My wife ran one before I met her, and its apparently incredibly challenging. Hard to find a vet, hard to get licensed(you have to be USDA Certified, like beef!).

Then you get hundreds dumped on you at once because the feds raided a breeder and any that you can't take in immediately will be destroyed.

IIRC, Great Pyrenees is one of those dog breeds that desperately needs and wants to work, so I hope you have a farm.

everything i have read and experienced says this is wrong. they are guardian dogs, but are perfectly happy guarding the family, and only need half an hour or an hour of exercise. they do better with a yard, and are great being put to use at what they were bred for, but its not like a corgi where they go nuts.

they will bark quite a bit tho.

Cold blooded is a bit of a misnomer. Reptiles are still exothermic, meaning their metabolic processes still generate heat. They just don't produce as much as mammals due to their lower metabolism, and they have fewer built-in mechanisms for regulating that heat. As a result, they rely to a greater extent on their environment to maintain a comfortable body temperature.

If anything, a sweater might do more to keep a snake warm, because they don't have the
same bag of tricks we humans do to help us stay a nice and toasty 98.6° (or 37 degrees Celsius if you live in a civilized country).

the correct temp for a human is 558.27 °R

that gets out of hand with like 2 cats, and most cat people seem to have at least 2

Synthbuttrange posted:

As the raging California wildfires encroached upon Roland Handel's home, he had to make a split-second decision — try to force his dog Odin into the car, or leave him behind.

Odin is one of two great Pyrenees who take turns guarding the family's eight goats from coyotes and mountain lions, and he was on duty the night the fires broke out.

"At night, Odin won't leave the goats," Handel told As It Happens host Carol Off. "When I approached, he sat down in front of the goats, and I know that look. He wasn't moving."

With flames racing towards his property, he said there was no time to load the goats into a trailer.

"I had my 14-year-old daughter and we had to get out," he said between sobs.

So he opened the gates so the animals could flee, then drove off with his daughter, their three other dogs and two cats all packed into the family car.

"The cars behind us on the road had fire pouring out of the windows just minutes after we left," he said. "It was life and death."

It wasn't until he got his daughter to safety that he was able to really process that he'd left Odin behind.

"We were hoping somehow they were OK, that some miracle happened," he said.

He returned the next day, circumventing roadblocks to get there.

He discovered that his home and everything else on his property was completely destroyed.

Except for Odin, who was there waiting for him — with all eight goats.

Odin survived with all eight goats. 'He didn't lose a single one,' his owner said.

"I couldn't believe it," Handel said. "Everything else is gone. There's nothing."

Odin ran up to him and showered him with kisses, he said. The dogs paw pads were burnt and his bright white fur was singed orange.

"He looked small and he was limping. He was lying down a lot. He was clearly exhausted."

I read somewhere that some scientists are seriously wondering just how smart octopodes could get if they had longer lifespans. They're so alien that it's tough to get a handle on them as it is.

I read an article late last year about a colony that had formed where they were teaching the octokids. This isn't a thing that happened before because they are normally solitary and die after giving birth. We could be seeing the rise of the octolords!

A bit meta, but what is it about puppies/kittens that taps into our brain chemistry? I know the obvious answer is it must be similar to human children or at least be in the same area of the brain releasing chemicals.

But why don't we just watch videos of human kids and get the same response? I'm a not a parent and I will happily entertain my parent friends (obviously) and I think kids can be cute but I would never type "baby videos" into youtube in the same way I do with dogs and cats.

Why is that?

Getting high on oxytocin. :swoon: (thanks for the video)

I'm still puzzled at why other peoples kids don't have the effect though.

Because we are wired to see other peoples babies as a potential threat to our own. Other peoples babies consume resources that would benefit our own, and therefor are not to be protected like our own. We aren't wired to actively kill them simple because you don't kill off the herd.
