WHOOOO?

One of the most renowned manga artists in the industry right now, Noboyuki Fukumoto, born in 1958, is the author of several psychological drama, seinen and mahjong manga. His biggest claim to fame on the west is the long-running Akagi manga, who has been running for almost 25 years and has both a live-action drama and an anime adaptation. The recurring themes in his manga are how money can corrupt people (except for those who still keep strong to their principles), the criminal underworld of the Yakuza, insane gambling evil old magnates, INTENSE MAHJONG GAMES and of course his incredibly distinctive art style >:7)

Recommended Reading/Watching

Buraiden Gai

Buraiden is my pick for the beginners to his manga since it's only 5 volumes long but has a lot of good stuff! It's about a headstrong and independent teenager down in his luck that is framed in a murder and is sent to a horrifying "reformatory" facility called the "Human Institute".

Gin to Kin

Great read! Gin to Kin is about a young man with money problems that spends all of his cash in horse racing. He meets in a fateful encounter a "villainous man" who takes him under his wing and shows him the way of "villany", where shady deals in the underworld engulf him...

The Legend of Strongest Man Kurosawa

44 year old Kurosawa is a lonely and awkward guy with no friends, unmarried and just wants to get more popular. Things... Things get worse.

Kaiji

Crunchyroll

Unlucky loser Kaiji lives like a bum after finishing high school. Living on a lovely house and on welfare, he has no prospects for his future. When a loan shark called Endo visits him and tells him that his outstanding bet can be solved in two ways, gambling on the mysterious ship "Espoir" or working as a slave for ten years, a dark journey awaits him....

Akagi

Crunchyroll (Anime)
Crunchyroll (Live Action Drama)

Running from 1992 until now, this manga talks about Akagi Shigeru, a mahjong prodigy that since playing for his first time at the age of 13, has become a legend due to his prowess. After defeating several opponents he finally gets to duel completely insane hosed up magnate Washizu Iwao in a deadly mahjong game where THINGS! GO! loving CRAZY!

There are also several others! Talk about them if you want to!

i just didn't find it as strong as the first. like, there when kaiji pulls something off it's really clever and then at the end it makes a lot of pretty poignant arguments about humanity with characters that seem like rich assholes but actually have a pretty good point to make

in the second season a lot of what kaiji ends up doing happens sort of due to coincidence and the big villain at the end is just 'a jerk who owns a casino and is a jerk'

I enjoy his work, but a lot of his characters seem to bust out long monologues, spewing coffee-table philosophy for pages on end.

eg: Buraiden Gai chapter 2, the cop talks crap for 4/5 of the chapter

My favorite thing about the Fukumoto manga I've read is how they always sympathize heavily with the working class and generally involves a lot of empathy towards people in bad situations.

Shocked I tell you
I have been reading the newest arc of Kaiji and it's still fun. The newest gamble is probably the most interesting one yet. I have a bit of difficulty with Majong based gambles because I don't understand the rules. The newest gamble in Kaiji is called One Poker and it's super easy to understand and fun to go through.

Kurosawa is one of the few media that realistically addresses almost all of the aspects of how hosed up being homeless is.

Disappearance Diary is another. It's an autobiographical look at the authors period of alcoholism and homelessness. It's more lighthearted overall, though.

Just read Buraiden Gai. Good stuff. The story definitely went differently than what I thought; I was expecting a lot more out of the detective but I guess not much ever happened on his end. The institute warden guy was definitely the best part, especially his speech to the kids when they "graduate".

Steven doesn't want me watching him sleep anymore.
So what's the story with FKMT anime adaptations? They made a few that seemed fairly popular and successful, and maybe that was mostly in the west or something, but at least it was successful enough to do three seasons. They've totally given up on animation and are only focusing on the ultra-condensed, sharp-edges-removed live-action stuff now or something?

I want my Kurosawa animation. :( He's history's strongest man.

ten is fkmt's magnum opus. also probably the most difficult to get into for your average person considering the mahjong is far more involved than in akagi or probably any of his other works. but it is worth it. fkmt works always have powerful endings but ten is on just a whole nother level. even compared to kurosawa's ending

Season 2 of Kaiji has big pacing problems. The first half is rock solid but the whole pachinko arc could have probably 4 or 5 episodes worth cut from it and be easily edited down into a tight, exciting narrative instead of tons of footage of ball bearings swirling around drains and the backstory of some loser villain that's totally inconsequential.

I tried to watch Akagi and got maybe six or seven episodes in but it just didn't click for me like Kaiji, which is one of my favorite series of all time. I don't have a great grasp of Mahjong (I get the basics) so I don't have the innate understanding of why certain things are so unusual or important. That isn't totally necessary to enjoy the show, but what I really didn't like was that it's just not the same to go from a series like Kaiji, where the hero is smart but still a struggling underdog, to one like Akagi where it's made pretty clear that the protagonist is a genius that will definitely dominate everyone around him, even if there's a wrinkle in his plan now and then.

Started reading Kurosawa because of this thread, it's rad so far. Just brutal in the best way.
