It's not about boot straps, it's about actually doing something with your life. People like this just refuse to take responsibility for their own careers rather than cry about how life is unfair because they might have to work a lovely job for a year - seriously, one whole year, which makes me wonder how long this person even lasted - before being handed their dream job.

Also, lol at anyone comparing this situation to real poverty. This is just an entitled brat crying to an echo chamber.

I love the comment section for that story. One person tries to help her understand why she did a dumb thing so she can learn from it., one male feminist thinks he's going to get cooch by sucking up, and some woman from huffington post making it look like she's offering a job to this woman but is really just promoting her failing brand and herself. It's like the 2015 internet in minutia.

it's a pretty common practice that once you accept a benefit eligible position you are not eligible to post out for a year, and this is because they want to avoid excessive turnover or employees avoiding yearly performance reviews in roles. the only way to avoid this stipulation is to be promoted.

the dumb millennial should have had a conversation with her manager about her goals and asked to be introduced to the management team of the Twitter department. this is what normal, well-adjusted, career and goal oriented people will do. she is none of those.

The breast part is that for the next 5 to 10 years every job she applies for is going to find that essay and pass on her leading to her either being homeless or to a porn set.

Pretty sure that's not what's happening. You can point out it's a problem, but until it's fixed you have to play by the rules that are in place.

There was a GHOST here.
It's gone now.
All my slave wage friends have 1-3 roommates and buy those $100 monthly transit passes. Few own cars. They also afford this working part-time, because they're all in school. We live in a city of around 1 million, so not exactly the middle of bumfuck nowhere.
I mean, yeah, minimum wage is poo poo and sometimes you're hosed no matter what because of it. This just happened to be not one of those situations because most people consider rent, transit and balance before moving to a new city.

I don't see the problem with this girl descending into poverty for doing no planning before maxing out her credit card and getting an apartment for 80% of her salary so she could break into the clever tweet business at a food delivery app, this is the way it's supposed to be

I think this person comes off as a huge baby with no sense of personal responsibility, but I have always wondered, what the hell do people who work minimum wage jobs actually do in these comically overpiced cities? I realize they don't live in town, but why commute for an hour to work at McDonalds in SF when they probably have a McDonalds 5 minutes away from where they live?

We just pile them all into bunkbed cages packed six to a supply closet, unlock the door when it's morning, and they have a curfew when they have to get back. And they have to empty their own buckets in the morning or I start marking down penalties.

Exactly! So as I said, the current structure has to fail or be torn down or the collapse of the middle class and city wide riots. Having hundreds of thousands of people stuff envelops demanding a living wage and mailng it to legislators is the only way we have right now to enact the change we want. Protests, posting on a comedy website, or hoping for change isn't gonna do it.

Half the country is brainwashed into believing that someone's quality life is 100% due to decisions made by that person and not really anything else. No one thinks that posting about problems on the Internet is gonna make serious change, but it is a way to spread ideas and information.

I mean I understand what you mean and basically agree: we are screwed. But I think I'm going to complain about it on the Internet.
