It makes me think of that amazing stitching website that for years accidentally had the font getting larger and larger as you scrolled until it got to the point where you only saw part of a letter filling the whole screen.

I wish I remembered the URL to look it up on the wayback machine since they fixed it years after it had originally been published.

My buddy and I have been watching kaiju movies over video chat and warming up beforehand with some short-form content with random Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, and Ultraman episodes. Anyone have any recommendations for some particularly nutso kaiju or kaiju-adjacent content that would be great appetite-whetters? Doesn't have to be straight narrative or TV if you've got any outside the box ideas.

If you ever watched the old Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad TV show you could always go back and watch the original tokusatsu series it was based on, Gridman the Hyper Agent.

There was an anime reboot a few years back that looks pretty good as well:

There's a bunch of other anime series that are also in the kaiju genre, or at least kaiju-adjacent

If anyone has been enjoying that Godzilla puppet show on YouTube, Bandai has started making soft vinyls of Godzilla and Sons. If they are popular hopefully they will continue making more in the series!

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
Randomly came across this preorder of the SH Figuarts figure for Shin Ultraman and it offers a slightly better look at the suit than the teaser trailer. Looks pretty faithful to the original show to my eye, albeit with a few changes to the distribution of the red pattern. I don’t see a color timer either.

No eye holes and no zipper-hiding back frill either.

Holy poo poo - just finished the Heisei Gamera trilogy. It's a great set of movies that I'd even recommend to non Kaiju fans. The Arrow Blu-rays are also chockfull of other special features, so I can't wait to check those out.

I'd have to say that Legion is the best, followed by the first one, and that Iris is a bit weaker than the other two, despite its really great opening scenes.

Are the other Gamera films comparable?

Gamera the Brave is a great kids movie and is comparable in some fashion

Holy poo poo no not the others. Imagine every terrible cliche applied to kaiju films- those come from Gamera. Showa Gamera is GREAT but it's also SO worse

I always appreciate how much the Showa Gamera monsters look like kids’ refrigerator drawings come to life. Their mouths are just lunch-bag puppets, it’s amazing.

I think Gamera vs. Barugon is decent. The rest are pretty poor, but hit a certain level of lunacy if that's what one wants. The nadir is Gamera Super Monster, a film of such astonishing cheapness it has to be seen to be believed.

On rewatches I always get annoyed with how long Iris spends loving around with the smaller bugs, I didn't come here to pay any attention to what is going on in a train tunnel, I want to see giant monsters fight. The part where the bugs swarm Gamera is cool though.

That's actually pretty fukkin cool.

I was sorely disappointed at both Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman's posters. I long for the wild days of Showa era posters with wild collages and big screaming text. The blank slate look of the modern ones are uninspiring.

An invisible kaiju sounds like an idea that would be a cut away joke to a lovely low budget movie on another TV show. Just poorly dubbed Japanese people pointing at nothing as cardboard buildings collapse on themselves.

Excuse me, Skull Island established that Kong grew up with a fun lake to splash around in (and eat murdersquids), so he obviously got acclimated to water from that.
