Cards
Cards are a mechanic in Paragon which allow users to upgrade their heroes in-game. Players can bring a deck into a match, and then purchase these cards for use in-game with Amber(CXP). There are 6 slots for cards and some are unique to specific affinities.

CXP(Card Experience Points)
This is how you advance your build. CXP is earned by killing minions, players, or through harvesters.

Harvesters
Harvesters look like a key-hole on the map. You place a harvester and it passively builds CXP over time. Anyone can collect from a harvester, and the CXP is shared with your whole team (probably something a support or jungler would do). Harvesters can be destroyed by the enemy team, and CXP stolen. There is then a cooldown for harvesters being rebuilt or replaced by the enemy team.

Maps
Agora is the primary (and currently only) map for the game. It follows the traditional mirrored MOBA map layout, with 3 lanes leading down the map to each team's core. Each lane has 2 towers and an inhibitor for each side. There is also a Jungle that sits between the three lanes. The aim of the game is to destroy the opponents core.

My MSpaint Jungle Map

Still figuring out spawn, respawn, and buff duration times.
The inner jungle harvesters can be placed 3 minutes into the game.
The outer lane harvesters can be placed 6 minutes into the game.
The Prime harvester can be placed 9(?) minutes into the game.
Red (Damage) buff spawns 1:30 into the game. Red gives a Power buff to the user, and is transferable upon death.
Blue (Energy) buff spawns 1:30 into the game. Blue gives an Energy regen and cooldown reduction buff to the user, and is transferable upon death.
Basic XP camps spawn 1:30 into the game. Just XP camps as of right now.
Orb Prime spawns ... Holding this buff reveals you to the enemy team on the map, you must escort it to the return spot. This gives everyone alive on your team the "OP Buff" and activates their Prime Card.
The orb is dropped if the holder backs or dies. If no one picks it up it returns to the Orb Prime camp after ... and despawns after ...
Black(ADC) buff spawns ... Black gives the user increased attack speed and damage to towers, and is transferable upon death.

Lane Minions
Lane minions drop CXP(Card Experience Points) as orbs on the ground. Walking over or near them lets you collect the CXP, and it is shared by anyone nearby on your team. From what I could tell "last hitting" gives bonus CXP and makes the orbs float to you so you auto-collect.
Since the orbs drop on the ground, there is potential to deny CXP to your lane opponent.

Deck Building
Decks consist of 40 total cards (Prime Helix, Equipment, and Upgrades).
Maximum of 60 card points in game for your build.
You earn card points in increments of 3.
Can buy/discard cards while in base or dead.
Upgrade cards can only be applied to Equipment that already have that stat.
Upgrade cards cannot be removed or swapped out after being socketed.

5 Elements Affinities of Cards/Heroes
Intellect - Blue
Growth - Green
Order - White
Fury - Red
Corruption - Black

(Since the game is new, and I've literally only played about 4 games total I'll be adding new poo poo once I learn more about this game. This is mainly to get initial players connected.)

Early Meta Predictions
Here is my idea behind how the game should start/play out to help you succeed.

    Solo or "Top" lane
Orb Prime/Blue buff side is your solo lane. Solo starts at Blue buff with the Jungler.

    Mid or "Mid" Lane
Mid starts at Red with the ADC and support. Mid gets the Red buff and goes to Lane.

    ADC or "Bot" Lane
Black/Red buff side is the ADC lane. They start at Red with the Mid then go to lane.

    Jungle
    • Starts at blue with Solo, Jungle takes blue and follows Solo to lane.
    • Shares XP in solo until the solo-side back harvester is placeable, then rotates to place.
    • Clears the Basic XP camps in the left Jungle, then rotates to Mid.
    • Jungle meets up with Support and clears the other jungle camps.

    Support
    • Starts with ADC and Mid at Red buff and goes to ADC lane.
    • Shares XP in ADC lane until ADC-side back harvester is placeable, then rotates to place.
    • Support rotates to Mid, meets up with Jungle to clear the ADC-side Basic XP camps.

With this idea the Jungle and Support act as jungle clear and gank/pressure relief squad, while maintaining harvester placement and gathering. This allows your "carries" to get solo XP and be ahead.
My idea is that the lanes most worth ganking early are the Mid and ADC, since the black buff is available earlier than Orb Prime. This puts more pressure on the enemy team so you can get ahead.

Still very early, so this is open to discussion. If you have any thoughts, please share them.:effort:

Deck Building Advice
If you played another MOBA you know about being 6-slotted. It basically means that all slots (active and passive) are complete, after selling your potions/ward/key.

In this game, you have 60 card points to spend on your build and most equipment cards cost 3 card points, and being 6-slotted means 6 equipment.
This is basic math but 3 * 6 = 18, that means you have 42 points for upgrades if you intend to become fully built at any point in the game.
You'll need 18 upgrades to socket in any mixture of upgrade costs (You should end with something like 26/40 cards in your deck).
This is your "core" build, and once the game gets more complex, you'll have 2 equipment and 6 upgrades that can flex in against certain teams.

Ezell's outline & Example ADC build -Thanks
Basic Deck Build Outline:
6x Equipment Cards = 18 pts
12x 2 Cost Upgrade Cards = 24 pts
6x 3 Cost Upgrade Cards = 18 pts
Total = 60 pts

Basic ADC Build:
Windcarver Blade: 3x Strike
Brawler's Ward/Key: 3x Strike
Windcarver Blade: 3x Major Kinetic
Blade of Agora: 3x Major Strike
Spear of the Rifthunter: 3x Wound
Spear of the Rifthunter: 3x Wound

If you like 2,4,5,6 or 7 cost equipment cards because they do cool stuff, get your calculator and aim for the 6-slot 60pts.
You won't be able to put Major Strike or Major Cast in every socket, but you'll have a strongly structured deck because you managed to hit full build (where other people are failing due to lack of understanding).

Workin' on it.

Its gimmick is its the first three-axis MOBA, meaning there's up and down terrain. (height advantage and whatnot)

I felt like I was being kind of an rear end, so I gave the game the benefit of the doubt and looked it up.

I can see why they're marketing the ability to look up and down as a feature now.

Cut it out, the players don't want to hear my problems.
I got in semi-late into the Online Tests and was able to get a few matches in before today.

Harvesters are a very neat concept. They collect resources for the whole team but need to be accessed to collect from time to time. If attacked, they lose resources (and can be destroyed eventually), but the allied harvesters give notice to the team when they're being attacked. They can be placed by anyone after a set amount of time in the match, but those with Harvester Keys deploy much faster.

Cards discarded don't go back into your "deck." Building a deck around early/late game is not a bad idea, since discarding cards refunds all the points. I like having some early tankiness on my characters, so I'll include a Tempered Steel card with 3 1-point defensives to activate the passive on Tempered Steel. If all my actives and passives are filled, I can discard that card and replace it with something stronger.

Paragon is literally Dota/League in 3D. They have taken all the standard 2d overhead moba gameplay and translated it into a 3rd person game as directly as possible. The main differences are that your "autoattack" has to be aimed and doesn't automatically hit (though the range, etc is still similar), instead of dragon or runes you have harvesters, and to get your boss buff you have to capture a flag after killing the boss. Even stuff like the deck system doesn't make much of a difference, in practice it's just a more limited / customizable shop.

Battleborn can look a bit similar to Dota/League on the surface but in practice it's quite a bit different, it doesn't play like a standard 3-lane map, the shop/upgrade system works out differently because of the tiny number of items and the map-based upgrades to spend money on, the character kits have more of a shooter influence, it has a whole separate PvE game hoovering up the development budget for some reason. In general it isn't trying to be a slavish 3d copy of Dota/League. On the other hand most people seem to feel it's a lot worse than either, but...

I think Paragon is pretty mediocre, basically for the reasons explained above - you might as well be playing Dota or League which are both a lot more developed and also don't have the bits of awkwardness that result from trying to shoehorn 2d gameplay into a 3d environment. On the other hand it's a new 3-lane game, which is a fundamentally fun and good game idea, and it's not so incompetently executed that it becomes totally unenjoyable. Unless you hate 3-lane games, in which case close this thread and never come back.

Doesn't Battleborn have some kinda PvE element to it, too? I think that's the main thing there. It takes that MOBA-style "start from level 1 and build up your character again each time you have a game session" thing and puts it in co-op missions as well as competitive multiplayer. It also doesn't look like a very good game, but that's not any different from Paragon.

Orv
May 4, 2011
I was interested in seeing someone else take a more mobile crack at the SMITE paradigm, but all the videos I've seen have totally deflated any interest. There's a sorta leather badass space cowboy who is dual wielding energy pistols, except they fire like this; shot... shot... shot... shot..., and the projectiles are hella slow. This seems to be the case for all ranged characters, and all their animations, VFX and SFX are unpleasing in the extreme. The effects might get worked on but it just looks terrible to play.

I've never tried a MOBA before but I gave this a look after seeing it on the PSN store front page and it looks pretty fun, watched some streams for a few hours, but unfortunately I missed out on what was apparently some kind of bot handing out free early access codes.

Is there going to be any kind of free trial event before open beta, like a free weekend or something, or is it strictly buy in with a Founder's Pack right now. I'd like to try it on my PS4 but I really would like to see if it's for me before dropping twenty bucks.

I bought into the EA for this game because I like MOBAs until people start caring about MY MLG and I get cursed at for half an hour for not last hitting on minion.

But really it has some cool ideas, I like the harvester thing, and how "gold" spreads around if you don't last hit instead of going to Currency Hell, and other neat things. It'll be interesting to see how it goes up against Smite.

E. Didn't see it in the OP, but if you get a paragon account then you can link it to PS4 and play on either platform. In case you want to play on the couch or feel your aiming is too precise

Ended up grabbing it, they made a ton of animation improvements from the original press/YT screed and it looks and plays a lot better now. Not sure how long it'll manage to keep my interest with how fickle I am about MOBAs these days, but it has some neat ideas and the fact that it's an actual shooter vs SMITEs basically 2D aiming is a nice change.
