No, I liked every aspect of the movie and I'm not ashamed, not only that, but it's objectively good and anyone who disagrees simply isn't brave enough to stand up for themselves.

That is great to hear! It's good to enjoy something whole-heartedly and unashamedly. I would disagree with you over it being an objectively good film, but enjoyment in of itself is quite subjective. I might not be the biggest fan of it, but I do not want to diminish your love for the movie or imply that it is erroneous to enjoy it.

Even if you think the new movie wasn't Good Cinema it has popularized an excellent characterization of King Ghidorah so it's ultimately a positive thing for the series

I love the hunky wolf dad, he hates godzilla at first but slowly comes to respect him and understand his purpose. Unlike Charles Dance who only sees King Ghidorah as a tool to get his revenge against the human race.

please explain why the movie is not mediocre at best, because outside of the parts involving monsters the human stuff was mostly awful.

Ok, so what are the monsters actually, like, doing? Their actions and motives are really unclear.

I was being flip, SMG. I didn't mind it much but I grew up watching Hong Kong action movies. Those hinge on broad emotional beats and a big theme and little else.

I never misunderstood the Big Bad's Plan, I never minded the dad's outbursts, I wasn't bothered by the humor. I'm easy about this stuff, both because of who I am but also because I've watched enough Godzilla movies to form a callus over the part of my brain that gives a poo poo about human stuff in kaiju movies (for reference, I also liked Brody's character in G'14 and enjoyed all the human poo poo in Pacific Rim). I can see how people would be bothered by it, and I respect that position.

I originally got back into this thread because KOTM's Godzilla was being described as malevolent. There's not a lot of text that supports that IMO.

See I feel like I'm in this weird gray area where I loved the monster stuff but I hated a good chunk of the human stuff but not enoguh to HATE it, and I felt the monster stuff out weighed the human stuff

But not to a degree that I'd fight people over it.

To me, this was a Godzilla movie. Not one of the best, but not one of the worst, and getting to see it in a theater was a fantastic experience even if I honestly, legit think that the movie would be made better if the dad was removed 100% and the mom was made the lead and given his beef with Godzilla.

Mothra coming down and kicking Ghidorah's rear end as the chanting goes GOJIRA MOSURA FOREVER is the best moment I've had in a theater in years, lame flimsy rear end human scenes be damned

I have serious reservations with the nuke thing, even if I can justify it in my head, and I personally do not like what they did with Rodan's character even if I acknowledge that what they DID was fun. It's one of those things where I like it despite itself. I guess because of those two specific draw backs, I can't say this is one of my favorite Godzilla films ever forever

Kid me would have loved the film though. Also would have fast forwarded through all the human bits on a lovely VHS before school started to see the kaiju action like he did with DAM

Yeah, pretty much. I think if you love kaiju spectacle you can appreciate the parts that the film got right. Rodan's Bongo Drums Of Doom bop-bopping while he leveled a city simply by flying over it is extremely good poo poo.

Yeah, this is mostly my stance on it, when I'm being serious and not shitposting. I loved the action and the character writing for the monsters, despite not a single word spoken from any of them, they had literal tons more charisma and interesting character arcs than any of the humans in the movie. the climax for ken watanabe's character was stymied by a metaphorical dramatic banana peel with the fortune cookie joke, you had the scientist dude spouting terrible oneliners constantly, the central family's parents were either obnoxious or horrible people, and this movie had one of the worst Killer Frost From Day After Tomorrow scenes with Ghidorah and the kid running through Fenway just ~barely~ dodging the hundred-meter-tall monster's army-annihilating attacks constantly.

oh also the giant foam boulder that hit them and bounced off super obviously and somehow didn't get cut out of the movie lol

Rodan would never work as anyone's under bitch unless he was mind controlled.

Showa Rodan and Heisei Rodan, the only two we can accurately judge the characters of, were fiercely on their own side- he wasn't Godzilla's side kick and wasn't treated as such. He fought Ghidorah on equal footing with Godzilla, and Godzilla didn't convince him to go fight Ghidorah with him.

Mothra shamed them both into doing it by calling them bitches and proving she had bigger balls than them both.

And Heisei Rodan only cared about Junior and swung at every single motherfucker he could in the film. Him sacrificing himself to revive Godzilla was less to help Godzilla, more to say gently caress You to the humans and protect Junior.

Rodan is no one's side bitch and it's unfortunate that's his new character because I'm afraid it's going to stick. But that's not to say that it's BAD- the way they did it is fun, even if I personally dislike that they did it with him.

A big point of comparison between Rodan and Angirus- Rodan was never Godzilla's friend. The two fought each other and fought beside each other but only because they had to. Ang was straight up Godzilla's loyal friend and first true ally. The second Ang at least. The first Ang fought Godzilla to the death but that's neither here nor there. Rodan is closer to a rival than anything.
