I have a question for other Automation players :

Do any of you think the campaign has gone in a good direction over the past couple years? I personally get the distinct feeling that the only person who enjoys any of the changes to the game to increase the focus on optimizing sliders in engineering is Killrob.

I've long been at the point where every single time I want to play the game, I fire it up, design a car, get to the pointless mass of sliders that is engineering and just say gently caress it and quit. It's a shame because I really enjoyed the campaign back in the Kee engine days when that part was broken, the automation slider was just an inverse difficulty slider, and the campaign wasn't primarily about optimizing to some idiotic bullshit that no one other than Killrob has memorized. The changes to the rest of the game have been so positive, including many other aspects of the campaign, but to me engineering just completely ruins it and eliminates my interest to play or my desire to recommend the game to anyone else beyond a toy for beamng export.

It's hard to judge frankly; as it is right now, many of the sliders and stuff are (apparently) stand-ins for various systems that will be added as the campaign matures and develops. The purpose of the light campaign mode is, for the moment, to make sure that the behind the scenes nuts and bolts are working properly. Beyond that, more and better tooltips would go a long way to making things more transparent.

Though I do agree, that the campaign mode has a very steep learning curve, and is very imposing with all of its sliders. Sometimes I do wonder, talking with the devs, just how much of a plan they have for the campaign mode and how much of that plan will actually make it into the game. Fortunately, they do seem to recognise their mistakes and when things work, or don't, and aren't afraid of taking huge chunks of the game and throwing it away if it just doesn't work.

I'm still in the wait and see mode for this. Also, if you're looking for stuff to do, there's always the multitude of user-created challenges on the official forums in the meantime!

We just released a new patch that addresses a big number of issues, including some (like engine bay fitting) that will interest not only the tycoon players. Have a look at the changelog! This version is now available on the openbeta branch and if it doesn't add new bugs, it will be merged with the public default branch very soon. Cheers!

I mean it was fun to play with and all, but there are vanishingly few real production cars with a mid-mounted, transverse engine and all-wheel drive, so it kind of made sense to get rid of it.

Mods are going to break for a while, and the game should be getting a lot faster and more stable, so all good news!

Also, I am thinking of getting some quick and fun challenges up and running here, considering that a lot of us are going to have some free time going forward...I've got some ideas of my own, but if you have any of your own, by all means post them!

After a very long beta phase, the Lite Campaign 4.0 update is finally out! All kinds of changes in this, including a game engine change (to Unreal 4.24), vastly improved performance and lighting, lots of bug fixes and a major revamp of the Lite Campaign, obviously. Also, here's the latest update of what's coming next:

Been a little bit neglectful of the thread of late; here's the latest dev update:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9XiA4xe5Y0

Version 4.1 just closed out of open beta and into the public branch in the last little while, and it's a pretty major change overall, with the 3D fixtures, transparent glass, actual working lights (including in Beam) and much more, in addition to a considerably more fleshed-out campaign mode too!

As for challenges, the BRC is back on the Automation forums, this time with a series similar to the 1990s-era BPR GT1 and GT2 classes; check it out here!

I haven't touched Automation in quite a while. Have they done anything to make engineering and factory configuration not some stupid bullshit where you have to memorize 10,000 permutations of exactly how the devs intended you to set the sliders for a specific kind of vehicle or you cannot make money?

I haven't messed around with the Campaign Mode for a long time, but everything I've seen talking about the LC V4.0+ versions (in the last 6-12 months or so) is that everything has been pretty dramatically changed for the better.

This has slipped my mind for a while now, unfortunately!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ulL80MW2fU

Some decidedly mixed news here from back in August; one of the devs for Automation has fallen ill and can no longer work on the game, but they are moving forward with working around and replacing them as best as possible. This is kind of a big deal, since the dev team for Automation is only six people, which is remarkably, insanely small for a game of this scope and magnitude. This means two things - first, the 4.2 update has been delayed until around the end of the year or so, but they're also going to be splitting up the later 5.0 update into two; 4.3, which will introduce superchargers, will apparently arrive shortly after 4.2, probably around February or March or so!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q4YyuHga3I

And the most recent dev update, talking about progress on a lot of things like visual customisation of engine placement/angles (it won't have an effect on performance calculations unfortunately), some campaign stuff and also discussion of turbo calculations, with compressor maps and everything.

As someone who bought Automation but knows nothing about cars: should I learn about cars then play Automation, or can I play Automation to learn about cars? If the former, what info should I need to know before playing?

I know the very basics about how an engine works, and I'm a tube amp tech/former electrician so I know some stuff about car electronics, but that's about it.

The long and the short of it is, no you don't need to know anything about cars, but it does help to a degree. Mostly to just avoid really weird things (like odd powertrain configurations) that wouldn't be particularly realistic. Not to say that there aren't unrealistic setups that work well though...

Yes, the first opt-in beta test dropped yesterday afternoon; I've been helping beta test it for the last three weeks or so, and it's been kind of a job getting to this state. But, the turbos are already a pretty substantial improvement over what they were, and will only get better I suspect.

Fixes are incoming on a lot of stuff already, and then more content will be added in stages; sequential turbocharging, twin-scroll turbos and the like, as well as version 4.2 of the Lite Campaign.

It's been a while, but we've published a new Little (well, not really little) Dev Update!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4gWjOfUf-0

Talk of all the new engine calculations that are coming into Automation soon, probably some time in the next few open beta patches. It was necessary to make these changes because forced induction engines already have this, and it was causing issues with the AI car generator and game balance; it took some time, but it's going to make the campaign work a lot easier going forward.
