They also did Extreme Ghostbusters, which is probably a hard sell just for the title even before you see the diverse bunch of kids including the guy in the wheelchair (who is the team jock) but is actually a lot of fun, too. I think they also did The Big Guy and Rusty The Boy Robot, which is also technically an adaptation, though of a pretty obscure comic.

Godzilla: The Series gets funny because they didn't have any rights to other kaiju, so they created a lot of new ones including clear counterparts to classic ones. (Coming to mind a giant yeti that's probably a King Kong riff, and the original 97 Zilla resurrected as an alien cyborg as the show's version of Mechagodzilla) Also there's a robot buddy that gets wrecked every episode. And a trio of mercenary monster hunters clearly riffing on King of the Hill.

The MiB cartoon was the same studio. All three had a similar art style, come to think of it.

Artist Fil Barlow worked on all three series(and Extreme Ghostbusters and Big Guy & Rusty also by Adelaide Productions) and has a very distinct style

Yeah, Extreme Ghostbusters tried to go for the spookier feel of earlier Real Ghostbusters cartoons (or the ones for syndication). They even had an episode with basically the Cenobites. Look up 'Deadliners' for the curious. Only thing that really held it back was a very low animation budget.

I forgot how fun vs Gigan is. sucks that they went right back to the formula after how loving rad Hedorah was, but it's still a well structured entry

my kid's got like three Showa era left and we'll probably watch Destroy All Monsters at least twice more before then.

"destroy all monsters!?" he says, "the people are destroying the monsters, and the monsters are destroying each other?!?!"

Vs. Gigan was a big one for me as a kid because Anguirus is my favorite after the big guy and he gets a lot to do (even if he did a lot of it before in Destroy All Monsters) plus as a young wrestling fan Gigan and Ghidorah are a great heel tag team.

OK!

Those are pretty much my exact reasons for loving it as a kid too. Plus, Godzilla bleeds in it (epic!), there's a cool Godzilla theme park ran by cockroach aliens! It's neat

The seventies films are all trying to make the best of ridiculously limited resources (and Toho saying "we have to keep making these, nothing else is working"), so they have a certain charm. Gigan being a cool-rear end monster helps too.

Gigan is one of those monster designs that on paper seems like it shouldn't work* but the execution of it manages to thread the needle in a way that he feels like a natural fit even though he's a giant cyborg space chicken

*like when you compare Gigan to most of Toho's other Showa era Movie Kaiju he's a real oddball(only really outdone by fellow aliens Dogora and Hedorah, maybe Maguma too), indeed most of the others are comparatively conventional creatures though to be fair most of them had emerged in the genre's first two decades and thus fairly archetypal in nature(and didn't have quite the same pressures that TV Kaiju and Toku productions had in needing to come up with new monster designs every week)

I’m just about finished watching Ultraseven. It was a bit of a slow start but the show really grew into its one identity and style and by the end I really fell in love with it.

My intention was originally to watch the first 3 series, which the original creator was involved in, and then move on. But I think I’ll give Return of Ultraman a chance.

I also watched a random ep of Taro on a whim. The one with the drunk kaiju and the boy in drag starting a band with a bunch of aliens. I may have to try that series eventually as well. Frankly I can see myself going through all the Showa era ultra shows.

I’m also thinking of trying Kamen Rider soon too but that’s a whole other kettle of worms.

Return of Ultraman is very good, it mixes the sophistication of Ultraseven with the anything goes attitude of the original Ultraman. My only complaint with Ultraseven is that every single episode was some aliens who wanted to conquer the earth, and most of them were even the same style of bloviating dickheads. I like it when the various science patrols can fight mummies, aliens, dinosaurs, killer plants, the joy and wonder of children, etc.

One of the interesting things in the Seventies films is they generally shift to monsters with a humanoid outline compared to creatures like King Ghidorah, Ebira, Kumonga, etc. To compensate for being slightly less inventive with shapes they get *really* surreal with the looks of things.

Granted Hedorah's sort of an in-between because of his different forms.

Taro is wild as the premise of the show was to make an Ultra series that felt like a fairy tale. It's geared even more towards kids than others. Leo turned out to be one of my favorite of the Showa era series. It's worth watching all of them.

Did they quietly release 1984/1985 at some point? Seems kind of weird to kickstart with Biollante, but maybe I don't have my release orders correct. I thought Godzilla Returns was the first of the Heisei era

You're right it is, and no, they didn't. The rights for the Heisei era are complicated.

Having said that, most of the Heisei movies are streaming on the channel (minus MechaG II and Space Godzilla).

My only guess is that 1) Criterion wants to release 84 and 85 as a package deal, and Toho is unable/unwilling to figure out the rights limbo that 85 is in (considering how Toho has, at best, a polite disdain for dubs now, I can't imagine they're too eager to get it sorted); or, 2) (and this is probably more likely, for my money) Biollante is seen as a more interesting film by the people who curate Criterion releases, so it jumped to the front of the line, to the extent they plan on doing more releases of the Heisei era films.

Haven't watched Biollante in ages so I was excited to watch the Criterion release. I'm still not a giant fan of the movie overall (mostly because the whole corporate espionage plotline is very silly in practice), but it looks great in 4K and Biollante is one of my favorite designs overall.
