Why is it that Canada is so terrible and backwards when it comes to Internet and cellphones? ISP data capping is fairly rare here in the states (for now at least).

Because the two telecom companies in canada are colluding to keep prices high/ shut other companies out and the commission that oversees them is brutally corrupt.

All ISPs are going to cap the poo poo out of connections or just jack up the price to make up for lost TV revenue.

Why would it do that!?
I think I'm a good winner from that grandfathering thing. Three gave me a good deal (but some poo poo phones) with an unlimited data contract a few years ago so I'm kept on an unlimited data SIM deal for £15 a month.

The fun part is that there used to be an even better deal which was something like unlimited calls, texts and minutes for something like £20 a month, but they recently started sending letters that they're cancelling those deals, but not to worry as they can just buy other plans instead. Costing £45 (30 now it seems) Sucks to be them! I'm sure it won't happen to me next

Raising pups yourself is an 8+-week poo poo job (because they poo poo everywhere, get it?) but it pays off bigtime when you can sell them for $800-1500 a head and litters are anywhere from 5-12 pups so you end up making thousands. Having a purebred stud (which I sadly no longer do) is basically a free windfall whenever one of the neighborhood breeders' bitches goes into heat. I would pimp him out for $100/day and sometimes he'd be out the full two weeks.

Also I love my dogs. They're hard workers and loyal pals and only occasionally murder my hens and local wildlife.

EDIT: on the other hand, I spend upwards of $100/wk on dog food alone

No, the nature of capitalism is a tendency towards monopoly/oligopoly and erecting barriers to entry, competition is enforced by laws and regulation.

Never really took off. I don't know if it was an engineering thing or what because that p much makes your data cypher the most conductive groundpath in the infrastructure.

Sure, there is competition for Internet in the US but in reality only one company has run cables past your place, so it does work out to being a monopoly. Google Fibre is getting so much thrown in their way because they're going to run their cables past everyone's house and introduce the thing that isn't a monopoly: healthy competition!

Of course they'll be little shits about it and magically increase speeds, decrease prices, improve service but it'll magically only be where Google Fibre runs.

This same sort of competition happened in Wellington, New Zealand in the late '90s. A new company ran cables through one part of town. Magically everyone in that area had a deal that was magically $10 cheaper than anywhere else in the entire country. That's right. EVERYONE in New Zealand could get the $49/mo plan EXCEPT for people in the area that offered Saturn where it was AMAZINGLY $39/mo. Incredible stuff!

So that's what you'll see where Google Fibre enters the market.

PS, 1 GBPS with no monthly cap is $39/mo ... about $30 USD. Competition is awesome and the fact broadband is so poo poo in the US shows you don't have real competition. Sucks to be you!

Where does it say this? I don't doubt it but I have been searching and I don't see anything about it.

They'd have a lot of balls though; anywhere that FiOS exists so does another cable option. Cablevision for example does not cap home broadband connections.

Though I have heard from a bunch of Verizon employees that they regret getting into the cable/TV/internet business and they won't be expanding. No idea if it's true though.
