One thing he drilled into our heads: a moving train cannot "just stop". I would get that if it was up to speed. But it had already slowed down to "a" mile an hour for the dog. Might as well just stop and run it off. But if even then it's not that simple then just hop off while it's running, walk briskly forward, and run the dog off.
