LivesInGrey posted:I just woke up to feed the Sailor Kittens and found Mars dead in the bottom of their cage. He was fine a few hours ago before I went to bed, so I have no idea what could have happened unless it was related to him generally not growing as well as his siblings. I'm so sorry. Sometimes kittens just don't thrive, unfortunately, or have some congenital issue that only shows up like this; I don't think there's anything you could have done.

Be careful: cats will expand to 105% of their available volume of bed/roost/cardboard box. It may take a while, but it'll happen.

ZoeDomingo posted:What I know I'm looking for: I also recommend finding a shelter with colony rooms or other environments where you can interact with the cats prior to adoption, because that's a really good way to get a feel for them and see if they like/are interested in you. They're not always completely accurate -- when we hung out in the colony room with our cat, she was more interested in the picture window than humans, but at home she's really clingy and affectionate -- but they're a lot better than just walking by cages and sticking a hand in. Take your time and get to know the cats; don't feel like you have to adopt the first time you go, or from the first place you go to. Good luck!

Yeah, I don't have any firsthand experience, but I've heard that nursing mother cats will generally accept and care for kittens other than their litter, presumably because of cast social organization in the wild being big ol' cat piles. Trying to find a nursing foster mom seems like a good idea.

It sounds like things ended better for her than they could have (being taken in by a family and living a decent life), but she's still a cat you lost, so I think it's okay to mourn her, especially knowing for sure that she's passed. Just feel whatever you feel about it; it's okay.

Mine is "here comes Meyer, he's a berserker" sung to the tune of that weird little song from the end of Clerks. I should probably switch which cat I sing it to, given that Meyer has gotten downright polite and Rosie's the twenty-pound battering ram of enthusiasm, but old habits die hard.

We've adopted three shelter cats now, and two of them (Luke and Meyer) have kept their names. The other one came to us as "Liz," which was the name of several human acquaintances and my boyfriend's ex, so she became Rosemary in pretty short order. A friend of ours adopted a "Simba," which also didn't last long, and her brother adopted a "Luna" who turned out to be a boy, so... name changes all around.

I want to hug Peaches and Pie so bad. I love that fat-cat turnaround move; my parents' tuxedo, who is a weird perma-kitten in frame but has gotten chunkier as he's aged, does it with a kitchen nook all the time and it's amazing to watch.

I've been camped out on the guest room bed since I put his food down and managed to see him eating, but the second he saw me he froze and backpedaled under the bed. He probably just needs time, but I suspect the best thing to do here would just be to hang around the room while pointedly not interacting with or looking at him; basically, just be an non-threatening presence and let him get acclimated to you. He may be a little too nervous to be getting a lot out of positive attention yet.

How long has he been meowing and scratching? Everything I've heard about this has suggested that this behavior dies out eventually once the cat realizes it's not going to get results. I wish I had more advice to give (our cats can take or leave our bed and don't mind being closed out), but you have my sympathy. I really hope you can work something out.

This isn't technically about a foster cat, just our regular idiot, but because the subject came up: what do people recommend for bathing cats with butt problems? We need to get our long-haired moron in for a proper sanitary clip, but we want to get her cleaned up beforehand. Are there particular soaps for this, or do we just want a lot of warm water and time?

We have a friend who gives her cat either Prozac or Valium (I can't remember which) via a cream she rubs into her cat's ears, as prepared by a local compounding pharmacy. It's worked pretty well for calming down an anxious cat and seems to have helped with cat aggression, too. I'd definitely pursue meds as an option; they may not work, but they're worth a try.

We've been in touch with them and he's currently in a good foster home and will soon be up for adoption. We actually do have some friends now that have surfaced who may be up for adopting him through their agency. So, not as fun/ideal but still pretty good! This may not be as perfect as the Butterscotch Oreo cat pile up there, but it sounds like Monty's in a good place too. You've done well by your cats and I'm glad to hear things are working out.
