for real though, the basic idea of this thread is to just get people to watch shows from a decade ago that might have slipped through the cracks. some of these shows are super famous and still relevant today, some of them had fandoms at the time but have been mostly forgotten, and half these shows were things nobody even realized existed until just now. However, none of those are judgments of quality. Explore! Be bold! Discuss them in the thread! I'll just ask that you don't spoil the ending to zegapain on page 1 or something. Feel free to give your opinions on more obscure shows you might have watched, just don't turn it into a plot recap.

If any of these are up on streaming sites, please tell me and I'll break the timeline to add it to the OP.

Oh crap, Oban was 2006? That series was a legit family drama with various bit of racing. Would recommend.

Utawa "Underwater Ray Romano" rerumono was also a good watch. That was a nice political wartime anime.

Life isn't easy in feudal Japan... especially since the aliens landed and conquered everything! Oh sure, the new health care is great, but the public ban on the use of swords has left a lot of defeated samurai with a difficult decision to make concerning their future career paths! This is especially true if, as in the case of Gintoki Sakata, they're not particularly inclined towards holding a day job, which is why Gintoki's opted for the freelance route, taking any job that's offered to him as long as the financial remuneration sounds right. Unfortunately, in a brave new world filled with stray bug-eyed monsters, upwardly mobile Yakuza and overly ambitious E.T. entrepreneurs, those jobs usually don't pay as well as they should for the pain, suffering and indignities endured!

Wait, was this the very first season of Gintama? I need to lie down...

I definitely remember watching some of those...

Ah! My Goddess: Terrible, manga was better
ARIA The Natural: Super great
Higurashi: Well, it was neat at the time at least. IMO worthless to watch now with the games coming out on Steam.
Jyu-oh-sei: The OP/ED is rad and the setting is kind of cool but it ends on a wet fart.
Nana: I liked it but it made me so angry!! Also will never ever be finished, the mangaka got sick or died or something.
Ouran: :yeah:
Saiunkoku Monogatari: I remember really liking this! But the fansubs kept getting delayed and I fell way behind. It had some very interesting politics going on.
Simoun: Really weird premise but it was also quite compelling, I remember liking it a decent amount.
Haruhi: It's Haruhi.
Utawarerumono: The ending of this one is so dumb I'd say it's not worth it.
Zegapain: Green sparkles everywhere, also the ending was pretty good IIRC.

I think School Rumble was one of the most disappointing franchises I ever got moderately invested in, the anime started out so fun and I was convinced it was going to be as big as Azumanga at the time. Then the manga never went anywhere interesting and everyone stopped caring.

i watched Princess Princess ten years ago hoping the boys would kiss

the show really didn't leave an impression and i don't really remember much? i think it was more slice of life-y than a romcom and there was surprisingly/disappointingly little gay undertones for the premise, but maybe i am just misremembering the show who knows

Not a cute boy, just a boring girl.
Ouran is real good but I feel like someone really needs to endorse Simoun so it doesn't get overlooked. It's general execution could have used some work and maybe a little extra elaboration in some areas, but it has some really strong beats and has a pretty unique flavor to it in large part due to the huge divergence from how sex and gender work in the real world. The description is actually a little misleading about what the show is about I feel. In the grand scheme, just trying to get the Simoun to work with the new pair is actually not all that interesting in itself. The main overarching war plot conflict is more of a vehicle or scaffolding to explore the world building and the light sprinkling of metaphor going over the entire piece. It's really more of a character piece about gender and growing up in a fairly serious and somber way (there's even a couple rather sad if not tragic events in this vein) than it is about the fighting or some generic "THE PASSION OF YOUTH" deal.

There's a lot of things on there I know i watched but barely remember. Kamisama Kazoku, Love Get Chu, Tokko, Yume Tsukai (i remember the art in this was pretty and trippy, but gently caress if i can recall anything that happened). Joshikousei was okay (its on crunchy as Girl's High), and I liked Strawberry Panic despite it being kind of trashy and both major romances turning out exactly the same. The Third was pretty cool. Aria owns. I liked the setting of Simoun but found it extremely boring.

Yeah, it is not particularly exciting or action packed outside of a couple short arcs. That's probably a good way to summarize my main gripe with it. It is different and kind of artsy in a way that I think merits at least considering watching though.

I would think that Strawberry Panic would resonate very well with chat thread readers as it feels very much as if the writer watched Marimite (a yuri show that's all subtext) then went, "wait, thats the end? None of those girls made out! WHAT THE gently caress", then set out to fix that by making a very clear clone of it in which they do make out a lot

Did I just say that out loud~~?!!!
Watch Oban Star Racers, you guys. It's a little-known series created by a French studio (actually, the director, Savin Yeatman-Eiffel, is a great-grandson of the man who designed the Eiffel Tower!) partnering with a Japanese studio. With shows like Avatar The Last Airbender and Teen Titans sort of dominating the Western anime-influenced trend in the 'noughts, OSR got sort of lost, but it's extremely well-written and the races are exciting and interesting. The art style is also very unique and appealing. If you like Wakfu, do give Oban Star Racers a try!

Oh wow Inukami brings back memories.

I haven't watched it in ages, I'm not sure how well it holds up but that was a pretty funny show back in 2006.

It's a raunchy sex comedy with fights sometimes, but you'd never get that from the OP pretending to be a serious show.

I'm mildly tempted to revisit Utawaramono to see how it holds up after the mediocre mess of a second season, but I probably shouldn't...

The flameout of School Rumble will be forever baffling, on the basis that the author could have just picked an ending from a dartboard and it would have been 100% better than what we got.

Simoun was a series I really like in some ways, but in others you can't quite call it good. When I rewatched it recently I noticed "oh wait, this is a DEEN show and boy is it obvious." The character art is kinda real bad. The plot can be strangely paced.

But it's probably the best example ever of a series taking a very out-there premise and going "that's just the way it is, we're not going to hold this society up against CURRENT YEAR morality, deal with it."

Is this thread for 2006 specifically, or is it for underappreciated older series in general? I'd been thinking about making a thread for the latter, but :effort:.

The ending of School Rumble was just fine and is one of the very few times in the history of anime/manga where the Best Girl actually wins.

Yoshimune has: a cute ninja, a cute princess, a cute robot, whiskey in edo-era japan, matron lady that goes OHOHOHOHOHO or EHIHIHIHIHIHI every ten seconds, a shogun that rides around the hallways of his palace on a motorcycle, that thing where they say the show name at the start and end of the commercial break, very silly trance soundtrack. The main character sounds familiar too.

It's a cute show all around because everything is done in a chibi style, the animation isn't super strong but theres nothing to worry about either, I really like the environments though.

I saw episode 1 and I'm gonna try to find the rest. It wasn't supremely funny but was compelling and had some feels and got some laughs out of me.

The ED is really really good and starts with a big kabuki YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
