This is the port of the anime as gently caress arcade game right?

Anime was outlawed until the PS1 era so everything had to have at least the box art westerned up or, in some cases, completely removing the sprites from the Ranma 1/2 game and replacing them with more appropriate ones.

It should be obvious what's bad about this, but it's completely baffling because the game is nothing like this at all. There's some questionable female character design, but every sexual image in the game was on the box. Everything else in the game was completely innocent and the "sexy" scenes are played as jokes in-game. It's certainly no "cornucopia of debauchery." I have no idea why they tried to sell it this way, at least in America. They even packed in a booby mousepad and a "sexy" pillowcase.

It's a shame because the game is good but nobody wants to play it because they think it's porn.

I played it because I thought it was porn but it turned out to just be bad.

A lot was from before or during early stages of the big anime boom in the mid 90's and marketeers still thought that that anything 'foreign looking' would scare off buyers.
It wasn't just anime, you got stuff like changing the name of Bitmap Brother's 'The Chaos Engine' to 'Soldiers of Fortune' because it sounded less weird.

Yeah it was originally a Baki the Grappler game that got picked up by one of the UK budget shovelware companies, we got a few random Japanese games that way: the original PS2 EDF, Shienryu as 'Steel Dragon EX', the PS2 port of Assault Suit Valken (Cybernator), that game that starred Gackt...

I looked up Zillion because of that box expecting it to be a text heavy RPG or something hard to make look exciting, but no it's a platform adventure thing like a mix of Impossible Mission and Metroid based on a late 80's anime series :psyduck:

To be fair, IIRC this is what the CGI actually looked like in the film, too. It was intended to be off-putting, since the character here has kind of gone full-psycopath by the point depicted.

Does beg the question of why you'd advertise the game with it front-and-center. Maybe it's a horror game! (It probably isn't a horror game.)

It was a mix of platform game (surprise, all licenses were then) and I think the earliest 3D stuff on the SNES? It was still a bad game though.

I seem to remember there being a lot of buzz about the movie at the time, it was based on a Stephen King story when that wasn't lol worthy, had a lot of that newfangled CGI stuff and 'VR' and 'cyber' was 'in'. But then it was awful and crashed and burned.
