PantsBandit posted:How well has Donkey Kong Country aged? I'm thinking of purchasing it using my New Nintendo 3DS. I still like it but I've heard enough people say it looks bad and plays bad to say you should probably just try it to see for yourself. Or perhaps even wait for the second one if it's not already on 3DS since it's the favorite.

I remember getting to one of the later levels in Catherine, and I had screwed up somewhere and it was too late to backpedal, so I started just pushing random blocks and got the entire stage to drop which caused the game to literally stop and have to chug until it could get the blocks to drop. To its credit it never crashed and eventually went back to normal after they all fell.

Like they're not masterclass games or anything and are a bit unremarkable in parts since they're clearly inspired by other games but it's still fun the way they're put together. There's also a secret boss in the first game which is a skeleton with a top hat and a cane.

Iron Keep is still my least favorite area, just because they threw way too many of those Alonne Knights in there and they just sort of teleport to you so you can't run past them. That's still the only boss run in the entire series where I couldn't find a route to just run to the boss. That's the other thing that goes against the "these games are super hard" thing, when you know an area you can typically run past every enemy because you know where they are and how to avoid them.

How the original Deus Ex handles it's multiple choice ending is really loving cool. You get to the final area and keep getting handed different objectives by the multiple factions in the game, and if you start doing an objective for one faction the others start yelling at you to change your mind which you can totally do up until you finish one.

The only thing that bothers me in old school localization is just stuff that was unclear but that's less about "CENSORSHIP!" and more about the fact that I would have liked to know that you can cancel the super attack the Masamune boss in Chrono Trigger has with the Slash move, a fact that was not even alluded to in the SNES game but made perfect sense in the DS version. Oh, and also that bullshit where they would change the difficulty for the US release. You've got stuff on one end like Final Fantasy IV where they made it easier, and then stuff like Bayou Billy and Castlevania 3 where they made it a ton harder.

If FF5 ever came out that would've been even worse, if the PSX version was any indication. As I recall from an ancient Official Playstation magazine article, at one point the entire script of FFV was accidentally replaced with the translation office's emails for the past month or something like that. I need to lookup that issue, a lot of stuff about the PS1 FFV makes sense after I remembered reading that.
