The looters aren't as bad as the rear end in a top hat Cultists from Dead Rising 1 though, the cultists always hung around in groups and would suicide bomb you when they got low on health, they were the worst.

Chuck Greene and Nick Ramos just aren't as fun as Frank West.

Another part of it is that the first dead rising the fully embraced the stereotypes and the b-movie feel for extra corniness. Subsequent games... not so much. I mean, thank god for dead rising 2 and its co-op. Greeting my friends by throwing phallic objects at their face is a staple of our gaming experience now. The series isn't really meant to be played straight, and dead rising 3 is really awkward for it.

I almost feel as though they were trying to tap into the same market that likes stuff like The Walking Dead, which seems really misguided. I'm not really a fan of zombie stuff, especially if its trying to be super serious, or its lingering popularity, but I always liked the silliness of Dead Rising. After seeing how well DR2: OTR runs, though, I may check it out on the PC when it goes on sale. For some reason I was under the impression this game had tons of optimization issues. Also happy to see the photography stuff back in, since I actually liked that part of the first game.

So for anyone curious, Zombie Go Boom actually made a nail-studded baseball bat to test on a plastic skull! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJb59bNClXw Unfortunately, it's not quite as wondrous as its many video game appearances would suggest.

Assuming nobody minds it, I'm going to keep posting Zombie Go Boom videos whenever they're relevant to the current gameplay. As annoying as they can be sometimes, they're a cathartic blood splatter show and reveal some interesting properties of various weapons, including some Dead Rising-esque joke weapons like throwing vinyl records or rolls of Christmas wrapping paper. For instance, to honor the now fallen broadsword, here's the founder of Cold Steel using a two-handed broadsword on one of their more advanced targets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou3CMaM7UaQ chitoryu12 fucked around with this message at 04:32 on Mar 7, 2016 |

Also, I had a familiar feeling watching that video of the Cold Steel great sword and pulled out one of my many books on historical weaponry. It's extremely close to a real Thirty Years War parade sword in the book, but with a practical blade meant for cutting instead of a wavy "flame" blade that just looks cool.

Very nerdy, but cold steel stuff isn't really accurate to historical pieces, though some of their videos are certainly weird enough to watch. Some antique dealers and collectors I follow say that CS has improved at least in some regards though. The Scholagladiatoria Channel is run by an author, Victorian sabre dealer, and HEMA instructor that has lots of good info on this stuff (including those wavy bladed weapons). As far as the game is concerned, I think another fun thing about DR1 and the bits I've played of 2 is that they encourage you to play around with weapons. When I was trying to go for certain objectives I'd load up on those mini-saws in DR1, but there were tons of options that were viable even if you were just trying to finish the game. Also, there enough options to go around that you could just save guns to help make certain survivor escort missions easier, which really helped balance out the sub-par AI and pathing. Looking forward to seeing more of OTR.

Oh yeah, they're definitely not perfect 15th century katana replicas or anything (though their stuff is definitely legit and their swords work as swords, not display pieces made of cheap stainless steel). It's just that the whole shape of the great sword, from the half-grip with the extra guard to the blunt tip (designed for hacking rather than stabbing), is a very close replica to this particular parade sword. Cold Steel just had a practical blade shape instead of the useless wave.

The Chuck fight is really weird in that guns are worthless, but it's totally counter-intuitive to try to melee fight a guy on a motorcycle, let alone one with chainsaws strapped to the handlebars. It just seems like the developers had a cool idea in mind and couldn't figure out a way to actually implement it without making the players hop the fence over & over until Chuck's bike got stuck on level geometry long enough for Frank to run up and wail on him.

What you're supposed to do is wait for Chuck to do that 360 spin, because after that he does a beeline charge right at wherever you're standing. If he misses you he'll run into whatever you're standing in front of and get stunned for a bit, which gives you a chance to hit him. The bike physics are a little wonky so it's easy for him to get stuck, at which point he'll switch to the molotovs. Shei-kun posted:Katey

I find an inventory full of sniper rifles to do well in the Chuck fight. The damage is still kind of low, but you do (IIRC) get bonus damage for headshots, and keeping your distance does wonders for keeping you from getting hit. Chuck's probably one of the best done psychpaths in the series. Nothing about his vanilla DR2 character is changed in the slightest, but this time Katey didn't make it (as seen from her bloody backpack and Unidentified Handheld Gaming Device at the start) and he snapped.

RIP sad dad Pretty neat to see another side of an established character, though. Considering some of the combo weapons Chuck makes, though, I'm not surprised that without Katie grounding him he went right off the deep end. (Frank just makes the weapons because he thinks it will be cool)

# ? Mar 13, 2016 18:11 |
It's intriguing that guns are so weak. I know they wanted to make wacky melee weapons and combo weapons the centerpiece, but it may have been better to leave guns or ammo as rarities. Shotguns are especially painful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX3z5jI4vXs

Well they're pretty good for zombie crowd control. I may be mixing up my pro strats here but I'm sure one of the better methods of clearing a swarmed survivor is to unload a shotgun in their general direction. And there are definitely some psychopaths for whom wading in like you're auditioning for Commando: The Musical is a very viable tactic.

Now that'd just be mindless torture. What I had in mind was training him to play better and spare him the suffering of spending too much time in this twisted nightmare of a game. It's for his own good. Your suggestion does express the spirit of Bubsy perfectly though.
