I got to enjoy something like this in my window this year, except it was a wasp nest instead of a squirrel nest. After a few weeks the queen wasp learns to recognize you're not a big deal and then everyone is cool with it.

Phlegmish posted:I have to say this is somewhat less cute, but good on you for making friends with the wasps When the cool season comes in, the nest's foundresses all disperse to find places to hibernate, so it's possible I may see one of my wasps again next spring, but it seems unlikely. They were pretty cute IMO, though. At night they would all cluster onto their little nest to sleep, and I had a number break-ins earlier in the year, where a few of the wasps were finding a way in through gaps in the old window framing. Because the wasps saw me all the time, it was no problem to lure them onto a wooden spoon for a honey snack before letting them back outside, but it turns out that paper wasps are fairly smart so I just kept getting the same wasps coming in every day for treats. I ended up patching the gaps, but I've heard that if you're serious about it, paper wasps can be tamed enough to hold and let you touch their nest.
