So my mom got a litter of kittens and the mom from a bad situation and we've got them over the kitty colds they had and have now come up against ringworm. We've never dealt with ringworm before, in cats or kittens and I'm looking for some advice on the baths that were going to start doing twice a week. I want to minimize the stress to the kittens and hopefully as a byproduct minimize my own blood loss. They're somewhere around 2 months old now and around 2.5lbs so they're still pretty small but they've really gained a lot of strength if they are inclined to use it. So I'm looking for advice, the shampoo the vet gave us is Miconahex and were advised to let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing.

So whats the best way to do this? Use the sink and do them one at a time? Fill a bucket in the tub and use a cup to dump water on all of them and shampoo them up together and just let them mewl for 10 minutes? The instructions from the vet don't say anything about the mother cat but she needs to be included in the treatment too right?

I checked out https://www.kittenlady.org/ringworm but it doesn't go into a lot of detail on how precisely to best bathe a litter. The Kitten Lady also emphasizes sanitizing their area daily but right now these guys are in a spare bedroom with quite a bit of stuff, 2 couches, a king size bed, a couple of area rugs. Its too much to really clean super well daily. Is it enough to vacuum what we can and find a sanitizer spray that wont ruin the couches/carpet? I think they could probably get out of a pen that's 2-3ft high. Also confirming that orange cats are big. Our orange kitten has poo poo luck, the cold seemed to hit him hardest, he has a heart murmur and the ringworm looks the worst on him but he's still bigger than the rest of the litter.

Anyway, I know ya'll wanna see em so here they are:

And the suspected ring worm:

hoo.

you are gonna have a handsful experience either way and :rip: your hands you are gonna get clawed, just accept it now and embrace your scars.

i mean i would do it in all one fell swoop assuming you have someone to help you. maybe not momma cat at the same time because older cats are way more of a PITA. if possible is there any way of sectioning off the room to make "clean" and "not clean" areas?

either way its going to be a ginormous pain in the rear end either way you do it but good luck :unsmith:

Cat of Wealth and Taste

You may want to invest in rubber gloves, booties for when you're in the kitten room, etc. Ringworm is hella contagious, will spread to everything, and can infect YOU as well as anyone else, human or animal, in the house.

If you get a cheap handheld blacklight you can usually see it on their fur, the fungus will glow a bit. Cleaning them and then putting them back into a room that isn't clean will just cycle it, get used to swapping any bedding and mega-sanitizing your wash. I'd strongly suggest covering any furniture with something removable/washable.

Ringworm is no joke, it may take a couple months to stomp out so patience and perseverance is key.

So the first bath with the Ringwormy kittens went super well, they just kind of went limp when they got a couple cups of water on them and were content to be swaddled in towels while lathered and again while drying. I'm am worried about the room they are in getting cleaned well enough but I did get a lot of the random pillows/chairs and crap out of the room and got the couches covered and vacuumed. It's a pain though because I don't know of a cleaner that will work for ringworm and be safe for the cats AND be safe to use on wood floors AND be safe to use on rugs. Just gonna keep workin at it and hope its enough.

I've got a black light and some Rescue on the way, hopefully I'll be able to use that on the floor/rugs. I'll get some wet kitten pics next bath, they are so pathetic it both breaks my heart and makes me laugh.

He only turns blue in the sun(and the auto filter on Photos)

carpet steam cleaner would deal with your fabrics. hardwood floor would just be an antibacterial disinfectant if its decently varnished. they are looking nice though. glad you didnt get eaten by kittens, their claws are little pain razors.

They play like this together every night- it looks crazy rough but neither of them are actually fighting, they're both just insane cats with LOADS of playful energy (part of the reason we adopted Ajna in the first place was so Persephone would have someone to burn that energy on that wasn't us).

Got a little feral baby to socialise. She's been here about 24 hours so far and isn't thrilled, no hisses but she freezes up and tries to ooze away. She should be about 12 weeks old but her size feels more like a 9 week old to me, but she's cowering a lot so maybe that's why. I'll try weighing her later when I give her another look over.

She's eating well but won't eat around me yet, despite my chicken babyfood offerings. I'll give her a bit more time to settle in, but it's killing me. I need kitten snuggles!

Her sibling went missing weeks ago, a neighbour might have scooped her (that's what I'm assuming for my sanity). Mom has eluded capture so far but she keeps coming back so we'll nab her and get her spayed.

She's been crying at night which is breaking my heart, I've gotta work out a better overnight solution for her than the xl dog kennel but she's determined to make herself a tiny ball in the hardest to reach spots if we let her loose.

Is "grab and pet briefly" for de-feralizing kittens (not cats!) still advised? I've heard some rescuers say in the past that it gets the kitten over the initial fear of Big Scary Thing Will Eat Me and more in the mindset of Big Petting Thing Will Pet Me I Guess, but obviously if that doesn't happen you've made things worse vs. just taking it slower and allowing the kitten to accept you at their own pace.

Idk about briefly. I follow the Kitten Lady method, where there's tons of food involved and tons and carrying the kitten around.

I just got up to take a piss and Kenan and Kelly both followed me into the bathroom, as they always do when I don’t shut the door first. I opened the lid — both kittens running around my feet — and got ready to do my thing, when suddenly Kelly jumped up into the toilet and, in so doing, discovered that TOILET FULL OF WET and promptly ran out of the room.

Kenan just kinda sat there wondering :wtc: just happened.

Don't know about kittens, but for feral adults the advice I've heard (and practiced) is to get them used to you just being in the room at first, then to gradually lure them out with food and toys until they get used to humans being friendly and approachable.

Cats who actually enjoy being picked up are fairly rare, and that's after they're socialized. Grabbing a feral cat or kitten sounds like a recipe for trauma to both you and the cat.

yeah i would go with this option, just read a book or do something around the cat but basically ignore it unless it decides to investigate you. building a foundation of trust takes time.

Dealing with a street kitten vs cat is pretty different. I agree that with an adult cat you absolutely do not want to rush, and some cats never want to really be social, but kittens under a certain age are a totally different beast. This applies to kittens who are still fairly dependent on their mother - most rescues say 5-7 weeks is the ideal window, since that's between weaning and hunting, but really it extends much further than that if you've got some spare time to dedicate to it. Kittens can't hold out eating like adult cats, they are SUPER food driven and that's your opening.

A lot of kittens will just wolf down whatever you put in front of them, right in front of you as soon as you let them out of the trap. This one was quite a bit older and resisted a bit for nearly 24 hours, only eating when the house was quiet and I was far away, but she still cracked pretty quick. She started eating in front of me, and then 20 minutes later was eating chicken baby food off a long handled spoon that I was holding. After that it's just a matter of escalation. Once they realise food comes from you, you're in. You increase closeness, talking, touching, and as long as they don't stop eating you can just push forward. Eventually they'll just sit in your lap if that's where the food is.

Plus with kittens you gotta wash the fleas off, and then weigh them at least daily, and then a ton of them get the rescue URI (or already have one) and need eye cream... You really can't avoid handling them for long. I actually had to warm this little girl a bunch after a bath because she got really chilled, and I thought that would set us WAY back, but once she warmed up she was like "humans... have heating pads?" and became my best friend. THAT is not something I would vouch for doing at all, I made a bunch of mistakes planning out her bath and learned from it.

This is totally a common way to do it, it's really easy and they'll be totally on board for the whole journey :3: There are lots of little details like limiting which way your hand approaches them and stuff, and providing a balance of a hidey spot that isn't totally hidden, but honestly it's just mostly about the food. Bring yummy stinky food, get super friendly kittens.
