Why are there three women in that pic? Forster is obviously England's best keeper, but I'm glad it'll be Hart.

A fully fit Pooney is the 4th best English striker in the Prem, and the ~30th best midfielder if that's how Roy wants to shoehorn him into the team.

Jack Cork should be going as backup to Dier because he's a nice lad who tries hard and specialises in that exact job unlike international holding midfielders Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley and Jonjo Shelvey.

Monday Bandele posted:This raises a question about international football that I don't know the answer to - is it better to pick a squad based on the last three months of form or a squad that you've been shaping together across years of qualifiers and friendlies? Trying to develop players and a team at national level is dumb. Any manager interested in that kind of thing should go find a club. For years England have been obsessed with introducing young players with "potential" into the national side, and now they're all still getting picked despite not being able to get into their club sides all season. It can help when all the players know each other and are used to playing with one another, but it's still better to have quality players, and the countries with tiny player pools like Wales and Iceland would trade all that togetherness for as many top flight players as England have in a heartbeat.

sweek0 posted:It's obviously not that black and white but I would say that team togetherness is as important as quality of individual players. Obviously you need both, but there have been plenty of examples of well managed national teams without superstars outperforming teams studded with stars. Usually when the "stars" are all past it or out of form or were big and strong for an 18 year old so everyone assumed they had potential to become a great footballer. Half the England team peaked at 20.
