I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this.

I actually found them rather unsympathetic throughout, and it doesn't help that the game forced you to kill all the enemies (I also read the gryphon ride as 'they rode that beast until it died collapsed'). It makes sense in a fairy tale world, but that reading falls down at the end - you can't easily combine a world where the protagonists always live and their enemies always die with the permanent death of a major character to lend emotional weight and drama. It was a pretty fantastically depicted fairy tale world, however.
