And Armisen did any number of Prince Show sketches. Gonna be interesting to see how they pad out the rest of the special. It would be great to have decent quality recordings of the 81 & 89 performances. He was originally booked for the 1995 season premiere, but flaked out during the week. Blues Traveler took his place. David Spade referenced the Purple One a couple weeks later during his "Spade In America" segment, calling out Prince. Will that make it into the show tonight? They put phone camera footage on national television for six minutes. Such is the power of Prince. This was a good call, doing this show. It was the first time I'd seen those '81 and '89 performances in anything better than 17th-generation VHS dub quality.

I think it was somewhat appropriate that Fallon hosted the special, simply because his obnoxious enthusiasm actually fit the situation, for once. It kind of illustrates how insincere his manic energy comes across most of the time. He acts the same way talking about Prince showing up to an SNL afterparty as he does to something, like, playing beer pong with Taylor Swift or some poo poo.

May lineup: 05.07: Brie Larson/Alicia Keys; Vintage ehhh kinda 05.14: Drake; Vintage yes 05.21: Fred Armisen/Courtney Barnett; Vintage ehhh kinda The finale may be my fault, as I was wondering the other day if Fred would ever host. I'm sorry The first and third weeks, there is hockey scheduled until 10:30, and then joining an SNL Vintage in-progress. Not likely to be a first-run, but rather a repeat (Richard Pryor and Tom Hanks '90 have been contingency eps in the past.)
