If you head left and up a bit from the start point on Core 3, there's an alcove just up some stairs, with a bannister with a pistol overlooking the main space (I think it's usually an enemy spawning point). Enemies can't shoot at you there, and any that do come up the stairs are easily dispatched. Once you're there, the level is all but done.
