So back in 2011 Relic Entertainment and the now-defunct THQ released Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Retribution, a stand-alone expansion to 2009's Dawn of War II. Featuring a wonderful (if short) co-op-enabled campaign, hilariously-unbalanced multiplayer, and an unending stream of buggy gameplay, Retribution was an enjoyable take on the old RTS formula. So why am I talking about a 5 year old game? Well, in addition to singleplayer and the competitive multiplayer modes, Retribution also had The Last Stand, a 3-player survival mode where you controlled a single powerful hero and tried your damnedest to make it through 20 waves of various units from the game's six factions. Compounding this is the addition of a simple leveling system, giving your hero of choice access to shiny loot and alternate playstyles. The strange blend of Gauntlet-style arcade gameplay with Dota-ish controls made the mode popular enough that Relic released DLC for it and eventually created a standalone version of the game mode on Steam. Now fast-forward to 2016, five years (and a publisher switch) later we get this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5jUX28SBnQ DLC character out of freakin' nowhere along with some patches for a half-decade-old game. The Necron Overlord brings in a lot of neat toys for his loadout, allowing him to fulfill a super-tanky support/crowd control role with a ton of lime-flavored particle effects spreading death everywhere. The update has boosted the playercount, and for the moment it's actually easy to find a game during peak hours. Aaand on top of that, a mod for the game finally made a public release as of yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3A8R2QxQ2A Some mod author posted:Last Stand: Forgotten Emerald In short, the mod remixes the first 10 waves of the Colosseum map, and adds a ton of new gear/gameplay changes to the Space Marine Captain, Lord General, and the Chaos Sorceror (whose now just a straight-up Champion). Suddenly, a bunch of dead-weight characters and gear are suddenly really fun to play with! Put on some techmarine armor and poo poo turrets all over the map! Engineering not your style? Fly around with a giant hammer (that isn't garbage) and go bowling for guardsmen! The Lord General gets a makeover (totally not his head pasted to a Commissar body), a ton of weapons, and a snazzy hat! Oh and your guardsmen are accessories now, which can lead to the arena becoming a touch crowded: As for Chaos? You can become a legit Noise Marine. Kill enemies with the power of metal. Nuff said. Well, I GUESS you be a Nurgle-based shitlord and poop goo puddles all over the map and deliberately root teammates to the ground leading to their untimely deaths NO I AM NOT MAD ...Or you can all be lazy rear end in a top hat space marines and hole up inside a building with heavy weapons until the entire facade collapses in on you because you had no plans for what to do about a human wave of warp spiders: Best of all, the mod is relatively stable, works with the game's default matchmaking, and there's even a decent pubbie population. That said, goons are typically waay better at being awful in videogames, so if anyone wants to dive back into some TLS madness feel free to hit up my Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/ChickenHeart/ Bonus old Dawn of War Goons Steam Group that's been dead since 2012: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/dawngoons

I have these games and just never played them. They are still sitting right here on my shelf in there case. Should I play them then do this new thing? Or just plow ahead? Also, Windows 10 gonna do the job for the original game?

The new update's really got me playing again, mostly with my brother. We've been doing the campaigns, Last Stand, and I even convinced him to play against people. I've also reinstalled the competitive Elite mod, and hopefully I can get a few games out of that as well because I really dig its changes and additions. As for Last Stand itself, the Necron dude is so hilariously broken. I currently have him built with both the item that gives back all life and energy when he first hits zero, and if he dies again he'll resurrect in a few seconds. Unfortunately this has made the last wave in the "easier" map literally unwinnable, at least with the matchups I've gotten. Anyway, that LS mod looks really cool, and I hope it gains traction with the community. Especially if they end up making new maps for the mode. 504 posted:I have these games and just never played them. They are still sitting right here on my shelf in there case. They should all work fine and as for whether you should play them, it depends what you're looking for. The DOW2 and Chaos Rising campaigns are better regarded that Retribution's, but you can only play as the Space Marines in them. But if you're only interested in Last Stand and/or PVP then just install the latest game. Mordja fucked around with this message at 16:10 on Mar 28, 2016 |

Pretty amazing to put out an update like this out of nowhere. I used to really enjoy 2v2 and 1v1 in this for some reason, playing as the ork commando was always a good laugh despite all the imbalances. Definitely going to give Last Stand a whirl again, it was a great way to kill half an hour back when it first came out.

So do the heroes in that Last Stand mod have their own levels or does it take from the regular game?
