Ten leagues south of the large and well-established city of Verbobonc, within the Kron Hills that lie east of the Lortmil Mountains and just west of the Gnarley Forest, nestles a small settlement with a long and dark history. This unremarkable village, called Hommlet, witnessed the growth of one of the greatest centers of corruption the world would ever know: the Temple of Elemental Evil. Hommlet is a small town with a population of just under one thousand. Only twelve years ago, it was a hamlet of around one hundred people, although even then most folk referred to it as a village. Since that time, the town has enjoyed unprecedented peace and prosperity. The town is not ruled by a mayor or a town council as many others are. Instead, two ex-adventurers called Rufus and Burne have been granted control of Hommlet and its lands by the viscount of Verbobonc. Not many people in the town look at it that way, however. Most folks simply see the two men as the town “elders,” giving them the respect that they have earned. Few grumble when it comes time to pay their taxes to the two lords. Most everyone appreciates the protection Rufus and Burne’s soldiers provide, as well as the role the two played in the downfall of the original Temple of Elemental Evil (and the threats they have overcome to protect the town since then). Once the town, merely a village at the time, had been overrun with adventure and danger. Heroes rose and beat back the evil that threatened to overwhelm Hommlet. And in the years since peace has reigned. You have heard stories, and wondered about just how peaceful it really has become. Still the tales of Hommlet's peace have led to a decline in adventurers in the region. And the thought has crossed your mind that well that just means there is less competition for what challenges still remain. Each of you have your own reasons for traveling to Hommlet. Some of you may have known each other before making your way to Hommlet, and some of you simply met on the way. As you travelled the same direction you ended up traveling together, you got to know each other to a degree, depending on how much you each want to share, and now your journey is at an end. You finally spot Hommlet in the distance as the sun passes its zenith, slowly making your way to the south side of town. As the sun begins to head towards setting you finally make your way through the first couple buildings along the south road, the gravel crunching beneath your feet. As the sky darkens you begin to notice lights coming on in some of the buildings, and even the occasional burst of laughter from one or another of the buildings, likely an inn or tavern. Going to say you are coming in from the south west corner of the map, unless you wish to go around the town and come in from another direction for some reason. Please post either your character sheet or a link your sheet in your first post as you give an introduction and perhaps go over what has occured on your journey here. Standard posting conventions, italics for out of character information, your character name in bold at the top of your post, and after your initial post you should probably turn your bolded character name into a link to your first post/sheet.

Frankgrim the Crusader Frankgrim's first priority would be to pay Rufus and Burne a house-call. If they're the ones in charge in town, it'd do well to get an introduction in and let them them know that he's in town. If there's trouble afoot, Frankgrim might even be offered a job!

Vulen Inavaris "But what if whoever's in charge is covering something up?! We should be extremely cautious and keep an eye out for signs of skullduggerey," says Vulen earnestly. Background Vulen Inavaris is the latest in a long line of dragon-touched elves charged with maintaining the world's elemental balance. His parents own a seemingly small shop named 'Relics of the Four' in Verbobonc's High Quarter. If one travels all the way through the back of the shop, they will come across a vast domed meadow, sacred to the four elements. Each element has a quadrant marked by a distinct representation of that element, and the overall balance between the elements can be divined by careful study of the meadow and its changes over time. Within the shop, there are a variety of element-related magic weapons, materials, scrolls, potions, etc., many of them crafted by Vulen's parents. Vulen was too young to participate in the first crusade to cleanse the Temple of Elemental Evil, but his parents participated and haven't stopped talking about it since. For 22 years, Vulen has endured the endless reminiscing and when he heard rumors of new trouble stirring at the Temple, he practically ran out the door, confident that his parents would approve and maybe finally do a little listening to him when he returned covered in glory. pre:Forestlord Elf, Disciple (Water, Earth) Neutral neutral, Rebuke undead Alternate Class Features: Dragonscale husk STR: 14 DEX: 12 CON: 12 INT: 10 WIS: 17 (+1 at level 4) CHA: 14 HP: 30 AC: 18 = 10 + 7 armor + 1 dex Move: Walk 20' Feats Level 1: Water Devotion Level 3: Fiery Burst Skills Concentration +7 Know (Religion) +7 Spellcraft +7 Survival +7 Spells (Druid list) Level 0: Create Water, Detect Magic, Read Magic Level 1:

After a little discussion on what your first stop should be you briefly question one of the passing villagers. After a few moments you learn of a tavern and an inn. The tavern being more toward the center of town, though still a bit to the south of center, while the inn is on the other side of the river. You make your way to the east along the southern road, crossing a small bridge and then turning to the north along the road. Shortly before a second bridge you come across the Inn of The Welcome Wench. A fairly decent sized establishment, for the size of the town, with a stable attached with room for 10 horses. Looking across the river you can spot Terrigan's the tavern you were told about, though it sounds like Terrigan's doesn't serve food. 4 on the map is the Inn of the Welcome Wench, while 5 is Terrigan's.

As you make your way up to the Inn of The Welcome Wench you find an open yard, with nicely trimmed shrubbery and a soft lawn, a stable with room for ten horses should you need to house any you may have brought with you, and the front door of the Inn of the Welcome Wench. The inn looks to be nearly twenty years old, but well kept. As you open the door a bevvy of mouth watering smells assail you. Bright friendly faces, with no outright drunkenness to be seen, greet you as you enter. For the most part. Behind the bar on the far side of the room a black-haired pale-skinned half-elf woman works. One of the patrons at the bar tells a joke, her face twists with a sour look and she snaps at him, saying something that causes him to blanch. Another woman watching from near the stairs to the second floor frowns at the exchange. She turns as she notices your entrance and begins making her way to your group, the frown replaced with a welcoming smile. A man in chainmail quietly drinks a little, eating a bit of steak and kidney pie, looking as if he is waiting for someone. Two empty chairs sit across from him. He is not the only armored man sitting and drinking, a man in half-plate drinks heavily, a number of empty mugs resting before him. It seems as if he is trying to drink his sorrows away, or at least drink something away. He has the looks of him of a rough drunk, and while he hasn't started anything yet the sour barkeep glances at him occasionally,. as if keeping an eye on him should he get rowdy. A man sits near the largest concentration of patrons, listening to whatever they are talking about and occasionally taking a sip of his drink. He looks up as you enter and seems to size you up before giving a gruff nod. There is laughter, small talk, and good cheer. And then there is the music. Occasionally you witness someone wince at the music, and perhaps you do as well with the occasional wrong note on the recorder. It is a nice recorder, and the elf man playing it is finely dressed in an entertainer's garb, but his skill ... well his skill leaves much to desire. Meanwhile the woman from the stairs has finally made her way to you. "Greetings good ladies and gentlemen to the Inn of the Welcome Wench. I am Vesta Gundigoot I run this inn in my father's stead. What can I do for you?"

Vesta smiles "Welcome Adaryn. For your food needs we have a number of dishes available. As to how Hommlet fares? Fairly well. Still a few growing pains, Terrigan's still has the occasional drunken brawl after all. But not much exciting has been happened, that I have heard. Then again I don't listen to rumors." She gestures, toward the bar, a brief grimace passes her face as she watches the barkeep harangue another patron. "If all you want is a drink Maridosen at the bar can help you. If you want something more substantial you can sit at one of the tables and a server will help you." Frankgrim makes his way toward the half-plate wearing man, stopping a server on the way to order some food and drink. The server informs him of what is available, another server informs the others as they make their way to another table. You are informed there are a variety of Full Meals, each served with bread and honey, potatoes, and a choice of string beans, yams, rum-boiled artichokes, cabbage, carrots, or spinach on the side. There is also a small selection of Light Meals should you be feeling peckish but not truly hungry. The light meals don't come with the rest of the sides. The server then goes over the various full meals, light meals, and drinks available. As Frankgrim makes his way to the half-plate wearing man's table the man looks up, at first he looks as if he is going to send Frankgrim away, but when the offer of a drink is made he brusquely gestures for Frankgrim to sit. He takes a heavy gulp of ale, looks up at Frankgrim, and speaks. "What do you want? Don't tell me you just wanted my company." Vulen Inavaris After he and Adaryn have been seated, Vulen orders the boiled crawfish and a beer. He'd really prefer the vegetables with some peppered bread, but it appears that's not an option. Kayla Kayla looks around the room for a moment, then walks up to the elf man playing the so-called music. "Hey, I'll buy you a drink if you stop torturing that thing and come talk to me for a bit about anything that's going on around town." Bards, even terrible ones, often heard things. Also if he accepted her offer the terrible music would stop.

The armored man looks Frankgrim up and down, snorts, "hmph Kord." But gestures for Frankgrim to sit. When Frankgrim's drinks, and meal, arrives, the man takes a sip of the proffered drink and after a moment gives his name as "Xaod." He continues drinking for awhile, eyeing Frankgrim before shrugging. "I saw a vision of great fire and magic, of a great evil festering in the aread around the temple." He starts cursing and slams his drink on the table, earning a look from the barkeep. "I found nothing! Just some hobgoblins. I slayed a number but that can't be what called me here." He starts to brood some more, drinking more of the brandy. Kayla walks up to the bard, offering him a drink, he looks offended a bit but still carefully puts away his recorder. "I am hardly torturing it. But how can I say no to such an offer from such a ..., um a, from a lady." He falters as he gets a better look at Kayla. "I am Redithidoor Halfmoon and may I be so bold as to ask your name?" Once Kayla responds he accompanies her to a table where he orders a drink, some Sundish lilac, with the understanding that it would actually be Kayla paying. When the drink arrives he takes a small sip to wet his throat, then looks Kayla up and down. "So you wish to know what is going on around town? Not much of worth, except. Well ..." And he starts to get excited as he continues, "awhile back I was near the moathouse and I heard strange noises. Something was moving around down there! It must have been undead!" He is beginning to look almost giddy. "You are a strange one, you must be an adventurer! Perhaps if you are going to explore it you can take me along?" As Kayla is inundated by the elf's excitement the man sitting near the center of the room rises and makes his way over. He gives the bard a look and a disgruntled snort. "Adventurer worshippers." He turns to Kayla, "I heard rumors about the moathouse as well, thought there might be some treasure. But there was nothing, it was empty, no treasure, no adventure. Nothing." Meanwhile Carl found his own seat, and begins to enjoy his meal once it arrives, but he doesn't hear any rumors that really stand out. At least not yet.

As the group goes about getting ready to settle down two more men enter the Inn, they look around and spot the older man sitting quietly and drinking. One is dressed well in robes, the other dressed well with some military accoutrements. They make the way to the man's table and join him, ordering something to drink, and eat. They then settle in for some quiet conversation. The group pays for their rooms, some taking the nicer suites, others simply paying for a bed in the common room. They settle down for the night. For some the night passes quickly, for others they are kept up by conversations, or excitement. But eventually all fall asleep and the night passes without incident. The main room seems much emptier this morning, others seem to be either staying in their own homes, up and about their business already, or sleeping in. Though the group spots one, really ugly, little man. At first he almost looks like a goblin, but closer look suggests just a really, really, ugly halfling.
