuit with a wrench to kick the breaker.

Can anyone guess what happened when that short caused a spark?

My dad was the one who told me about the incident, and about that guy's propensity to kick circuits by bridging them with wrenches instead of walking across the goddamn room and flipping the breaker.

Why that station even had power after they confirmed the gas leak is totally beyond me.

Raskolnikov38 posted:

I'd assume the vaporization is just dad hyperbole but that charred remains were there to figure out what happened
Yeah I don't think natural gas works like that. I think he means 'obliterated' or something to that effect. I don't think natural gas can vaporize a car, let alone a whole substation.

Here he is using the flyback off an old tv to power the drat thing. A good lesson in why you don't gently caress with such a beasty.

That one wasp that lands right on the wire terminal, get stuck, and proceeds to twitch every time one of his buddies gets zapped to oblivion is particularly satisfying.

I was just about to say after watching the wasp napalm, why the hell don't you just shove a road flare in there?
This is the best way to kill a nest. Get yourself a couple of road flares and one of those battery powered air mattress pumps and you're in business. Toss a smoke bomb in for effect.

Make sure your rear end is covered though, those nests can get pretty big and they might sneak out the back door and come for ya.
